The apartment felt colder now — quieter, too. Days had passed since Soonie’s disappearance and return, but the silence between you and Minho had only grown louder. Conversations were brief and stilted, no longer filled with warmth but with something sharp and fragile. The air between you felt like glass one wrong word, one wrong look, and everything would shatter.
Minho still cared for the cats the way he always had, but now there was something different in the way he hovered over them a wariness that hadn’t been there before. Each time you reached out to help — offering to feed them or play with them — Minho would tense, his voice clipped as he said, “I’ve got it.”
You knew what that really meant: I don’t trust you.
Tonight was no different. You stood quietly in the doorway of the living room, watching Minho kneel on the floor, flicking a wand toy for Dori and Doongie. Soonie was curled on Minho’s lap, chin resting on his knee as if he belonged nowhere else.
“Minho?” you said quietly.
He didn’t look up.
“I made dinner,” you tried again, your voice smaller this time.
“I’m not hungry,” he said, still focused on the cats.
Your chest tightened. He wasn’t being cruel no raised voice, no harsh words but the coldness in his silence hurt more than shouting ever could.
“I was thinking…” you began, stepping further inside, “maybe we could go out this weekend? Just us?”
Minho’s hand stilled. The toy sagged limply in his grip, and Doongie lost interest, trotting away.
“I don’t know,” he muttered.
“Please,” you said, voice breaking. “I know I messed up, but I want to fix this — I need to fix this. I miss you.”
Minho finally turned to look at you, and the exhaustion in his face hit you harder than you expected. His eyes — once so warm — looked guarded, like he was holding back something too painful to say aloud.
“You don’t have to fix it all in one night,” he said at last. “But… we can try.”
The café was quiet, tucked away from the city’s noise. You sat across from Minho, but the space between you felt vast — a chasm filled with unsaid words and unspoken fears.
Minho barely touched his drink, his fingers tracing the rim of his cup. You tried to start conversations — asking about his week, about the guys — but his answers were short, mechanical.
“I’ve been trying,” you blurted out finally, your voice trembling. “I’ve been double-checking the balcony door every day, keeping an eye on all three of them whenever you’re not home. I’m trying to be better.”
Minho’s gaze flicked up, sharp and unreadable. “That’s what you’re supposed to do,” he said quietly. “I shouldn’t have to remind you to keep them safe.”
The words stung, but you didn’t argue. You couldn’t.
“I know,” you whispered. “I know I failed you.”
Minho sighed, dragging a hand down his face. “It’s not just that,” he said, his voice heavy. “You don’t understand what it felt like — finding Soonie out there alone, cold, scared… You weren’t there. You didn’t see him shivering in that alley, curled up in a corner like he thought no one was coming for him.”
“I would’ve done anything to find him,” you said fiercely. “I walked for hours — I knocked on doors, called shelters — I didn’t stop, Minho.”
“But I’m the one who found him,” Minho shot back, bitterness cutting through his voice. “I had to be the one to fix what you broke.”
The words landed like a slap.
“I know,” you choked out. “And I hate myself for it.”
Minho’s expression faltered — just for a moment — but he quickly masked it.
“I just…” His voice softened, but the weight of it still lingered. “I can’t forget how scared I was. And I can’t forget that it was you who let it happen.”
You swallowed the sob building in your throat. “I don’t know how to make you trust me again,” you said quietly. “But I’ll keep trying. No matter how long it takes.”
Minho didn’t answer right away. He just stared down at his untouched coffee, fingers curling tightly around the cup.
“We’ll see,” he said finally.
The following days felt like walking a tightrope. Minho was still distant, still guarded — but cracks had started to form in his walls. Some mornings, he’d linger just a little longer before leaving for practice. Some nights, you’d catch him glancing at you like he wanted to say something but couldn’t find the words.
You didn’t push. You just kept trying.
One evening, as you sat curled up on the couch with a book, Soonie jumped into your lap — hesitant at first, but eventually settling in with a soft sigh. His purring filled the quiet room, warm and steady.
Minho, who had been watching from the kitchen, stepped closer. “Looks like he forgives you,” he muttered.
You glanced up at him. “Does that mean you do too?”
Minho didn’t answer right away. Instead, he sat on the arm of the couch, close but not quite touching you. His gaze stayed fixed on Soonie, his fingers absently curling into the fur on the cat’s back.
“I’m trying,” he said quietly. “But it’s hard.”
Your heart twisted painfully. “I get it,” you whispered. “I’d feel the same.”
The room fell quiet again, save for Soonie’s rhythmic purring. After a moment, Minho exhaled — sharp and shaky — and scrubbed a hand down his face.
“I hate this,” he muttered. “I hate feeling like this with you.”
“I do too,” you whispered.
Minho shifted then, finally meeting your eyes. His gaze wasn’t cold this time — it was raw and tired, but open in a way it hadn’t been for weeks. Slowly, hesitantly, he reached out — his hand resting lightly on your knee.
“I don’t know if things can just go back to normal,” he admitted. “But I still love you.”
The tears you’d been holding back finally spilled over. “I love you too,” you whispered. “I never stopped.”
Minho’s fingers tightened on your knee, and this time, when he spoke, his voice cracked.
“I can’t lose you,” he said softly.
“You won’t,” you promised, voice breaking. “I swear.”
For the first time in what felt like forever, Minho leaned into you his head resting against your shoulder, his arm curling tightly around you like he was afraid you’d disappear if he let go.
You sat like that for a long time, wrapped in the quiet comfort of each other’s presence. Soonie shifted in your lap, stretching one tiny paw over Minho’s hand as if to hold him there too.
It wasn’t perfect as the ache still lingered, and trust wasn’t something that could be rebuilt in a day. But in that quiet moment, you knew one thing for certain…
Minho hadn’t given up on you. And you wouldn’t stop fighting for him.

The door slammed shut behind Minho as he entered the apartment, his expression blank but his eyes dark and unreadable. You stood near the couch, your hands clasped tightly together, heart thundering in your chest. You’d heard the anger in his voice over the phone, but seeing him in person his lips pressed into a thin line, his jaw ticking was worse.
"What happened?" he asked, his voice low but brimming with tension.
Your throat felt dry. "Minho, I—"
"Where is Soonie?" he interrupted, his sharp eyes locking onto yours.
You flinched. "I don’t know," you admitted, your voice barely above a whisper.
His face twisted, and he let out a disbelieving laugh cold and humorless. "You don’t know?" he repeated, the words slicing through the air. "Are you joking right now, Y/N?"
"I didn’t mean for this to happen!" you exclaimed, tears springing to your eyes. "I thought he was asleep, and then—then I realized the balcony door was open, and—"
"The balcony?" Minho’s voice was louder now, laced with fury. He took a step closer, his eyes blazing. "You left the balcony door open while Soonie was here? Do you have any idea how dangerous that is? How irresponsible?"
"I was careful!" you insisted, though the words felt hollow even to you. "It was just a mistake, Minho! I didn’t think—"
"Exactly," he snapped, cutting you off. "You didn’t think. You didn’t think about how much I trust you. You didn’t think about how much Soonie means to me. You didn’t think about anything, did you?"
The accusation stung, and you bristled defensively. "I’ve been searching for him all day! I didn’t just sit here and hope he’d walk back in!"
"And yet, he’s still missing," Minho shot back, his voice sharp as glass. "Do you even understand what you’ve done? Those cats are my everything, Y/N. They’ve been with me through everything, my worst days, my best days. They’re not just pets; they’re family. And you—" He stopped himself, his fists clenching as if he was trying to keep from saying something he’d regret.
You swallowed hard, the weight of his words crushing you. "I know how much they mean to you," you said quietly, your voice trembling. "And I’m sorry, Minho. I am. I didn’t want this to happen. I’ve been tearing myself apart trying to fix it."
His laugh this time was bitter, his frustration spilling over. "Sorry doesn’t bring Soonie back, does it?"
You felt the tears spill over, but you quickly wiped them away. "I’m not giving up, Minho. I’m not. I’ll search all night if I have to. I’ll knock on every door, call every shelter… whatever it takes."
Minho turned away, his hands on his hips as he exhaled sharply. For a moment, he didn’t say anything, and the silence was deafening. Then, finally, he spoke, his voice quieter but no less cutting.
"You don’t get it," he said, shaking his head. "You don’t know what it’s like to lose something you love because someone else was careless."
The words hit you like a punch to the gut. You opened your mouth to respond, but he was already grabbing his coat.
"I’m going to look for him," he said curtly, not even glancing at you.
"Minho, wait—"
"Don’t," he snapped, his voice like a whip. "I need to do this myself."
He left before you could say another word, the door slamming shut behind him.
Hours passed. You’d spent every second of them searching the streets, calling Soonie’s name until your voice was hoarse. Every shadow, every flicker of movement sent your heart racing, but each time, it wasn’t him.
You were about to give up when your phone buzzed. You fumbled to answer it, Minho’s name on the screen.
"I found him," he said, his voice strained. "In the alley behind the convenience store."
Relief flooded through you, so overwhelming that your knees nearly gave out. "Oh, thank God. Is he okay?"
"He’s fine," Minho replied, though his tone was clipped. "Scared, but fine."
"I’m coming to you," you said quickly.
"No," he said firmly. "Just… go home. I’ll be back soon."
Before you could argue, he hung up.
When Minho returned, Soonie was curled in his arms, looking none the worse for wear. You approached cautiously, but Minho avoided your gaze as he set the cat down gently on the couch.
"I’m glad he’s safe," you said softly.
Minho finally looked at you, his expression still hard. "I don’t know if I can trust you again," he said bluntly.
His words hit you like a physical blow, and you felt your throat tighten. "Minho, I—"
"I love you, Y/N," he interrupted, his voice quieter now but no less serious. "But this… this is different. They’re my family. If something had happened to Soonie because of you—" He shook his head, unable to finish the thought.
You nodded, tears slipping silently down your cheeks. "I understand," you whispered. "I’ll spend the rest of my life making it up to you, Minho. To him."
He looked at you for a long moment, the anger in his eyes giving way to something softer—something still wounded but less sharp.
"I just need time," he said finally.
And though it wasn’t forgiveness, it was a start.
Later that night, as Soonie purred softly in his lap, Minho glanced over at you, your eyes red from crying but still focused on the cats, as if you were silently promising to protect them with everything you had.
It wasn’t much, but it was enough to begin stitching the frayed edges back together.

You slip into the dimly lit war room, heart already racing before the mission even begins. Across the holographic table, Han Jisung is leaning casually against a rack of maps and screens. His sharp gaze flicks to you, followed by a teasing smirk. “Finally decided to show up, partner?” he teases quietly. You barely have time to retort before the briefing begins.

The mission: infiltrate ApexTech’s underground compound and retrieve the Cipher Ex file before sunrise.
ੈ✩‧₊˚༺☆༻ੈ✩‧₊˚
You watch him check your gear with a practiced eye a quick scan of the silenced pistol at your hip, a smug nod at the concealed blade on your thigh. His warm breath brushes your ear as he whispers, “You’d better keep up tonight, Agent.”
Flirting fills the silence that tension can’t. You flash back a grin. “If I didn’t think you needed the competition,” you reply, voice low, “I might let you stand in the shadows tonight.” He laughs softly, a rich sound in the quiet room. It’s only us here spies who have learned to trust each other with their lives. That trust hums between you like electricity.

Time skip: into the lions den 🖤
ੈ✩‧₊˚༺☆༻ੈ✩‧₊˚
Moonlight glints off your black tactical suit as you and Jisung move through the silent alley behind ApexTech. The building looms ahead, all concrete and security cameras, like a fortress daring you to come closer. Jisung links arms with you as you approach the side entrance. “Shall we?” he murmurs. Your pulse spikes in your throat, both from adrenaline and the thrill of working side by side.
Inside, the hallways are cold and sterile, lit by fluorescent strips that buzz softly. You deactivate the security panel with a rasp of code and Jisung catches the door before it closes, his palm brushing yours. A quick, knowing look passes between you. It’s still all business… right?
Together you slip into a storage room lined with file cabinets and stacked boxes. Jisung whispers, “We need to access the server room. Two guards, heavy firepower. I can draw them away; you slip through on the left.” You nod and smile. “Careful, only one pretty face per fight,” you say under your breath. He laughs quietly, smirking. “Tell me that when you see me lying on the floor,” he quips. In the darkness of that storage room, as he disappears into the corridor, the echo of his chuckle follows you out.
Exchanging coded messages through the comm-link is second nature at this point. From down the hallway, Jisung’s voice crackles, “Alpha-7 to Bravo-2. Two o’clock sniper. You covered?” His tone is light, but you catch the edge of concern. “On it,” you reply, voice steady. In one swift motion, you assemble your suppressed rifle. A faint clang sounds as your bullet finds a camera lens, shattering glass in the distance. Jisung’s voice comes back with a hint of relief: “Nice shot.”
You reach the heart of the compound: a hidden archive room humming with servers and blinking consoles. Jisung joins you, and together you locate the terminal for the Cipher Ex file. He flashes that mischievous grin again. “Go on, superstar,” he says quietly. “Show off a little.”
As you work, Jisung stands guard. The tension is sharp in the air. Finally you hear the electronic chime: success. The file is yours. But no sooner do you grab the drive than the alarm screams to life in a wave of red lights. Guns cock outside the door. “Time to run!” you gasp.
Jisung’s eyes are fierce and calm. “After you,” he says with a playful bow. You race out, weaving through crates. Bullets spit from the walls – metal pinging around you. Jisung is at your side in an instant, shoving you behind a stacked pallet as he returns fire. “Keep low!” he shouts. The scent of sweat and gunpowder hangs between you.
You crawl forward, keeping low as bullets zip overhead. Jisung covers you, peeking around the corner. When he steps close behind to nock a grenade out of its pin, your backs briefly touch; adrenaline flares in that brush of skin. He winks. “Made you look,” he whispers jokingly, tossing the grenade forward. The explosion down the hall kicks up smoke and chaos, giving you a narrow path to the stairwell.
As you retreat upward, an enemy sniper’s bullet whistles past and slams into the wall by Jisung’s head. A thin line of blood appears at his temple. Panic surges in your chest. You skid around the corner, pistol drawn. He beats you to it, kick-flipping around to tackle the sniper before he can fire again. Your hearts pound in unison as he pins the guard, disarms him with practiced ease, and drags you up the stairs. “You okay?” you breathe out, concern breaking through.
Jisung presses a hand against the wound. His brow furrows, but he manages a lopsided grin. “You know, you’re lucky I’m distraction and medic all in one,” he jokes, through gritted teeth. The humor masks the ache, and you can see something small and vulnerable in his eyes despite the blood trickling down. Without thinking, you cup his face to check the wound. Warm blood soaks your gloves, and you panic quietly. He presses your hand away gently. “Let’s find somewhere safe to patch me up,” he says quietly, voice low with affection.
You duck into an empty utility room, hastily closing the door behind you. Jisung slumps against the wall, pulling out a compact first-aid kit. Crouching, you carefully press gauze to his wound. Outside, muffled shouts and footsteps echo in the corridor. The adrenaline is ebbing, replaced by fatigue and relief.
Jisung leans closer, studying your face. “I didn’t want you to see me like this,” he admits softly. “Worth every bruise if it means keeping you safe,” you reply, voice shaky. He chuckles under his breath, though it’s tinged with pain. “Safe,” he echoes. “With you, I feel safe.”
He presses your hand to his lips in a gentle kiss of thanks. “Always,” he promises. For a moment the chaos of the mission fades, and it’s just the two of you catching your breath in the dim light. Your noses brush as he looks at you the bravado fading, leaving something earnest and tender in his eyes. You notice the clench of his jaw relax, the way his shoulders stop trembling. The trust between you deepens in that quiet.
“You know,” he murmurs, once you stand and help him up, “I might not come out on top of a blackout contest with you, but I can say with certainty I’ve never felt more alive.” The way he says it, heart on his sleeve, has you blinking against your sudden emotion. He’s always been confident, but hearing vulnerability like this – it makes your chest tighten. You step close, pressing a hand against his chest to feel his steady heartbeat.
Sirens in the distance herald backup on the way. “Time’s almost up,” you say, glancing at your wrist comm. “Drone says our exit point is clear in five.” Jisung reloads, then locks eyes with you. “Ready as I'll ever be,” he says, cocking a confident smile. Your stomach flutters you are ready.
Together you dash down the last staircase, crawling through a network of maintenance tunnels. The city skyline is just beginning to turn indigo as the sun approaches the horizon. By the rooftop, two black SUVs wait with engines idling. Your extraction.
As you climb out into the dawn, Jisung effortlessly flips over the ledge and lands by your side. His eyes are bright in the early light. You pause a moment, breathing in the cold air. He reaches for your hand in his, interlocking your fingers. There’s nowhere else you’d rather be, right at this edge of night and day with him by your side.
He leans toward you, voice soft. “Want to grab coffee after this mess? Something tells me we both could use it.” You laugh, adrenaline and relief mixing in your voice. “Coffee sounds great. But only if you promise not to owe me an after-action debrief kiss,” you tease.
Jisung winks and lifts your knuckles to his lips in a chivalrous gesture. “Deal,” he smiles, then pauses as if gathering courage. “But I should warn you…once I’ve tasted a victory like this,” he gestures to your joined hands “I’m not letting go.”
Under the pale light of dawn, you see his lashes flutter as he gazes at you. The mission is over. The danger is fading. What remains is the electricity between you, undeniable and real. You step forward and close the distance, leaving no space for hesitation. The helicopter blades whirl in the background as Jisung meets you halfway, and finally, gently, your lips brush together in a kiss that sparkles with promise.
