Cook, Rothenberg Move NY-01 to Toss-Up

Today Tim Bishop was dealt not just one, but two blows in his quest to remain a corrupt congressman. The Cook Political Report and the Rothenberg Political Report – two respected, independent political forecasters – have downgraded Tim Bishop’s re-election chances to Toss-Up. From Cook Political Report:

NY-01: Tim Bishop (D): Toss Up. A September Siena Research Institute Poll showed Bishop leading GOP state Sen. Lee Zeldin 51 percent to 41 percent. But Bishop has had to air two separate ads to tell voters he's not under FBI investigation for helping a donor secure a fireworks permit for a Bar Mitzvah, and both parties privately view this Long Island slugfest as a much closer contest today.

The American Action Network and NRCC have both spent over $1 million attacking Bishop as a corrupt Washington insider, while Bishop has pivoted to attacking Zeldin for accepting contributions from polluters in the state senate. Bishop prevailed by a hair in 2010, so in some ways it's hard to see how he will lose this time. But Zeldin may be the toughest opponent Bishop has faced to date.

New York’s 1st District. GOP challenger Lee Zeldin has been closing on Rep. Tim Bishop (D) in a district that hosts very closes races every cycle. It looks like the congressman has a slight edge going into Election Day, but we expect it to be close. Move to Pure Toss-Up.

Tim Bishop has no place to hide from his scandalous record. For the last month, American Action Network has been on the air against Tim Bishop for his Obamacare support and pay-to-play scandal – both of which demonstrate how out of touch he is with Long Island. Now Tim Bishop can add “Toss Up” status to his worsening political nightmares.

Rothenberg Moves CA-07 to Pure Toss Up

Ami Bera’s political freefall continues. Just now, the respected non-partisan Rothenberg Political Report again downgraded Ami Bera’s re-election chances, this time from Toss-Up/Tilt Democrat to Pure Toss-Up. This change marks the second time in two weeks that Rothenberg has demoted Ami Bera’s re-election chances. And Democrats know Bera is in deep trouble. Just days after American Action Network and Congressional Leadership Fund announced a combined $2.2 Million against Ami Bera, the DCCC canceled a huge ad buy in Virginia to rush more money to defend Bera. Now AAN is up on the air with the “Unwelcome” TV ad, hitting Ami Bera for standing up for Obamacare instead of for his constituents hurt by the law. Unfortunately for Ami Bera, his record as a partisan player and Obamacare defender is turning into a millstone that’s sinking his re-election chances.

Fact from Fiction

The Duluth News Tribune separates fact from fiction in their endorsement of Stewart Mill, including some strong words for extreme liberal Rick Nolan. The whole editorial is worth a read, but here’s a couple of highlights that once again show Rick Nolan as an out-of-touch liberal ideologue:

At least twice Nolan cut off Mills while he was talking; referred to him at least once as “Stew”; talked about his “dad and your granddaddy’s store,” as though speaking to a small child; and on a couple of occasions turned to Mills and lectured him like he would an underling. The moments were disrespectful, rude, inappropriate and less than congressional. Nolan also has an “F” rating from the National Rifle Association, giving pause to anyone concerned about the Second Amendment. He voted for a tax on carbon and energy even though it threatened to cripple northern Minnesota’s mining, wood-products and other industries, as Mills pointed out. And his support for precious-metals mining and pipeline projects has been inconsistent at best through the years, even if his words this week suggested unwavering support.

Rick Nolan’s “liberal and radical” record betray his new-found rhetoric that he’s a “moderate.” Instead of Rick Nolan’s false attacks and condescending attitude, Minnesotans deserve a leader like Stewart Mills who represents their values.

Rick Nolan actually claimed he’s a moderate. Yep, at a debate the well-documented liberal Rick Nolan has become so afraid of losing this election that he’s now trying to run away from his record:

Rick Nolan might be the only person who believes that. The truth is, Rick Nolan has been a radical liberal his entire time in office – from the 1970s and now. Let’s take a quick look:

The Bottom Line:

Rick Nolan has gone from describing himself as “liberal and radicalized” to “moderate” in a desperate attempt to cover up his extreme liberal record right before Election Day. Minnesotans know that Rick Nolan’s record for single-payer health care, EPA regulations, and gun bans is wildly left of their values.

Ron Barber, the A-10 and lies

After last night’s debate, Ron Barber is in real trouble with the truth.

When confronted during the debate with his disturbingly inaccurate comments last year about funding threats to the A-10 and Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Ron Barber wove himself into a web of lies:

BARBER: “The question that was posed to me was, ‘Is there a long-term life for D-M and the A-10?’ And my answer was, ‘yes.’ In fact, does D-M and the A-10 not going to be around for a while? I said, ‘No, they’re going to be around.’” (Rep. Ron Barber, Remarks During An Arizona Public Media Candidates Debate, 10/7/14) Minute 1:33-1:59

But the truth is, Barber was asked if there was a “short-term threat” to the A-10 and Davis-Monthan, and he said “no”:

ARIZONA DAILY STAR: “Asked Saturday if there are any short-term threats to the A-10 and D-M, U.S. Rep. Ron Barber said flatly, ‘No.’ Barber, a Democrat and member of the House Armed Service Committee, noted that the A-10 fleet at D-M has had new wings and electronics packages installed, advancing their lifespans by at least 15 years.” (Tim Steller, “Threats To D-M Are Real But There’s No Need To Panic,” Arizona Daily Star, 9/1/13)

And just days before Ron Barber’s erroneous assessment, Republican candidate and former A-10 pilot Martha McSally had written an op-ed, published in the Arizona Daily Star, to help sound the alarm: “Wake Up And Unite To Save A-10 And Davis-Monthan.”

The Bottom Line:

Instead of admitting he was flat wrong about funding threats to the A-10, Ron Barber tried to deceive Arizonans with revisionist storytelling. With the A-10 crucial for jobs, the economy and national security, Southern Arizonans deserve far better than Ron Barber’s oblivious remarks and then deceitful cover up.

A telling admission

Congressman Rick Nolan’s name may be on the ballot, but his record of rubberstamping President Obama’s policies is what’s really on the line. Or at least that’s what President Obama seemed to say yesterday:

With Minnesota voters largely disapproving of President Obama and the policies coming out of Washington, it’s a moment of truth that Rick Nolan would sooner forget. Unfortunately for Rick Nolan, his record of voting with Democrats 93% of the time is inescapable. From Obamacare to EPA regulations, Rick Nolan has been a champion of President Obama’s policies that are costing Minnesotans each day. The only thing left for Rick Nolan is to admit that a vote for him is a vote to continue the same failed Obama policies Minnesotans can’t afford.

Tim Bishop scrubs "Lie of the Year" from website

With just 39 days until Election Day, Obamacare champion Tim Bishop has finally decided it’s time to retire the “Lie of the Year” he’s been telling Long Islanders. This comes just days after Lee Zeldin called him out on it during their Monday debate. Until today, here’s what Tim Bishop has been promising his constituents: “A central feature of reform will be preserving the freedom to choose what works best for you and your family—if you like your doctor, keep your doctor. If you like your current plan, keep your current plan.” (Rep. Tim Bishop, “Message On Health Care Reform,” News & Media, Accessed 9/22/14) It took public shaming for Tim Bishop to finally pull down his obvious lie about Obamacare. But this is just one of the many outrageous statements Tim Bishop has made about Obamacare. Remember, earlier this year he had the audacity to say that Obamacare is a “damn good idea.” Tim Bishop finally renounced his “lie of the year.” Will he now finally admit that Obamacare isn’t a “damn good idea” but actually a terrible one for Long Island?

If Congressman Rick Nolan wants to pretend he’s all for 2nd Amendment rights, he needs to do a little more homework, apparently. Not only does he fail basic gun safety rules with his finger on the trigger, but his hypocrisy is on full display as he poses holding a gun he wants banned.

Now Rick Nolan can add an “F” on gun safety to his “F” rating on gun rights.

3 Clues for Tonight's NY-01 Debate

The first NY-01 congressional debate is on tap tonight between scandal-plagued Congressman Tim Bishop and Senator-Soldier Lee Zeldin. Given Tim Bishop’s long-time troubles with the truth, it’s usually a wild guess which version of him will show up for a debate. But just this month, Tim Bishop has given a few clues which dishonesties are in the running: 1. Obamacare booster

Bishop on Long Island TV: Under the Affordable Care Act, Medicare “savings [are] generated without any reduction of service, without any increase in copays, no denial of procedures.” Albany Business Review: In part due to the Affordable Care Act, MVP Health Care “is dropping some of its plans tied to Medicare and raising rates for other related coverage under the health care program for elderly people.” 2. Fake National Security Expert

Newsday: U.S. official rejects Rep. Bishop's claim 40 Americans who left to join ISIS are back in U.S.: So far, Bishop is the only one to use that figure, and he won’t come to the telephone to explain where he got it. A U.S. official familiar with the estimates told Newsday that the figure of 40 was “wildly inaccurate,” indicating it was much lower but refusing to be specific. 3. “Friggin Mailman”

Newsday: Lawyer: Justice Dept. probe of Bishop closes with no charges; ethics probe still open Or at least that’s the headline Tim Bishop wanted. As a self-described “Friggin Mailman,” Tim Bishop has delivered half-truths and full lies regarding his cash-for-favor fireworks scandal – with the latest fabrication appearing in his TV ad that whitewashes the above headline. The Bottom Line: Tim Bishop must have a hard time deciding which lies to tell Long Islanders when his liberal and corrupt record is challenged. Long Islanders deserve better than a scandal-plagued congressman who won’t tell them the truth about Obamacare, national security or ethics investigations.

Higher gas prices, anyone?

Want to pay more for energy? Vote for Pete Gallego. Last night, Pete Gallego gave a resounding “hell no” to a comprehensive American Energy Solutions bill that could lower costs and create jobs for more American energy. Pete Gallego voted: • No to allowing Keystone XL pipeline construction (today marks the 6-year anniversary of permit waiting) • No to increasing oil and gas leasing access to federal lands and offshore • No to controlling the EPA's regulation ability of greenhouse gas emissions from fossil-fueled power plants • No to limiting federal rules on hydraulic fracturing for natural gas And “no” to even more energy access provisions. From gasoline to electricity, energy prices are guaranteed to affect every Texas family and business. Yet for years Washington has been standing in the way of more American-made energy. And Pete Gallego is determined to be part of the problem. His vote last night was just the latest example of his record of rubberstamping President Obama’s agenda instead of working to make energy prices affordable for Texans. The Bottom Line: Pete Gallego is running out of excuses for his hyper-partisan record of voting with Washington Democrats at the expense of Texas families and businesses. From Obamacare to higher energy prices, Pete Gallego will defend President Obama’s agenda and tell Texans to pay more.

Congressman Rick Nolan has a lot to say about nearly everything. Except when Obamacare is failing in his state. Earlier this week, news came that MNSure’s largest insurer is dropping out of the Obamacare health insurance exchange. As KSTP reported, lowest-cost insurer PreferredOne accounted for nearly 59 percent of MNSure enrollees. Now up to 30,000 Minnesotans cannot keep their MNSure plan. And many more Minnesotans will face higher costs and fewer options. Yes, these are some of the direct consequences of the Obamacare law that Rick Nolan supports. And now look what it’s doing to Minnesotans. Steeped in his “liberal and radicalized” ideology, Rick Nolan can usually be found extolling the virtues of Obamacare and even championing single-payer health care. But as Obamacare’s fallout continues in Minnesota, where is Rick Nolan’s voice now? Crickets.

Remember when Tim Bishop called Obamacare a "damn good idea"?

Well, today a New York health insurer is dropping some Medicare plans because of Obamacare’s Medicare Advantage cuts. As the Albany Business Review reports:

MVP Health Care, an insurer based in Schenectady, New York, is dropping some of its plans tied to Medicare and raising rates for other related coverage under the health care program for elderly people. [. . .] [Denise] Gonick said the decision was prompted in part by reduced reimbursement payments tied to Medicare, the federal program generally covering people age 65 and above. [. . .] MVP has been facing declines in revenue during the past two years, which Gonick has attributed to industrywide challenges tied to implementing the federal Affordable Care Act.

So not only will the 1.2 million New York seniors on Medicare Advantage have fewer plans from which to choose, but they are also facing higher costs as Obamacare directly cuts the program by over $156 Billion. This is just the latest news showing that New Yorkers continue to face high health care costs and few choices under Congressman Tim Bishop’s “damn good idea” of a health care law. The Bottom Line: From the play-to-play scandal to Obamacare, New Yorkers are left paying the price for Tim Bishop’s self-serving agenda. New York seniors and families facing higher health care costs and fewer choices know they can’t trust Tim Bishop to tell them the truth about the unworkable Obamacare law he’s forced on them.

Scandal-plagued Congressman Tim Bishop has been caught in a cover-up… again. This time trying to deceive his own constituents. First, Tim Bishop had his lawyer tell the press that the Department of Justice investigation is closed (DOJ won’t confirm). Then he rushed to cut an ad with the reported news—and a whitewashed headline. Can you spot the difference?
