Hello Ruby was a very cute way to get kids more interested in computers. I decides to do Exercise 1: Name Your Computer. Dell-ighted to meet you is a pun, because my computer is a Dell. The serial # is my old football number (24), my graduation year (18) and my birth year (96).
Sometimes it is difficult to understand what is going on in the mind of someone in jail. But Steve’s inner monologue gives us an insight into what he is thinking. To Steve, he can’t imagine what it would be like to be enjoying a game of baseball at this moment, when his life is about to be completely ruined. How could the world be full of such happiness yet also be full of such cruelty and injustice? It almost felt unreal, a facade that the world tells us to try and hide what is really going on in our “dungeons”.
Often times I think that prosecutors will go for a harsher sentence when they think the jury will be swayed. In Steve’s case, the prosecutor definitely meant to sway the jury into convicting Steve of murder based on his skin color and association with criminals. Even though Steve believes he didn’t do anything wrong, he is still on trial for murder, and it is something that he could actually end up doing time for.
We like to think that life ins’t just in black and white. We like to think that we can make rational decisions with no influence from race or skin color. But this belief isn’t reality. In reality, life is in black and white. People will convict based on skin color alone, and although the majority of people would say that they aren’t racist, things like sentencing an 18 year old African American to life in prison based on subconscious racism.
If I had to pick a few songs for the Monster soundtrack they would be Monster, F*ck the Police, and Hurricane. Kanye’s Monster talks about how you are whatever people say you are. If everyone only sees a monster, then it must be true, regardless of whether or not you think so. N.W.A. is known for their poetic resistance to the unjust police brutality in Compton, and how all African Americans can be racially profiled by cops even when they aren’t doing anything wrong. Lastly, Bob Dylan’s Hurricane is a song about a famous black boxer who was framed for a murder and convicted to life in prison when the evidence clearly showed how innocent he was.
This sounds like Steve is spilling his insides and nobody cares what he has to say. That instead of being treated innocent until proven guilty and being seen as a human, he is being ignored by everyone around him. The people defending him that should be humanizing him, are the ones included that are making him feel as if he isn’t a person at all. His defense should be giving him a voice, but this quote shows that he feels he has no voice and sadly, this is probably the case with most cases in the criminal world.
This quote is hauntingly accurate in today’s society. It seems everywhere we look there is another instance of a court case where the suspect is a minority and automatically dismissed as a criminal. No one wants to believe that our police force, the people who are meant to protect all of us, sometimes are racist and target minorities. I believe the entire novel is a statement of how we automatically assume guilt based off of race, and that we need to make efforts to change that.
This quote was truly heartbreaking. It is sad that so many youths end up in jail, and are so distraught and overwhelmed that they become suicidal. I can’t imagine a scenario where I would be angry about being alive, and the fact that kids younger than me have to go through something like this is almost unbelievable and saddening.
I found this quote to be very interesting because it speaks to our independence as individuals. Aunt Beast finds it so strange that people from earth never reach out to other worlds when it is really because we haven’t found other worlds or found the need to communicate with them. Sometimes we do this in life as well by shutting others out while we only focus on ourselves.
If I had to cast my own version of A Wrinkle in Time, I think I would choose Tessa Thompson to play Mrs. Which instead of Oprah. She is less famous which I think would help the audience not be as distracted thinking “oh that’s just Oprah” and instead really delve into the film. She has played a strong female lead in multiple films such as Thor: Ragnarok, Dear White People, and Creed, so it would be easy for her to assume a powerful female lead role in A Wrinkle in Time.
On pages 85-88 they are trying to explain to Meg how the tesseract works and she struggles to grasp the idea behind it, so they dumb it down for her. On page 86-88, L’engle chooses to include pictures with the descriptions to help the reader understand it as well. This, in my opinion, strengthened this part of the book because I feel like many young readers may struggle with this concept. By L’engle including these pictures, the reader is able to read and visually see what they are describing.
I also thought this graphic was extremely helpful with understanding how the Mrs.’ travel. I also found it comical how Charles Wallace kind of automatically understood after being told while the others still struggled with the concept.
The movie version of A Wrinkle in Time was interesting to say the least. I think that the casting choices made the film less magical as I really only viewed Mrs. Whatsit as Reese Witherspoon and Mrs. Which as Oprah. I also felt like the acting was a little messy and at times didn’t seem to fit into what was going on. The characters didn’t seem to resemble their novel counterparts either, which was odd. Overall a decent adaptation, but by no means great.
Over Spring Break, I went and saw the movie “A Wrinkle in Time”, and I have to say I was not that impressed. Although I did appreciate the diversity in the characters, and the fact that it addressed insecurities that we all struggle with, but there were a lot of things I did not like. The whole movie seemed to include a lot of cliche’s, from the typical mean girl squad, to the dreamy love interest. It almost seemed very unrealistic at times because everything was pretty predictable, and there were a lot of surface level elements that I feel the movie could’ve gone deeper into. Along with this, I thought there were a lot of things thrown in such as Ms. Whatsit turning into a giant piece of cabbage that made me think what the heck is going on. Also, the characters are depicted very different in the book than in the movie, so that sort of threw me off when I was trying to read the book.
Overall, it was a decent movie, with some really cool animation aspects included, but I would have liked it to have been made more similarly to the book.
I agree that the movie definitely seemed to be the Hollywood version, and that the characters had many different qualities than we see in the book. I definitely wished they had chosen actors and actresses that would have backed up the novel’s characters. The movie itself didn’t seem to be that terrible in and of itself, but definitely not a great adaptation of the great novel we are now reading.

I also found this illustration to be helpful. As a huge Marvel fan, I always wished that Marvel Studios had explained their version of the tesseract as easily and eloquently as it is explained here. I think the explanation definitely helps children wrap their mind around something so alien (excuse my pun) to them.
“The adventure is for Wendy”

When reading Peter Pan, it is easy to see Captain Hook and the pirates as the antagonist and Peter and the Lost Boys to be the protagonist because of the revenge Hook wants on Peter. However; after this statement made by Tarr, I could now see Wendy as the protagonist and Peter as the antagonist. If Wendy’s arch is supposed to become a mother, that requires her to leave Neverland and grow up, which Peter is trying to prevent. Looking at the story dynamic this way, now seems so obvious to me, but I failed to see if before Tarr pointed it out
This makes so much sense to me. My 2nd response paper was actually how the theme of Peter Pan is “motherhood” rather than childhood and innocence. I think that Wendy is definitely meant to be the main character, with Peter as her opposition.
“Mrs. Darling was now dead and forgotten.” -Barrie
I thought this was a really harsh sentence towards the end of the book. It kinda sounds as if Wendy’s story as a mother with her children as just replaced her story and experience of being a little girl with her mother. I just thought it was odd, but it could also go along with the cycle that Peter just comes for the kids for generations to follow. Maybe because it’s the same story with each mother and daughter, it is easy to forget where it all started.
I wonder if this could also be Barrie alluding to his feelings towards his own mother once she began to ignore him after his brother’s death. He seemed to have a new family, and could very possibly have felt his real family had long since been “dead and forgotten”.
In this passage, Hook is confused as to how some child could be sustaining in such battle against a pirate such as himself. Baffled, he asks Peter “who and what are you”. Peter just smirks and announces how young and joyous he is. I think that this was Barrie’s way of showing how youth should always defeat aging, because at that age, no one can be truly sad.
This quote about Peter made me think of Barrie. Could this be a glimpse of his distaste in mothers after his own essentially ignored him after the death of his brother? Could the only mother he doesn’t dislike be Sylvia? I think in many ways, Peter represents Barrie and this is but one instance of it.
