The Water Works: Plenary 5
This last plenary was beautiful in every way shape and form. The skits were wonderfully done and it was amazing how it touched everyone in the room. I teared up so many times. It was truly the best plenary I been to. I loved how they did it too; instead of having a sole person talking there wereĀ āteamsā. I felt it was more effective that way. I really felt for the sexual assault victims tho. I commend them fo going up in front of the whole chapel and telling their stories. I am also proud of everyone else who went up there. Sharing isn't always the easiest thing. I hope to be that brave in the future.Ā
The Hunting Ground
The movie the hunting ground was alarming and shocking as it literally uncovered the intense rape culture that occurs in colleges and the lengths people would go to hide this horrendous acts. The movie further illustrated how people disregard rape victims and the seriousness that comes with rape. It is too commonly found that rape is intentionally hidden to protect the image of the rapist or the college and their even cases where the victim faces more public ridicule then the rapist. Rape culture is such a prominent issues all across the world that needs to dealt with but in order to actually see any progress in eliminating rape culture, we must start bring awareness to the issue.Ā
The Hunting Ground made me cry. It really hit home and I canāt believe how terribly sexual assault cases are handled in colleges. It's a very terrible thing that something as terrible as rape could be excused in media as well as normalized in society. An end needs to come to this. Seeing this movie opened my eyes and I wish everyone can see this movie to see the corruption.Ā
Class on Black Lives Matter
Today, in class, we discussed about the campaign of whether or not black lives matter. I understand that black americans have experienced great oppression over time. My overall belief is that we need to be taught what it truly means to be racist. There are so many different minorities in the world and we should not just focus on one. Black equality has a long way but once we see how other minorities are going through the same oppression, we will stop hurting one more than the others. In conclusion, all lives matter and one should not favor another
Sexual Culture
Talking about rape culture and sexual culture during this class was very interesting because it is extremely pertinent in todayās society, as I feel it probably has been for years. Even just walking down College Ave on a weekend, you notice the sexual culture and the things that go on in todays society. Guys canāt get into a frat party without a ratio. Sometimes the frat parties take girls only, and their guy friends are left outside, feeling shameful about themselves. When did this become okay? When did aĀ āratioā become something that is necessary? Do these fraternities do this because they want more girls at the party? What is their explanation of this? Someone in class said that the frat guys want more girls at the parties so the girlsĀ āfeel more comfortableā because they areĀ āaround more girls.ā I personally think thats bullshit, and thats the scary part. Additionally in class, we talked about Amy Schumerās powerful speech about confidence. Reading her story shocked me. When people think of celebrities, they think they had perfect lives. However, Schumer had a pretty terrible experience with a guy, and even though she says it made her more confident, it shouldnāt have happened in the first place. Her freshman year of college wasnāt anything like what a college freshman girl wants to experience, and her speech about confidence and being confident in yourself is a really inspiring story for girls in college everywhere.Ā
Its a sickening thought that the sexual harrassment and humiliation of women is a tool used to destory the communitites of rivaling countries.Ā Violence against women, especially rape, has added its own brand of shame to recent wars. From conflicts in Bosnia and Herzegovina to Peru to Rwanda, girls and women have been singled out for rape, imprisonment, torture and execution. Rape, identified by psychologists as the most intrusive of traumatic events, has been documented in many armed conflicts.Ā exual violation of women erodes the fabric of a community in a way that few weapons can. Rape's damage can be devastating because of the strong communal reaction to the violation and pain stamped on entire families. The harm inflicted in such cases on a woman by a rapist is an attack on her family and culture, as in many societies women are viewed as repositories of a community's cultural and spiritual values. The class that I was in today turned my stomach in ways I didnāt think it could. It moved my emotions when we talked about some of the acts that armies take in order to break down and control neighboring. This needs to end.Ā
Scrolling through an app, I came across this picture. This picture resonated with me because this is the exact conversation that I have had with others. Some people, regardless of how much you try, do not understand what it is to be a feminist. But at a time where more light is being shown upon feminism, I hope more people can steer away from the misconception they have around feminism.Ā
Not many know the real definition of being a feminist. Feminism is the belief that women are and should be treated as potential intellectual equals and social equals to men. These people can be either male or female human beings .The basic idea of Feminism revolves around the principle that just because human bodies are designed to perform certain procreative functions, biological elements need not dictate intellectual and social functions, capabilities, and rights. Feminism also, by its nature, embraces the belief that all people are entitled to freedom and liberty within reason--including equal civil rights--and that discrimination should not be made based on gender, sexual orientation, skin color, ethnicity, religion, culture, or lifestyle.Feminists--and all persons interested in civil equality and intellectuality--are dedicated to fighting the ignorance that says people are controlled by and limited to their biology. It does NOT mean in any way thatĀ āweā hate men. It's extremely annoying to hear thisĀ
Syria today
Today in class we discussed about Syrian female refugees facing harassment and isolation. Women refugees right now are struggling to provide for their families as the sole providers and itās sad that they have to often face humiliation, harassment and isolation. This civil war in Syria is tearing families apart which are mostly making the women and children flee the country. I feel as though the United States should allow Syrian refugees into our country especially the women and children. As Americans we should give helping hands to outsiders in need because who knows what will happen in the future and if we would need other countries opening up their gates for us.
I totally agree. It's not right for America to turn their back on those who desperately needed help just because theyāre seen asĀ āterroristsā. It shouldn't matter where they're from because if the tables were turned I would want somebody to lend me a hand esp. in these times.Ā
Bill Nye Debunks Anti-Abortion Logic With Science

Iām freaking out I donāt usually reblog this stuff but this is like incredible
This is the type of feminism I support
My daughter mentioned once wanting to be like barbie after watching life in the dream house on Netflix. She said barbie does everything so she could too. Never once did she mention Barbieās figure.
rnythicbitch
just a bit to add to this, the vice president of barbieās design even said
āBarbieās body was never designed to be realistic. She was designed for girls to easily dress and undress.ā
thats the only reason why she looks the way she does
I canāt even get over how much I love this.
^^Even though the Barbie Dollās body was meant toĀ āeasily dress and undressā there are people who take the look of the barbie seriously. Girls are starving themselves and thinking they canāt be āperfectā without looking like Ā Barbie Doll. The Barbie could easily have more meat on their bones and be as fun and as easy to dress and undress.Ā
This Article was good thoughĀ
Iām living for the looks on their faces
You will always be too much of something for someone: too big, too loud, too soft, too edgy. If you round out your edges, you lose your edge⦠Donāt apologize for being who you are.
Danielle LaporteĀ (via wordsnquotes)
men: *decided women werenāt allowed attend schools, study sciences, or have access to higher education* men: well if women are so smart then how come there arenāt many contributions from women in history huh
men: *takes credit for womenās accomplishments* men: why donāt women contribute anything?
**drinks tea onstage**#oh yeah iām in my play now lol#tea so hot
The irony in this is actually hilarious. If women arenāt given the opportunity to hone in on their skills then how could certain people, men, expect results for opportunities that were never available or easily attainable to women? I think double standards are very toxic but a mixture of hypocrisy+irony+double standards= blatant ignorance. When one fails to recognize or acknowledge the other side of the story and expect results or accomplishments from women for something where there isnāt even a high percentage of women in that field, thatās frustrating. When I was reading the second quote I was reminded about the DNA helix, particularly Rosalind Franklin and how she was basically the major contributor of the DNA double helix model yet the credit was given to Watson and Crick because of ONE thing they did that completed the model. In fact, when you searchĀ āRosalind Franklin and Watson/Crickā, most if not all searches come up withĀ āā¦Rosalind Franklin also CONTRIBUTEDā¦ā rather than acknowledging that she was the MAJOR CONTRIBUTOR. Credit taken where itās not due. Does that remind you of something ?Ā

this is so sad yet important
12 or under. Think about it.
Iāve never really understood how any man think itās even HUMANE to catcall a girl that is 13 years old? The indecency that some of these men have, especially in the city, where it seems dangerous just to have even the slight amount of skin revealed. There was in incidence that occurred when I went to NYC this past summer where my friend and I were walking in a very crowded street and we noticed that for the past 10 or so blocks, there was a man that was following and we knew for a fact because when we slowed down, purposely, he would slow down as well. Prior to following us, he catcalled my friend. When we sped up, he picked up his pace until he was ahead of us, to be in Control. At the end of the day, thatās what it comes to, right? These pigs just want to be indecent but also want to have control even as they commit their indecency? It wasnāt until we both decided to just run into a bigger crowd, which was sudden so it basically stunted him as to where we went. When I reflected on what could possibly want him to believe that refusing to acknowledge his compliment would be an entryway for him basically stalk us, I realized that what he wanted the entire time was validation and CONTROL.Ā
