if you shut your eyes and are A LUCKY ONE, you may see at times a shapeless pool of lovely pale colours suspended in the darkness; then if you squeeze your eyes tighter, the pool begins to take SHAPE, and the colours become so vivid that with another   squeeze they must go on FIRE.

The other girl was being ridiculous. Alyss laughed at all the examples being thrown out there, it was better than rolling her eyes at least. “Technically, you would be correct, but the point is, it doesn’t matter what you classify it as, as long as you don’t get caught, it won’t matter.”

“You could ask… or you could look right behind me,” Tristan points out, wanting to roll his eyes at how unaware this girl is. You’d think the fact that he was rummaging through it earlier would be a dead giveaway. “I’ve gotten a few admirers,” he shares proudly. Mostly freshmen. Some sophomores that don’t know any better. “I’d sign you no problem,” he quips, smirking. “Anything for a fan.” Again, he winks.

Alyssia felt her cheeks heat up at the stupidity of her question. Typically she wasn’t that clueless, but apparently her brain decided to malfunction just when it would make her look worst. “Well, I guess you can see why I’m getting you to write my paper.” She shook her head at the arrogance on the boy, but then again, any eighteen year old who had fans was no doubt going to end up this way. “Dude, as much as you may want to believe I’m one of those girls, I barely even know your name.”

“I mean, you can either spend that money on a new lock or new clothes every time you get changed -- I know which I’d rather do.” She shot him a pointed look. “I mean, if you want to parade around the hallways half naked, be my guest. I’m sure some people would appreciate the view.”

“There’s not a lot you can’t get away with if you believe in yourself. You’d be surprised. I think maybe because there’s less options in the area? Either that or the rich parents pay off the school. Actually, it’s probably that. – I was just asking! If you’re going to commit you need to be able to throw in a ‘my mom’s in the hospital’ every once in a while.”

Alyss nodded to that, “fake it till you make it really works. If you look like you’re meant to be there or doing what you’re doing, people aren’t going to question you. People are notorious for avoiding confrontation. Hey, I’m not going to knock rich parents, their kids have the best mansions to throw parties in.” She nodded, “you’re right, maybe I should throw in a dead grandparents just for a good measure.”

“it wasn’t out of the blue.” She rolled her eyes, “you could’ve easily seen me walking down the hallways towards you. It’s not my fault you didn’t look up from your locker. What I was saying,” she folded her arms, “is that in return for me not scaring you to death, do you wanna write my paper for me?”

Jackie never really cared who was listening, or if they actually were. As long as she got out things in almost a venting sort of manner, and they agreed she was right. That’s all she needed. “If you’re being sarcastic, I’m choosing to ignore it because I completely agree. I didn’t even mean to key their car. They’re just too fucking sensitive, you know?”

“You really should have just gotten out of there before they realised you did it.” Alyss shrugged -- that’s what she would have done. Who has the time to deal with ridiculous and annoyed people?

hearing a voice that DEFINITELY did not belong to her father, nat finally regained some consciousness as she opened her eyes, and made a face. “yeah, i know..” she lied, rubbing her eyelids a little as she slowly moved her head up from the desk. “i can’t.” she then confessed, sighing. “ —i can’t allow myself to get lower gpa, so i have to attend. even if i do fall asleep.” 

“Mm, yeah I’m sure,” she glanced at the girl out of the corner of her eye. “You being oblivious to the empty classroom is indicatory of that.” Alyss tugged at her backpack, of which the strap was trapped under the leg of Nat’s chair, pointedly. “I’m pretty sure teachers will think worse of you for falling asleep in their class than being at home.”

“You know where my locker is, you find me,” he counters. He is the talent after all. He doesn’t need to waste his time sifting through the locker. “If you can’t slip it through the slot, I’m on the field. Number #19. I sign things if you bring ‘em.”

She restrained from rolling her eyes. “How on earth would I know which locker is yours? I guess I could just ask one of your many fans, right?” Then she rolled her eyes. “Do people actually do that?” she laughed. “And what if I forget to bring you something to sign, will you autograph me instead?”

“Are they? The only thing my cat ever shreds is my skin when he wants attention. She’s also eaten paper. They put everything in their mouths. I don’t think they can hear me over all the homework they’re drowning in. Cool people just fail their classes instead.” He joked.

“Maybe you’re just not giving him enough attention.” Alyssia screwed up her face and laughed. “Dogs are dumb. --Yeah, who even needs a high school diploma nowadays.”

Alyss narrowed her eyes. “Given that you aren’t instilling much confidence in me that you aren’t going to fail this paper, I don’t think upfront payment is really something I can do.”

She wasn’t exactly a fan of doing extra work as payment, the whole point of it was to get out of more labour, but it wasn’t the worst trade she’d make in her life. “I can do physics or maths.”

“Give me a paper of yours that you actually did write, and I’ll do the rest,” Tristan assures simply. He’s no novice at pretending he’s of lesser intelligence to successfully pass off work. He’s done a paper or two for some of the jocks to keep them on the team. You can’t succeed if you’re not flexible after all. A mind as conniving as his is no stranger to putting himself into a role and acting accordingly.

Alyssia’s fingers drummed audibly against the lockers. “That is going to be a hard one,” she groaned. She couldn’t remember the last time she had actually put effort into doing an assignment for a class she didn’t like, and any language class was her most hated. “Want to come to my locker while I go search for one?”

Anika simply nodded her head in agreement, feeling a little guilty at the mention of how much she was charging. It wasn’t like her to be hard on people nor greedy but she’d taken advantage of the opportunity that had presented itself and now there was no turning back, she was committed. “Right,” she agreed, “Not on my top ten fun things to do in Northlake listicle either,” she assured her, just in case there was any mistaking Nik’s willingness to do the essay for enthusiasm or excitement about doing it. “Always concerned- actually, I don’t think I have a reputation…but I still don’t want a bad one,” she explained, wincing a little at the thought of her suddenly developing a terrible legacy in Northlake. She tucked her hands into her pockets and sighed, there was no easy way to explain herself, if there was even a way to explain herself at all, “It’s complicated and weird and if I tell you, I’m worried it’s going to come back to bite me. That’s the honest answer,”

“Anything for the money, right?” she raised her eyebrows. There wasn’t any judgement in her tone. Alyss waved her hand dismissively, “you know what they say, bad publicity is still publicity. I hardly think you’d have the worst reputation at this school regardless.” She never quite got people’s obsession with what everyone thought about them. As far as she was aware, if you had a certain level of self-assurance, anyone admired you. “I don’t gossip. Unless I’m directly involved, you’re hardly going to hear a story from me. --Except apparently when it’s being done as a favour.”
