A flower for good luck {Drabble}
In his stay in Zaphias' castle and accompanying the young princess, it was a rare sight for Yen'fay to be seen inside Estellise's bedroom. Even being the stoic, calm-minded person that he was, the former dynast knew how awkward it would probably be for him to be inside a lady's personal bedroom - especially when that room belonged to one of the highest authorities in the entire Empire... Rather, the closest he was used to being near the princess' room was when Yen'fay leaned against the wall near the door, typically waiting for her to find a suitable change of clothes for a stroll through the castle's grounds or the rest of the city. There was another reason that he never had the courage to tell Estellise about, and those were the occasional times when the silver-haired man felt that the young woman was in danger. While the princess slept soundly in her room, Yen'fay had those restless nights in which he would sit right in front of her door like a dutiful guard, not having much faith in the castle guards that already littered the castle at all times. If anything, doing the job himself gave Yen'fay a sense of relief, and he would stay in front of the princess' door until his worried thoughts had vanished.
This time, it was a little bit different. During one of their walks, Princess Estellise made a note of Yen'fay's silver hair that was always tied up in a traditional ponytail except for when he slept or bathed. It was true that his hair did bear an unusual color, considering that he wasn't anywhere near the age to have a full head of gray, white, or silver hair. With a starry look in her eyes, she praised how well-kept it was and how the sun made it gleam remarkably. The stoic man was embarrassed to hear such kind and flattering words from the young woman, and he tried to assure her that it was nothing special at all. However, the amazed look in Estellise's eyes didn't change, and with a little bit of courage, she was even so forward as to ask her wannabe bodyguard to undo his ponytail. At first taken aback by such a question, the pink-haired princess promised that she would put his hair back up afterwards herself. One could swear they saw a bead of sweat fall from Yen'fay's brow as he deliberated the idea in his mind, but he knew that saying "no" to such an enthusiastic Estellise was next to impossible. He gave an awkward nod that was followed by a sigh, and Yen'fay soon found himself sitting in front of an ornate vanity mirror and table in Estellise's bedroom.
With his ponytail undone, Estellise was amazed to see the smooth, silver hair fall just a little past the former dynast's back, and she was reminded of her close friend and his own long, black hair. Yen'fay gave a nervous chuckle but was pleased to know that she was so fascinated by it, and a small smile was seen on the corner of his lips. With a very pink and flower-themed comb, Estellise ran it through Yen'fay's hair. The former dynast knew that if anyone else was doing this to him or watching, he would probably be able to physically feel his sense of pride and dignity fall. Nonetheless, the feeling of the comb running through his hair felt nice, and with his head a bit down and eyes closed, Yen'fay listened to the soft and subtle tune that Estellise began to hum. Several minutes passed as the man remained silent and responded to the girl's requests to turn or tilt his head. Time felt almost non-existent in Estellise's bedroom, and Yen'fay was surprised at the air of calm that surrounded him in such an opulent space.
Once she was done with combing, the pink-haired princess found the jet black tie that Yen'fay used. Her humming had ceased as she delicately held the tie in one hand and Yen'fay's hair in the other, praying that she wouldn't make a mistake. The man had a silent feeling of belief in the girl. To calm her shaking hands and urge her on, Yen'fay hummed his own tune - a simplified version of a traditional folk song from Chon'sin. It appeared to be working, since Estellise's hands had stopped shaking, and she was able to deftly tie her friend's hair back to what it was (after a few trials and errors...). She nervously asked the man to open his eyes and asked if she did a good job. With a nod and a pleased look that shown on the mirror in front of him, Yen'fay responded to her question.
"Aye, you did a fine job, Estellise. Truth be told, I have not had another do my own hair for me in a very long time. It was... relaxing. ...Hm? ... Aye, I suppose I can do that."
Estellise, as relieved as she was to know that she did a fine job, quickly asked Yen'fay to close his eyes again for just a moment. The man complied and wondered just what exactly she planned to do to him next. He heard a small rustle and soon felt something placed on the right side of his head near his ear. With an excited grin, the princess told her friend to open his eyes once again. The former dynast looked at his reflection to see that Estellise had put one the small, delicate flowers from Halure's tree in his hair. Yen'fay admittely felt that it was a bit femininzing, and with a stern but curious tone asked the girl why she did that. His frown then transformed into a smile when he heard Estellise's reason, and a small blush appeared on his cheeks. With a chuckle, Yen'fay gently tapped the flower with the tip of his finger and turned to give the princess a playful tap on her nose.
"Good luck, eh...? That is never a bad reason for such a gesture, Estellise. Aye, I thank you for your kindness, and I shall do my best to protect this little trinket... as I have promised to protect you."
