Surprise! I decided I needed to write a little prequel fic for my main fic A Wolf, A Tiger, and their Songbird. This is purely focused on RuMira, I enjoyed writing this one out. Hope you enjoy!

Anytime I see someone commenting on A Wolf, A Tiger and their Songbird approaching chapter 12, I salute the brave soul. Rapidly approaching danger and they don’t even know. (Well kinda, I don’t think it was that big of a surprise tbh)

Gets a laugh out of me every time.

Ugh, PRINCE! It's 5 in the morning and you got me out here feeling too many feelings! My poor baby Rumi. ;-;

"I didn't get them."

The statement hit Rumi like a freight train, despite being spoken softly. Some small, desperate part of her almost hoped she hadn't heard Zoey right, humming a soft, "Hm?" As if that would change what she just heard.

And yet, Zoey pressed, not speaking any louder, but her voice was firmer, more present in the earth shattering silence they had been sitting in before. "Your calls. I-I didn't get them. Rich, um. He had my phone all morning." The words settled in Rumi's chest hard and heavy, her heart aching somewhere beneath the weight of them.

What more could she say that she hadn't already said? When she poured out her heart, when she finally spoke the words she had wanted to say for so long not out of levity, but out of a sheer need for Zoey to understand.

"...Okay," was all she could utter, all that she could manage to whisper.

She could feel Zoey's eyes turn to her, feel the plea that was coming long before it formed between them. "You believe me, don't you?" Zoey asked her, and Rumi was helpless but to turn and look at her girlfriend.

"...Always."

Because she did. She did believe her. And wasn't that so much worse?

Because she still knew Zoey. She still knew that despite her words, despite her plea, despite her confession... Rumi hadn't heard the last of the man who made her lover smell like smoke.

And yet. Any yet. She stayed. Because what else could Rumi do with her heart but leave it in Zoey's hands anyways?

Isn't that terrible?

Back from vacation! Still gotta get situated in the new house, so won't be updating A Wolf, A Tiger, and their Songbird for a little longer, but I did end up writing a little bit while I was gone! Not much, admittedly, I'm not even halfway through the next chapter. Maybe I'll have it done this weekend or next week? Can't say for sure just yet.

But for fun, here's a sneak preview of one of my favorite bits. :)

“There’s a reason we were distracted, Yeeun,” Mira started.

A snort of a laugh left Yeeun, an angry sharpness returning to her voice, “Well let’s hear it, I’m already kicking your asses, can’t make it worse.”

Mira glanced at Rumi, who took a deep breath and spoke for them, “We needed to discuss everything while Zoey was in pre-heat, and mating bites got brought up. Zoey’s a part of our pack now.”

There was a prolonged silence that followed Rumi’s statement, and Zoey looked at both her packmates as she started getting nervous too. A long, drawn-out sigh left Yeeun, something thumping lightly against the wall before Zoey could hear soft, padded footsteps. Considering the sound of the cello was getting louder, Yeeun was moving, and Mira looked like she was trying to figure out how to hide behind the couch. A door opened, the cello playing loudly for a few extra seconds before Yeeun called, “Celine! We have a new daughter.”

The cello abruptly stopped, and Zoey didn’t have time to process the statement at all. “…I beg your pardon?”

Welcome to intermission,

I hope it's worth the wait, apologies for the delay. I've been having some job interviews and they've taken over my mind until today when I got so much fic editing done.

I will continue updating the oneshots collection as I edit and proofread the best I can as a sleep deprived writer.
