There was something nice about hearing her Mum open up a little more without the need of her Mom pestering her not to be so shy or hide things. Despite all the bad that had come from everything, the small moments like this, the little sparks of growth has even Charlotte smiling a bit.
The pride they both have for her as well, lingers a little in her mind.
Still that smile doesn't last as long as she'd like, the mention of that 'bitch' only confirms that truly, her Mom wasn't just gone in the sense that her energy had all but faded. But that whatever was left, was being puppeted by someone else, though whether that could still be considered her Mom at this point is hard to say.
"I know it's not something you want to talk about, but.. you know, all the research notes, the stuff I was told. The version of you that tried to save the galaxy, and the version that... was this antisocial man-hater? It's hard to believe, but I don't really know all the details about it."
"How she raised you... how it all turned out. I don't want to force you to tell me everything, because I... don't think it's who you are anymore. But I do want to hear it one day. The whole story, just like I think if we can get Mom back."
Charlotte shifts finally back into a smile, "She'll have to finally spill her whole history. Not just the fun parts with you."
Mother Gates sighed. "Sorry, I should clarify. I'm still very much an antisocial man-hater. I was before I went to that galaxy, I was when I met your Mom, I was when Mom and I broke the Core, and I was when Mom and I made you and Sophia. No, when I say "almost", I mean..."
Mum trailed off and fell silent. She appeared to stare off into space over Charlotte's shoulder. It was... strange. Such memories finally recalled, along with the many reasons she did not wish to. And yet... how valid were any of those reasons now, in the face of everything from these past few months?
Mum shook her head with a smile.
"...it's fine, sweetie. You've heard a lot of it from Artemis already. Even that I went through therapy to suppress certain traumatic memories to help with my depression... memories, as it turns out, resurface in full when you're on the brink of death, no matter how heavily suppressed they are, or why."
"And, well, it's unbecoming of the Core Breaker to run from anything, let alone her own past, right? So it's about time I stopped running. Set a good example for Mom, too, for when we save her."
Now, how would she put it...
...
"...I'll be shocked if Artemis told you why "Gates" is our family name, 'cause even I didn't remember the real reason 'til last night."
Artemis appeared to raise an eyebrow.
The amount of times Les is going to be allowed to carry her like this, is going to rack up quite the debt. Yukichi's far from a helpless one, but these heights and the lack of control associated with them has her always on edge.
Rushed along by her friend, her eyes widen in worry as what was already a doubtful operation in her mind, had turned even worse. Leaping through into nothing, she can only trust her friend as they plummet. Yukichi doesn't panic or scream as much as she freezes up falling like a rock.
"L-les!!"
Despite holding on for dear life, when they crash she still goes tumbling a bit. The heavy thud of metal is first on Les' body, then thundering across the thankfully flat ground.
For a moment she's still and out of it, calibrations connecting to her legs, shaking herself slowly as she puts a hand to her head. "W-what's going on here?!"
"W-we crashed? Where are we?"
Lesago, more than happy to see Yukichi was safe and sound, hugged his friend tightly, sharing his warmth with her in the chilling winds. He only parted once she could stand herself up.
"If I had to guess... we're probably about halfway up Mt. Kolio itself."
A strong gust of icy winds blew past the two of them. Lesago waited for them to calm down. It was a minute.
"There's gotta be a ranger station somewhere nearby we can shelter in for the night. Or however long it takes for GGFF to fend off the invaders." Another strong gust of wind followed as he pulled out his smartphone. No signal. He switched to a proprietary frequency - one Yukichi might have recognized from her profession. Full bars, and on his phone appeared a crude map of their area, with directions to the nearest ranger station at the bottom of the screen.
He grabbed hold of Yukichi's hand, letting her huddle up to him.
"By the Forerunners, I am so sorry for getting you in this mess, Yuyu'..."
"...are you gonna do literally anything sir, or just stand there staring at me with a knife you're somehow magically able to hold with that flipper?"
"By my calculations, the most appropriate designation of the entity identifying itself as 'ALLMIND' is that of a filthy harlot."
What is Gates' immediate reaction to a serious, catastrophic mistake whenever one is made? Does the doom and panic set in instantly?
Rarely does she make catastrophic mistakes, but when they do happen, she'll usually pivot to mitigation after the realization hits her and she's able to calm her nerves.
Usually.

Fun Lore Dumps!
I've alluded to it before maybe, but Jeff really enjoys seafood, even more than the average Gelidan. He will happily eat whatever surplus crab meat the Demon Lord's mansion can provide him.
As much as the giant holes in the walls piss him off, he appreciates that the source of those holes is also a thorn in Demon Lord R'milia's side. He also appreciates that the blue woman can take a boulder pummeling or seven for the sake of his brownie points.
Jeff might have a li'l bit of trauma related to southern drawls and baby giggles. Just a li'l bit.
In case of accident, Jeff currently has fifteen identical pairs of glasses in his bedroom in Paradise (as opposed to the sixty-seven he currently has back home on Gelida).
Only one Gelidan was bold enough to sponsor Jeff's pursuit of a handheld planetary defense turret (which would have been complete if not for the whole Project "Tame the Beast" thing). That Gelidan was Lugtyer Jiyunatori.
Send me ✦ , and I'll reply with 3-5 facts about my muse to help you get to know them!
Remember to specify muse for multimuses!
Charlotte keeps barring Artemis from wiping ALLMIND's presence from her gauntlet.
Its behavior in response to this resembles one who is not too happy about that fact.

Knee Deep in the Valley of Bone
Starter for @severed-hearts's Rad Roach
November 3rd, 3549. Early in the morning on Terra, high noon on this backwater desert planet in the middle of nowhere, galatically speaking.
The Red Slayer had stopped by the planet in search of a third party bounty servicing station to collect on her own head, only to handily repel an ambush party lying in wait for her. All but one of them knocked out cold, and the one remaining had spilled the beans on what all had led to the Slayer's arrival. The remaining goon offered to lead the Slayer to his boss in exchange for mercy, and the fully armored Slayer agreed after leaving a bomb behind for the rest of the goons. Just in case.
Still at gunpoint, the goon boarded the Slayer's ship and provided the coordinates to reach his boss. Coordinates that led to yet another desert planet, but at least it was reasonably close. Once in atmosphere - thinner than comfortable - the Slayer landed her ship two kilometers away from the point the goon had told her was the boss's base, setting the ship to fly away and enter Orbiting mode.
The trek there was as barren as the rest of the planet, save for the massive bones littered across it. And what appeared to be the boss's base, standing tall in the middle of a proper boneyard. One of the guards had a laser rifle aimed at her before withdrawing it and giving a signal to the others. The gates opened, and the goon led the Slayer further into the base until the two of them reached a grand steel doorway befitting of royalty, the area suspiciously devoid of any other henchmen.
After shooing away the goon, the Slayer steeled herself for combat and blasted her way through the steel doors before stepping through to the other side, whatever awaited her there.
"I don't mean this in the wrong way Mum, but you know... if I read all this data correctly, not only was Rea like this, but Mom was too and so was I and Sophia. You couldn't convince any of us to stay home if you tried right?"
Not only could Gates reveal a thousand point plan, but she could assure the end of the universe, and Rea or Zak'yanna would have lept into danger.
It's only natural this girl of hers, the culmination of all their best sides, has their worst habit as a trait. To toss herself into danger, chasing the impossible. Gates should know, she's just the same.
Still the wounds she sustained don't seem to bother her, dismissing it as she sits across from her Mum to rest her hands on her chin. Leaning on the back of her chair.
"Well gossip is one thing, I felt like I got the inside knowledge of the upcoming movie starring you. Like your maiden name, and some history about well... they'd be grandparents huh?"
Strange, saying it out loud felt a little foreign to her. So instead she moves on past it, she doesn't want to focus Gates on the parts that bother her or the recovery after.
"Well I know you don't age like Mom did for different reasons, I know you used to almost sound like a cute pop idol. Ever think about going back to singing?" Singing? When did she sing? Who knows, Charlotte's just teasing now, and might be expecting a bonk on the head.
"I know like Sophia you piloted stuff, I bet you know already about my own uhhh... well I swiped an ID for an armored mech so don't be too made." Charlotte puts her hands together again as if begging for mercy.
"I guess I.."
"I kind of want to know why Mum always stuck with Bounty Hunting. Did Mom ever make you think there was something more out there for you? And well, I know a lot of this is in the past but I.."
Charlotte tilts her head and rests it on her own hands. "If you could see her right now, and she could anything back to you. What would you want to hear from Mom... I think, I'd want her to say she's proud of me. But I'm scared if she sees me and Sophia's souls together, she'll be mad.."
Mother Gates grimaced with half her mouth, knowing that Charlotte was irrefutably correct about Rea. About her, Zak'yanna, even herself and Sophia. Even about Mum.
"Oh?" A glance at the projection of Artemis, which kept its face innocently frozen. For good reason, as Mother would immediately find out. Before she could ask for specifics, though, the daughter had moved on to lighter bits of her past. Like her perpetual youth, and her not-so-perpetual voice.
"Sweetie, I couldn't even carry a tune back then." Not even the old doctor who defeated senescence could fix that.
She did nod, though, at Charlotte's confession. With a smile, relieved to finally hear it from her. She was nonetheless grateful for her daughter swiftly changing the subject. Sort of.
Mum leaned back, sinking into her hover chair ever so slightly.
"Before or after I met your Mom? 'cause before, I needed that escape from the business world. You should've seen how dull it got at times. After, though? ...honestly, it was just for the occasional stress relief. From other matters besides you three little troublemakers, if you can believe it."
What would she want to hear...? That question left her yearning, and Charlotte could see it plain as day. "At this point? Anything, really. As long as it came from her... that same reckless energy woman I met at that casino twenty-one years ago... not whatever that bitch turned her into." Just as plain was her answer. And just as plain were Charlotte's own doubts.
"No, she'd get it," reassured Mum after sitting back up. "She knew it was a risk, even if I didn't at the time. And seeing what you've become, I guarantee she'd be proud of you. Just as proud as I am." Would still mean the world to hear it from her own mouth.
"No white lies from her... unlike my mom, who told me one and turned me into a cold, antisocial man-hater for my whole life."
"Well... almost."
"Don't remind me, a mere moment I fail to recall a single specific detail. Like the length of hair on someone's head, they're quick to explain to me the differences in hair length and how it coincides to one's heritage."
Yukichi shakes her head, "yet they give this sermon with longer hair than mine, while saying their heritage encourages short hair. Are people really so obnoxious about those little things."
Maybe it was just her attitude, or the aloofness that she often carried about her for studies. She wasn't being disrespectful, but more representing the few that simple dislike being corrected all their lives for minor forgetfulness.
But that all goes to the back of the mind when things start to shake. It only takes seconds for Les to find himself firmly grasps on his arm, held in place like a support pole as she stares right at him.
"You said it was safe Les. If I start to fall out of the sky, I hope you know I'm going to use you as a cushion for my landing! And I will be rough about it! What's going on here?"
She hears them shouting a code, for the civilians to get to cover but she doesn't know what it means.
"What is happening Les!?"
Lesago chuckled as Yukichi recounted her experiences with the ice wielders. Flashbacks in his mind, to when Qilia had given him similar lectures about the thickness of his jacket. On any other day, he would have assured her that half of all Ko-Korians were just born that way, and that the other half played it up for the bit.
Any other day.
He had held up his hand to Yukichi as he waited for word from "Up High" like the guards did. When they got it, he swept her off her feet into another princess carry and dashed for the warpdrifts while the five guards took flight and made haste for the main island.
"I'll tell you when we're indoors!" he shouted, just before he leaped with her toward the warpdrifts.
...only to find that they had already been switched off in emergency, and that he and Yukichi were now plummeting.
The five guards all heard his ear-piercing cry for help. One of them, a Ko-Korian, motioned for the others to head to the main island as he dove headfirst after the falling tourists. He lost sight of the two almost immediately, with them having already passed through the clouds. Lesago likewise had no visual of the guard, even after flipping himself so that he faced upward.
With both him and Yukichi panicking, but with him assured by Yukichi's robotic death grip on him, Lesago poured all of his energy into whirling the winds below them, such that they would stop plummeting to almost certain death. Flying through the icy winds with only so much energy, though, all he could do was slow their rapid descent to a relative crawl, and knowing no alternative, he tilted toward Mt. Kolio itself in hopes that the snow-blanketed mountainside and the whirling winds would provide a softer landing for the two of them.
It was about as soft of a landing as it could be.
Lesago, true to Yukichi's word, served as adequate cushioning for the rough landing below the clouds on Mt. Kolio. Miraculously, they had landed on a flatter surface than most of the mountain had to offer. A cliff in the midst of icy winds, but a flat surface nonetheless.
It was a long moment before Lesago recovered from the landing. The first thing he did was look to Yukichi and approach her to check if she was in one piece.
Slayer’s Log, 3549-11-3-0632
Just my luck. I arrive on yet another damn desert planet to find the one station in the entire galaxy paying out for my bounty, and before I can collect, a bunch of no-name goons try to ambush me. Knocked out all but one of them, who told me at gunpoint - mine - that he works for the one who put a price on my head. Well, he's lucky I have such an open schedule this month, let's put it that way.
So he's leading me to HQ now. Apparently the boss's been looking forward to this for a while. It better be worth it. I had to leave a motion bomb behind just in case the other goons got any ideas, and I think it just detonated.
Definitely gonna ask why they thought half a tril' was high enough of a price to put on a bounty hunter's head. I have to know.
If I survive, update later.
