Turn your volume up, I accidentally made it kind of quiet.
Image/Time Final - Escape?
This short film explores the cycle of escape, and kinds of escape and attempts at escape, in relation to mental illness in my life, and the way the internal chaos creates conflict and confusion about what is the escape versus what is to be escaped from, and whether things are moving in progress and time forwards or backwards or neither or both, and how things happen in cycles, in circles, over and over again.
In this piece:
~Scenes expressing attacks or episodes. ~Types of escapes, or attempts thereof ----self harm ----pills ----age regression ----bath/suicice ~There were also scenes of everyday life kind of things, getting dressed, putting on makeup. These scenes show another kind of escape, though - covering it up like it isn’t there. ~In the scene where I wash my face, first the makeup runs all over my face. Then, it mostly comes off but some stays. This part is expressing how sometimes when you try to fix things it just makes a bigger mess - and how even if you do fix it it can’t necessarily be cleaned up all the way; some things just sick. ~There were various scenes depicting good and bad things tied together. For instance, ----medicine - confusion about if it’s an actual good step towards a real escape, or if it’s being pushed and forced on me, or if it’s a neccisary part of life now, or if it’s problem with using wrong medicines or overdosing. they are also juxtaposed on plates with candy as a comparison. ----another example of positive and negatives getting mixed together in portrayal is sexuality mixed in with things, like self harm, or age regression. ~These parts further the portrayal of the concept of the confusion and conflict caused having trouble what’s good and what’s bad, whether you're progrssing forwards or declining backwards worse, what is the escape and what are you escaping from.
As for sound, ~I used sweet, lighthearted songs from the 50s because I like they way they juxtapose and contrast with the content - and also because they bring out elements and feelings in the piece that wouldn’t have come out otherwise. ~I also used foley sounds that can be heard over and sometimes overpower the music. They give it a feeling of it being more about a life and actions and things happening in a world, rather than having the focus be just on the world inside the music. ~I used cuts between different songs and sometimes only background rustling with no music, to create purposeful inconsistency.
