I think the show got wrapped up in the best way possibe. It was heavy, sweet, emotional, honest, and everything we needed. Everything Steven needed. To be loved and FEEL it, to open up, to finally let it all go. He finally has a therapist!! Itâs⌠really just a big heart squeeze.
Parts that I loved about the end, even though I loved all of it??
The way the show reminds us that we can percieve ourselves in such negative and toxic ways that we lose sight of who we are. Steven believed he was a fraud and a monster, and along with the pain he was bottling up, worm boi (or is it kaiju steven now?) was the physical manifestation of that.
Thank you SO MUCH to Connie; what a GAL. She was the one who snapped everyone out of their despair and knew exactly what Steven needed.
The water droplet falling in the darkness when Connie kisses corrupted Steven, showing the moment in which the love of his family and friends breaks through to him? That sense of release? Chefâs biggest kiss. Iâm also chef kissing when Steven turns back to normal and just lets it all out. He needed that cry SO badly.
As it is in the beginning, so it is in the end. Steven and the gems going back to where they started but having changed so much while they eat homemade cookie cats was absolutely wonderul storytelling. I love the way Rebecca and the crew tied everything in together so seamlessly, all the way from episode one to the finale.
The end card. HOLY SMACKS when I saw it coming, I was like WHAT. We had the ending in our hands the whole time, both visually and with the song Being Human, and that really hit me in the feels in a certain magical way.
Lastly (and to wrap up bc I feel like I could rant about this for quite a bit), although itâs bittersweet to see it end, one of the things I love most about SUFâs finale is how it reminds us that nothing ever stays the same. All things come to an end. But an end is just a new beginning; it entails growth and exploration, both for us and for characters like Steven, even if itâs happening offscreen. Whatâs great is that Rebecca mentions in an interview how that feeling, this notion that the characters live beyond what we see on the screen, was intentional, and thatâs another chefâs kiss right there.
Anywho, I feel sad as Iâll miss the show, but itâs a happy sort of sad. Iâm grateful to have watched it, and grateful for all the heart it will always have.
