“Well at least you got a well rounded childhood,” she chuckled. “I hope your brother knows Disney is for everyone.”

“Yeah, that’s true. Did you manage to find that one thing where you don’t have any doubts?”
“Oh no, I’m just here to watch everyone else throw out their stuff. What about you though? You bring anything?”

“Oh my god we would watch all the cartoons on the WB. That and Nick obviously, but I completely forgot. You’re like unlocking a memory.”
“I wouldn’t count out disney. It had some pretty good shows too.”
preston-bettencourt:
“Our gym lockers were short and fat and I never understood why they couldn’t do that all over the school, it was so much easier to fit your backpacks into,” he shook his head, a little smile. “Oh wow, so does that mean you can make me sound good? I guess that depends on how good of a teacher you are, huh? I do, yeah, I’m in investigative journalism,” he nodded. “Oooh, I think you might be a little naive there. People are getting bullied all the time, it just looks different as adults.”
“But with the long ones you have more space for gym bags and projects. Really, everyone should have fat long lockers,” she nodded along with a smile. “I doubt you sound bad, but I would be honored to teach you if that was something you were actually interested in? You’d have to let me know how good you think I am. Oh wow, that sounds a lot more fun than the school newspaper,” she chuckled. “What’s your preferred method of bullying people?”

“And miss out on all this fun? Definitely worth coming back a few days early. That smile too isn’t a bad reason.”
Even with the comment, she couldn’t seem to get her smile to dim. “This town really does know how to throw a party doesn’t it? I didn’t know this,” she gestured at her smile, “Was still considered reason enough for you to come back earlier.”

“Yeah, I didn’t really know what to bring either. Like, yeah there’s stuff I want to let go of, but burning stuff like that – like you said, very final.”
“I guess it’s one way to make sure you absolutely know how you feel about the object. You’re not going to want to throw it in if there are any doubts.”

“There is a reason we have the cliches,” he nodded. “I can’t say my school was anything like that. Maybe it’s because the lockers were too skinny,” he joked with a shrug. “Sounds like the type of thing that isn’t so cool in high school, but is pretty cool later. You still into music?” He wondered. “I ran the school newspaper, you know, the one absolutely no one read,” he chuckled. “Well who said I’d bully kids?”
“Oh, movies definitely lied about half sized lockers and skinny lockers. It was one of the biggest disappointments of high school,” she joked. “Thank you? Yeah, I’m a voice teacher actually. What about you? Do you still work in journalism? I’d like to think most adults wouldn’t let themselves get bullied.”
preston-bettencourt:
“Was your school one of the cliche schools? Did kids get pushed into lockers? Swirlies?” Preston asked with a tilt to his head. “What kinds of extracurriculars were you into?” He wondered aloud. “No way, seriously? I was cool? Shit, I feel like I maybe need to catch up on bullying people then, right?”
“Hey, the cliches had to come from somewhere, right?” she laughed. “Swirlies seems a bit 80s to me though. I was into music. Choir, piano, that kind of stuff. And you?” She shook her head at him with a humor, “I can’t say someone your age bullying kids would be a good look for you. You might want to rethink that.”
preston-bettencourt:
“I’m not telling you that you’re wrong, I’m just comparing our cool kids,” he clarified with a bit of a smile. “You never got bullied even once? I think that makes you either cool or intimidating,” he surmised, eyes narrowing as if trying to pick which. “I’d say I was somewhere middle of the pack too. I was kind of nerdy, but I dated a cheerleader for a year, so, kind of a big deal,” he shrugged, letting a chuckle fall.
“I never said not even once, but in general I like to think I stayed under the radar. I hope I’m not intimidating, and I definitely don’t think I was what anyone could consider cool,” she shook her head. “Oh? I hate to tell you, but if you dated a cheerleader, at least at one point you were definitely cool.”
bridget-wyatt:
“Oh my god the WB! I haven’t heard that in a long time.” Bridget laughed, “I was probably into those shows a little longer than I should’ve been. They’re just so fun.”
“It was THE channel to watch for all of the best cartoons. I almost wish they’d never sold out.”
preston-bettencourt:
“Were the cool kids in your school loud? I feel like they weren’t that loud in my school,” Preston thought aloud with a shrug to bookend it. “So if getting to the back of the bus is the scale of this ‘cool’ scale, how far back were you?” He asked. “I don’t want to lose a shoe, but I do want to be a man of principle.”
“Maybe not loud for loud’s sake but...rowdy?” she tried again. “Oh, I think I was just middle of the road. I wasn’t super popular, but I didn’t get bullied either,” she explained. “What about you? Where would you sit? Well you have some mighty strong principles, I’ll say that much.”
bridget-wyatt:
“No.. I was.. I was kidding. I mean, I think this happened on One Tree Hill but I just meant that it feels like a teen drama show.”
“Oh! I wouldn’t know. I think I might have just missed the CW years? I remember when it was Kids WB,” she laughed.
bridget-wyatt:
“It’s incredibly over the top and it’s straight out of a CW show, but come on. You have to admit that it’s fun.”
“Oh? I wasn’t aware it was based off a show. I guess that makes sense. I was wondering where this whole thing was coming from.”
bridget-wyatt:
“No! I mean it is final, but I think that’s why it’s perfect. It’s leaving it completely in the past and you never have to worry about it anymore. A completely fresh start.”
“Oh, no, I understand the theory and the whole closure thing, but, I don’t know. It seems a bit over the top I guess? Very teen break up song.”
nolan-wilder:
“You? Spending too much time thinking things through? Doesn’t sound right?”
“Nolan?” her face lit up before she could hold back how happy she was to see him. “What are you doing here? I thought you were in LA?”
preston-bettencourt:
“So you’re telling me you weren’t a back seat of the bus bandit growing up?” Preston teased with a little raise of his brow. “The sock would have been smarter, definitely, but I already said shoes, so I think I have to stick with it out of principle.”
“Oh you mean back with all the super cool, super loud kids? No. Not that I was a perfect kid either, but there are tiers, you know,” she nodded. “See that just seems stubborn for stubborn’s sake. Do you really want to lose a shoe?”
preston-bettencourt:
“I thought this was one of those things that the cool kids wouldn’t really bring something to burn, so if it really comes down to it, I might need to choose between my right and left shoe.”
“No, no, I like that assumption, because see, by that logic, I’m finally one of the cool kids,” she joked. “If you have to pick something to burn though, I’d go with a sock over a shoe.”
