“ i have a soul, fuck you. “

❝ I’m not saying it because you’re ginger, ❞ Amélie joked, the idea of boiling down somebody’s worth to their hair color was moronic. Besides, maybe she dyed it- she couldn’t prove or disprove that Beverly Marsh was a true redhead. They hadn’t really been on each other’s radar for very long.
❝ I’m saying it doesn’t make sense, you know. Souls? I mean if God exists, why would half of the world’s problems exist? I mean, why does Derry exist? Anyways, forget I said anything. It is way too early to be having this conversation- my mom and I were just talking about philosophy and religion last night. I guess the whole souls thing just resonated with me. It sounds like a pretty cool concept, I just don’t think I believe in it? So! When I said, ‘Beverly, do you think you have a soul?’ I meant it like ‘Prithee, Beverly Marsh, art thou a believer in the soul?’ and less like ‘Hey, you have red hair and I’m an asshole, can I hurt your feelings while I eat these fries?’ ❞
She took a bite of a french fry as if to add to her point, although it somehow made her feel MORE like an asshole. At least she could still feel the inherent comfort of where she was eating her snack. The small diner felt like a warm blanket on an especially chilly afternoon; the booths with their worse-for-wear cushions were a gentle embrace and the fries were what cocaine wished it could be. It was vastly underrated and one of her favorite spots to just have a think or a talk with a new acquaintance or old friend. And hey, maybe she could add ‘freshly insulted Beverly’ to her list. Yeah, maybe her first question when she sat down shouldn’t have been so...
Hard hitting?

“So – So! Do I have to do all the heavy lifting here, or are you gonna participate?”
“Does it look like I’m sitting here doing nothing, dude? It’s called researching, dip. If you want us to get a good grade, you should probably just let me do it.” Amelie didn’t mean to be short with the guy, but he hadn’t exactly made himself the easiest to get along with. Amélie wasn’t exactly going easy on him, but she had realized before class started just how much this unit was gonna suck.
See, her teacher had pulled her aside before class started, murmuring a little apology about how class would go. She was a bit worried, but just figured it was about the number of students in class. The teacher was assigning partners for presentations that day and she figured if there was an odd number she’d just be alone in presenting. Which was whatever- all her friends had gotten put in another class period anyways, but no. Instead, he partnered her with what had to be his worst student. John Bender. Which, she assumed, couldn’t be so bad.
However,
She was wrong.
God, she wouldn’t even care so much about her grade in this class if her mom hadn’t gotten so protective and uptight lately. It felt like her once free-spirited mother had learned how to hover-- and now Amélie couldn’t so much as breathe without questioning. It. Sucked.
And now this?

“Cuh-come in.” Bill backed away from the window to allow the girl enough space to crawl through if she wanted as his sleep-fogged brain tried to catch up with what was happening. He hoped she did, because it was October and getting colder with each day.
She was worried about him? It made sense, he supposed. It was true that he hadn’t been around much and that when he was he wasn’t fully himself. But it was the first anniversary of Georgie’s death, and while October and anything to do with Halloween had always been Bill’s favourite, he just couldn’t seem to think about anything besides how his brother should be there. About how he should be telling him scary stories while their parents thought they were sleeping… He hated October.
“I’m fuh-fine, really,” the boy insisted, his eyes drifting to the pile of work at the corner of his desk, next to his art and scattered pages of a story he’d half finished. “I j-just– It’s the time of yuh-year, you know?” His voice was quiet as he spoke, not so much for his parents’ benefit– they wouldn’t notice anyway– but from disuse. Elie would understand, he figured. She’d lost her brother too, after all. Though she hadn’t been directly responsible like he was.
“M-m-my homework’s all d-done, but thanks for o-offering.” He’d done it in record time. Bill had never really struggled academically, and while it probably wouldn’t get him the best marks, he was sure it was still good enough for a B at least.
Amélie took the hint and climbed in through his window, struggling slightly as she made her way in. Wow, it wasn’t really how she pictured coming into his room for the first time. Not that she had thought about it before because she hadn’t. Not really. Just in passing, really, when she’d think of checking up on him. Still, her mom had gotten more protective of her and Bill’s parents? Well, she hadn’t ever really seen them around before.
Bill didn’t really talk about them much either, now that she thought about it. Amélie rubbed the back of her neck as she looked around for a place to sit. So, she wouldn’t be helping Bill with his homework? Then she’d just have to think of a new way to help him. Or just ask him. Her eyes landed on his bed and she made her way over, sitting crisscross applesauce on the mattress and looking over at her friend. She really wanted to find the right words to say.
She could tell him about how she wanted to hang out on Halloween since it’d be hard for them both- or how she was afraid of how little time she had before her first November without her brother would hit her. She could tell him that she missed meeting him after their bike rides and that she wanted to make things easier on him. She could tell Bill a lot of things, but nothing felt like the right thing to say and she found herself falling into a relatively comfortable silence for a while as her eyes curiously roamed his room. She quietly murmured a quick, “I do know,” before switching her position to lay on her stomach and look over at his desk. She thought about mentioning the art- of suggesting a paint night- but she abstained.
“Is there, um, is there anything I can do to help you?” She asked just above a whisper.
It felt as if she could hear everything in the room; Bill’s voice just a hair above the silence. The breeze from outside purring against the window sill as if to invite their bones to freeze together as the autumn winds danced around them. Leaves hadn’t quite changed, but it was the right time for pumpkins to begin appearing on the doorsteps. Amélie had loved autumn. Now, it seemed, everything had lost it’s flavor. What was a season without your brother to enjoy them with? It wasn’t as if she had been miss popular, either. Her brother, that rambunctious little twerp, had been her world. And now Amélie’s world had found itself smaller and the only person who understood was beside her. And he was hurting.
And she wasn’t sure that she could help; their understanding of one another was the only quiet thing in Amélie’s life. Her mother was different than Bill’s parents. While his parents disappeared, her own mother was begging her not to leave the house. Sometimes she wondered if she should just commit to her role as Rapunzel and grow her hair out until somebody climbed to her rescue and taught her to let people into her metaphorical tower.
“I want to, y’know, um, I want to be there for you. We gotta stick together, y’know?”
She looked down, having nothing but a comforter to make eye contact with now.
“You don’t have to be alone.”
