Because with how quickly Grace was able to pick up Eridian, even with literally NOTHING about it being familiar the way a human language would be, they probably could have chosen Mandarin as the universal language on Stratt's Vat and he would have just. Learned it.

#ok this was actually something that bothered me about the book #i understand exactly why the movie chose to add verbal translation software (allows the audience to keep up)#but i think that decision also served the story in other ways #it’s incredibly unrealistic to me that grace would be able to understand eridian as quickly and fluently in the book as he does #even with his level of immersion #our brains are evolved to comprehend human language and phonemes #and grace claims not to be musically inclined. so i find it unlikely that he’d have perfect pitch #it would take years to reach his level of proficiency #not months #so his relative fluency in eridian on erid makes sense #but he wouldn’t have that on the hail mary #phm

Something about the bastardization of the story time and time again proves that nobody in power really cares about the people who would resonate with King’s Carrie White. A girl so ugly and repulsive she’s been removed from her own story. The societal need for women and girls to be constantly perceived as attractive is what fuels a fair amount of her torment in the book, but that person isn’t even allowed to exist on the screen. We cannot empathize with her; it isn’t allowed. It’s fascinating to me.
