UPDATED! The New Wave Tarot (V2) by Amanda Lee Stilwell

I spent nearly a year working on the first version of the New Wave Tarot Deck. I originally made the major arcana of the deck as a gift for my partner for his birthday. Our friends loved it so much, they asked me to expand the project to the entire deck. I really spent a lot of time constructing the deck - matching the traditional Rider-Waite and Thoth interpretations of the cards with musicians that Stacey and I love from the 1980s. 

The most controversial card in the New Wave Tarot Deck is "The Hanged Man" because I used an image of Ian Curtis. Now many people seem to assume that I used his image because he committed suicide by hanging, but in fact, this was not at all my motivation. The Hanged Man card represents being a bit stuck or not having control (“she’s lost control again”). It’s also (reversed) a symbol of great personal sacrifice. I very carefully chose all the artists and images (including specific body language) for every card. I have always seen ian curtis as someone who felt very much like his life and health wasn’t in his control. While this card may seem morbid at the outset, I hope you can understand my reasons for choosing him and realize that it is a card that should probably evoke a strong sense of feeling loss. 

We remade the deck in 2016 so it is a little easier to handle. We also updated a few of the cards: The Fool (now Frank Tovey of Fad Gadget), Justice (just new imagery but still Steve Strange), Wheel of Fortune (now Devo), Two of Wands (now Stuart Adamson of Big Country).
