She made art from the parts of her that were broken. She finds beauty in chaos.
— Jennae Cecelia
Here’s the poem I wrote about my Mommom after her passing last month. This was a hard one-
I could write about how you’re gone, but I’d rather write about when you were here.
I tried to write but it’s hard to be poetic when you’re heart broken.
So, here are just a few things I think of when i think of Mommom.
Sleepovers at your house and Saturday afternoons when we ate so many tasty cakes I almost threw up.
Playing trivia pursuit when you’d always let me win.
Going to the the movie theater to watch the Disney movies no one else wanted to see,
and pool parties, so many pool parties.
Singing you are my sunshine to me even when the skies looked so gray.
Hemming my pants because I was so darn short.
Making me handmade Halloween costumes that were always better than the stuff they sold at party city.
Karaoke at Slip Mahoney’s.
Watching rugrats and playing barbies together.
The best vacations in ocean city-
That sun on your face, salt in the air feeling.
Learning to swim for the first time.
And you repeating to us over and over “never go out in the ocean past your belly”
and you and my mom teaching me to blow bubbles under the water.
A teeny tiny mailbox in your Christmas tree that always had a clue to the biggest and best presents- a trip to Disney world, a wooden dollhouse made just for me, a hot pink Powerwheel Barbie Jeep.
Playing in the children’s garden at longwood.
The amazing realization that you can do Christmas twice in one year- with Christmas in July!
Extravagant elaborate birthday parties with the best themes- so many Beauty and the Beast parties because that’s all I ever wanted.
How you always told me I was beautiful, resilient, and a good singer even when I didn’t want to believe it.
Magnolia trees, opals, Boston cream donuts, and butterflies.
These are the things I think of when I think of you.
A Saturday in December
Remnants of snow on the ground melt slowly from 3 days ago.
Poetry floats in my mind like the marshmallows in my coco.
We have matching pajamas but sleep in nothing at all.
The window is cracked
I fall asleep with a open book on my bare breasts
And your arm around my waist.
As I fade, I forget what the book was even about
And I know I’ve been hurt
But I can’t remember their names
I can’t remember why they were so important in a distant life
And you and I
we’re far from perfect
You waited too long to call me on my birthday
I felt insecure when you hid your phone from me
I can be a bit of a bitch.
I made an insensitive comment about your parents’ divorce.
And after all this time, you still can’t read my mind.
But in this moment
All there is
is you
Our flannel pajamas on the floor
The cool breeze from the window
your hot breath on my neck
You ease the chaos and insecurities
You care about things because I care about them
There is stillness and
There is quiet
There is safety
And there is warmth
Here
With you
‘infinite abyss’
i loves stars

How to Love a Witch
Here she is
Wrapped in fairytales and promises.
She needs a little love to make her exist
In this dimension.
In a world where the length of your relationships proves your worth,
She was penniless.
The villain in her own story
The witch that ate men whole
The woman without a soul
Bottomless pit
Empty soul or luckless
Mosquito eater or Temptress
Beautiful or hideous
Burn her before she can burn you
Talk about her when she’s not around
But never invite her to the party
Blame her when you’re unlucky
Tell everyone the witch has cursed you
Spit lies like they’re the truth
Tell them she was Bad at love
Let the rumors be a drug
Spread them like confetti
And eat them all up
How do you love the unlovable
How do you love the witch
who was never a witch at all.
