Remi nodded, watching Ameliaโs face as she tried to deduce what unknown ingredients were contained in the pastry.ย โYouโre off to a good start.โ she promised.ย
Amelia bit into the pastry and suddenly her senses where filled by the berry and citrus explosion that filled the pastry. It was incredible she had never tasted anything quite like this before. The flavours complimented each other so well, she never would have imagined to mix the two together, that had to take a true artist.
โRemi!โ Amelia exclaimed.ย โThis is the best thing I have ever tasted.โ Amelia had meant every words she had said.ย
Sometimes the food on Tera could be so bland and quite flavourless, most things brought from the earth were still in a growing phase and were in the process of getting the best of what was brought with them. But this pastry was even better than she could remember those on earth tasting Amelia was in heaven.

Remi wrapped a piece of parchment paper expertly around one of the pastries on the plate and handed it to Amelia as she approached.ย
โOh no, the only price I ask is honest feedback.โ Remi insisted, bracing herself for the comments from someone who really hates the combination of lime and blackberries she added.ย
Amelia smiled at Remiโs generosity, honest feedback was something she was prepared to give. She was no expert when it came to baking but she could never deny a good pastry. The smell was enough to make Amelia want to open it there and then, she had originally been planning to wait until her morning break to taste Remiโs creation but that sent, it reminded her or citrus but there was something else, but she couldnโt quite place it.
Amelia unwrapped the expertly wrapped treat and inhaled the scent of the pasty.ย
โThis smells absolutely amazing, I think there is a touch of citrus here but iโm not sure there is something else I just canโt quite place.โ she smiled eager to take a bite.

The incoming storm had made Ameliaโs usually calm temperament a little more agitated and on edge than usual. It wasnโt often that she was like this but she was stressed about Lukas being there outside the walls in the thick of the storm while she would be tucked away safe inside the walls of Tera. She was tasked to go with the others to head to the watering hole to collect a water supply for the incoming storm. Since the events of Remembrance Day, Amelia hadnโt had much time to wander outside the walls. She had always been partial to pack a picnic and head to the banks of a watering hole and just read, but life in Tera had gotten more complicated since that day. Her workload had massively increased due to the number of injuries sustained on the events of that night. The night she was separated from Lukas again.
Amelia crouched near the waters edge and dipped her hand into the cool water, the water slipped through her fingers it was cold and had a silky feeling. As she peered down into her reflection she almost didnโt recognise the person staring back. The long hours in the infirmary were starting to become visible especially under her eyes, she needed more staff, or less injuries hopefully after the storm was over things would go back to semi-normal.
โListen we should really think about heading back soon. I donโt at all like the look of these clouds.โ

Remi was in the middle of making a list of supplies she would need to pick up after work when she heard the bell out front ring, singling that the cafรฉ was actually open and would soon see the morning rush of customers. Sheโd already been at work for hours, early mornings being one of the several high prices of being a baker.ย
She leaned over to open the lower oven door and used a towel to pull out a fresh batch of pastries. She was actually glad the place was open for business, as this latest batch was something sheโd been experimenting with and she was ready for public feedback. After assembling them on a large plate in an attractive manner, she headed out to the front of the shop.ย
โExcuse me, who wants a free pastryโฆ with a secret ingredient?โ she asked out to the small group of customers that had gathered near the counter, most either waiting to order or waiting on the coffee theyโd just paid for.ย
Early morning were kind of a thing for Amelia, he ritual before starting another long day in charge of the entire medical workings of Tera, and here she was yet again as she was every other morning awaiting her morning coffee. Apparently however today was starting off particularly well, with the tantalising offer of a free pastry Amelia knew that she shouldnโt, but it was free after all. She would just have to go for an extra long run this afternoon.ย โIf there are any left, I would love one.โ Amelia said raising her hand and splitting apart from the crowd to walk over the girl.ย โAre you sure I canโt pay you anything go.โ the doctor earnestly she had always believed that hard work deserved to appreciated and skills deserved to be paid for.ย

Scribbling more notes down Amelia paused for a moment when she heard Helenaโs words three years, she had been dealing with this for three years. How had nobody picked up on this, Amelia was a little ashamed in herself, it was her duty to ensure the Terranโs were healthy both physically and mentally. Helena must be very strong to know let anything surface until now Amelia thought whilst again beginning to scribble down her thoughts and the facts on the notepad.ย
Amelia quickly finished up her check on the vitals in silence working swiftly and efficiently. There was just bloods left to run but first she thought it was about time they had a little chat.
โAlright.โ Amelia started not really sure where to begin this conversation.
โHelena.โ she paused again she was trying to be delicate, she didnโt want to bring up old memoriesย old feelings but it was imperative that she knew.
โHelena, did something happen?โ....โThree years ago, I mean?โ It sounded like what Helena was experiencing was some kind of traumatic reaction that could be related to PTSD, but unless she was willing to be one hundred per cent open and honest Amelia knew that couldnโt be confirmed or helped.ย

River let out a low scoff, arms folding over her chest as she looked towards the doctor. โReally? You do know why I find that hard to believe, donโt you, Amelia?โ
There was no reason to be this hostile towards the woman. She didnโt seem so bad, and in fact, she appeared as though she genuinely wanted to make sure they were okay. River should be thankful they hadnโt killed her or Rory off yet. But really, itโs why she is so apprehensive. She shouldnโt want to stir the pot. But it didnโt make any sense, not when the Council had executed so many others for worse than what she did.
Pushing up the sleeve of her grey shirt, River leaned forward. Letting her arms stretch out on top ofย the table in front of them. โLooks like Iโm your guinea pig for the day, Dr. Wayne, was it? River Balish,ย Iโm at your mercy, doctor.โ
Amelia had expected some type of reaction like this, especially after having already met with Rory. She had hoped however that her intentions had come across as genuine and was pleased to note Riverโs compliance as she leaned across the table to present her arm.
Amelia reached deep into her bag and pulled out a pressure cuff and attached it to Riverโs arm before attaching it to a little portable machine that she brought with her for moments like this. Blood pressure seemed fine. Amelia just needed to take some bloods and she would be out of her hair.
โMy son Lukas is out there, you know.โ Amelia smiled trying to find some common ground.

Scribbling down on her notepad again, Ameliaโs concern for Helena was already growing, she could tell that the words she was saying were not immediately registering it was quite clear to Amelia that Helena was lip reading. She wondered if maybe her hearing had been affected by the gunshot, or if it was something much deeper.
Helenaโs response worried Amelia, she should have been brought here first, the council could have questioned her later. Dr Harper should have at the very least checked her vitals. She reached for the machine that she would need to check Helenas blood pressure. Amelia silently and quietly work attaching the band around her arm and starting up her machine. It wasnโt too loud, just a gentle hum. She scribbled down her vitals on the notepad. Perhaps a little raised, but thatโs not surprising considering the past few hours.
Her eyes were drawn to Helena as she softly repeated Ameliaโs words that Kade was going to be okay. Suddenly something clicked, her actions her aversions, her hearing loss, how out of character shooting Kade was. Amelia would have to run tests to make sure but everything seemed to be pointing to one possible outcome.
It was almost as Helena noticed what she was thinking as the next words left her mouth. Amelia felt for Helena she really did, it was almost as if she had become a completely new person, much less confident and almost scared, the strong captain of the sentinels was hardly recognisable.
โI know you didnโt mean too.โ she chose her next words carefully, but she couldnโt put it off any longer.
โHow long has this been happening Helena?โ hoping for her to respond sincerely.ย
She proceeded to continue her examinations while she waiting clipping the device to Helenaโs finger to check her heart rate expecting it to be raised to back up the results of the pressure test.

Rory didnโt get the impression that the woman was being anything but earnest with him, his nature inclining him to trust her even if she was allied with the people who were keeping himself and River locked up in there. He glanced at her bag and nodded reluctantly, his posture relaxing as he decided to be cooperative.
โIโm fine, but yeah.โ He assured her, doubting that there was anything wrong with him that couldnโt be fixed if he only knew that his friends and kid were okay.ย โI get it, but anything would be better than nothing.โย
โI understand, completely Rory.โย she said with a small sincere smile.
โI will try to make this as quick as possible.โ she began to search through her bag to gather the instruments she would need. Most of it was just routine checkup kind of stuff, but she would have to get some blood work done at the end just to check nutritional levels and those sorts of things.
As she was unpacking the device to check Roryโs blood pressure she glanced over in his direction, her curiosity getting the better of her she couldnโt hold back her question any longer.
โRory, I was wondering..โ she paused before continuing.ย โdo you know Lukas, heโs ...โ she paused againย โHeโs an outlander.โ another pause..ย โHeโs my son.โ

This wasnโt what sheโd expected. Taken as a prisoner but not really. She was trapped in a large dorm-style room with Rory, but it was a spare cadet quarter. Small for two, but they made it work. A few hours each day, a Sentinel came and took them down to what appeared to be a wreck room of sorts. It looked like an old training room they converted, so their prisoners had a place to play.
Of course, this was for one of a few reasons. Either to give them time to stretch their legs and busy their minds with tedious things. Whether that was working on a puzzle. Reading or playing chessโ there wasnโt much else to do. No tech, nothing they could use to contact someone outside of the Barracks. The other reason was when they had a visitor. Today, River had company, joy.
โDonโt tell me,โ she began taking a seat at the table that held a chessboard. โ โ your curious to see the Outlander the council refuses to kill? Believe me, you arenโt the only one shocked by that plot twist.โ
Amelia, had already seen to Rory and now she was headed to see the other outlander guest, if you could call them that she supposed, guests was probably a very loose term you could use but she much preferred it to prisoner or captive.
Amelia was already in the room when River was brought in, she was out of her lab coat so it probably wasnโt apparent at who she was and why she was here. Watching attentively as river sat down at a table containing a chessboard, as river began to speak, Amelia smiled politely. It was honestly no surprise that so many Terranโs had come to gawk at the newcomers, it was something new and something exciting, and much less dangerous she assumed than the events of the past few days.
โActually Iโm here to check on your health and run some blood test to make sure you were healthy.โย
Amelia was secretly excited about this, the blood tests would reveal how healthy the outlanders were, if they were eating enough what their bodies were lacking. She was hoping for a positive result it would put her mind at ease with Lukas out there and everything.

Rory was typically the kind of person who would befriend just about anyone, but he was hardly in the mood for pleasantries when heโd been locked up for god-knows how long and he had no idea if his loved ones were safe or even alive. He was sleep-deprived and manic, all with very little outlet for any of it.
โCan you talk to someone who doesย have the authority?โ He demanded with a desperate look.ย โIโm not justย missing my family, Iโm wondering if theyโre okay and I canโt do anything to help them from in here. And why am I in here? I didnโt- I had nothing to do with whatever happened. I was just trying to get out of the city.โ He took a step back, reminding himself that it wasnโt going to do him any good to yell at the doctor theyโd sent.ย โJust tell me what I need to do to get out of here. Iโm losing my mind in here, doc.โ
Ameliaโs heart beat faltered, she too understood the feeling of not knowing if family members were okay, and understood the pain that Rory was feeling. She looked up at him with a sadness in her eyes. She wished more than anything that she could do more, she herself didnโt even understand why they were here, obviously the council had caught them doing something they deemed suspicious, but Ameliaโs clearance level was not high enough for such information.
โLet me check you over, and make sure you are okay.โ She was sincere in her response and also intended to try to do the next sentence that escaped her lips.
โWhen, we are done, I will do my best to get some answers for you, but with my clearance level Iโm not sure how much I can manage. May I?โ she questioned holding up her medical bag.

Not sure where to start, Amelia opted for a physical question, the mental stuff we would need to be eased into judging by the girlโs expression. It was the usual signals, the fiddling of the fingers and the blank expression of someone searching for something to say, that was the tell tale signs to Amelia, that Helena wasnโt ready to speak about everything or anything for that matter. She probably needed too, but slow and steady was the best approach in Ameliaโs opinion, and she was not often wrong especially when it came to reading people signals both medically and emotionally, that was probably what made her so good at her job. Her ability to make calculated decisions based off a persons actions and test results, add in the empathy of a mother and there you had the magic mix that made. Dr. Wayne so special and incredibly important to Tera.
โSo Helena.โ Amelia began with a warm smile.
โFin tells me that you had a visit with Dr. Harper, do you know if he checked all your vitals, or will I have to admit you for those myself.โ
Straight to the point that was the best way with Helena, of course somethings had to be approached more softly but physical ailments not so much. Honestly Amelia had to admit that Dr. Harper made her sceptical. Yes he was part of the council and yes she would often have to answer to him and yes she trusted the council. But there was just something about him that she didnโt fully understand nor trust he always seemed a little bit off. Amelia put it down to having very important information running through his head but still in her gut there was this little seed of doubt. Not that she would ever let it show.
Amelia also had to wonder what Harper wanted with Helena, she blacked out and shot someone yes, and she supposed that was a council matter to deal with however she supposed that is should have been a whole council affair. Kade was okay after some much needed medical assistance, he would survive. Amelia wondered if she knew, she thought she should mention if to relieve only a little of Helenaโs anxiousness.
โKade will be alright, by the way. He is going to make a full recovery, it will take time but he will heal.โ
It was true it would take sometime for Kade to heal, but right now, Helena was her concern she had already seen to Kade the best she could she would have to check on him in a couple of hours but till then Helena was her point of focus. Tucking a strand of hair behind her ears, she began to scribble on the notepad in front of her just little things, like the fiddling of finger and her facial expression as Amelia spoke, nothing could go unnoticed even the tiniest of details could make a massive difference, helping Helena.

Rory had lost track of the days, but for however long he had been there it had felt like an eternity.ย The only thing distracting him from mind-numbing boredom was being sick with concern for his family and the other Outlanders. He hadnโt heard anything about what it was like out there and his mind had concocted a million worst-case scenarios that kept him awake at night. On top of all this, he hadnโt the faintest clue as to what they intended to do with him and River, or how long they would keep them here in Teran custody.ย
Hearing footsteps, Rory stood from his cot and walked to the edge of his confinement.ย โCome on, somebody here has to tell us something.โ He pleaded, his face twisted with worry. He doubted that whoever it was had come to release them but heโd take any kind of information they could offer him about their plight. โI need to get back to my family. I need to make sure theyโre okay. Could you- Can you at least send a message?โย
โHi Rory my name is Dr. Wayne.โ Amelia said as she entered the room and closed the door behind her.
โIโm just here to check up on you, make sure you are healthy.โ
Amelia did have to admit that it did pain her a little bit to see the outlander locked up like this, but she was sure that the council was just trying to protect them to keep them safe. That didnโt mean that she didnโt care any less for Teranโs prisoners she intended to treat them like any other member of society after all the health and well being of everyone was the very reason she was here in Tera, she was making a difference.
โIโm sorry Rory, I do not have the authority to grant those wishes. I have family Iโm missing too.โ she smiled softly hoping to make a connection with him to make this interaction a little smoother.
