Most of the mischaracterization Riza suffers from wouldn’t be nearly as popular if people actually understood why she follows Roy and it isn’t just love and loyalty.

One of the main reasons she stays by his side is because she sees herself as the guardian of flame alchemy. She’s trying to make sure of two things: 1. no one ever gets their hands on it again. and 2. the only person who can use it never misuses it again. That’s why she follows him. She has to. She’s watching the weapon she helped create.

And she has to keep him alive not only because he’s the one with the political power (meaning he’s her only real way to make sure the trials happen), but because he has to live long enough to atone for what he did with flame alchemy. The power SHE gave him.

From Riza’s point of view, every crime Mustang commits is hers too. Every time flame alchemy is used to kill that blood is on her hands too. Every person he killed is someone she killed by proxy.

She’s not just guarding him. She’s sharing his guilt. It’s like she’s trying to atone for her own sins, but he has to atone too so she can atone through him.

I think this Hannibal quote fits them really well: “You and I have begun to blur. Every crime of yours feels like one I’m guilty of.” Like yeah she obviously loves him. But reducing their relationship to just that completely flattens what’s actually going on.

Roy Mustang is the type to joke about marrying Riza Hawkeye for tax benefits. Hawkeye is the type to take it seriously. Penciled in that day at 4pm so she can be home to feed Black Hayate at 5.

Mustang still thinks it’s a bit until they’re signing papers. He tries to joke about how lucky he is to marry a beautiful woman to hide how he’s freaking out. Hawkeye tells him that, with all due respect, they’re already destined to spend eternity together in hell, so might as well make the paperwork easier.

She signs the papers and leaves Mustang standing open-mouthed in the office. They never talk about it again.

Fullmetal Alchemist AU

What if there wasn’t enough time for Ed to get to the armor and attach Al’s soul?

Ed’s missing a leg and bleeding out fast, he doesn’t have the strength to knock down the armor and preform the alchemy required to bring Al back, so he does the next best thing. He attaches Al’s soul to his own body.

Ed and Al end up sharing a body. They take turns controlling, the other whispering in their brother’s head. Winry, Pinoko, and Mustang know, but everyone else just thinks the Fullmetal Alchemist is crazy. One minute he’s a hot-headed brat and the next he’s just ever so polite and kind.

Unlike with the armor blood does not stick to humans for long, Ed has to carve the transmutation circle into his flesh. Anytime the scar begins to fade Ed has to re-carve it. Eventually he may even tattoo the circle into his body.

At Briggs Al start visiting the gate and Ed panics, because for the first time since he was 12 he’s alone in his head and Al is just gone, gone, gone.

When Al finally gets his body back it’s not getting re-adjusted to feeling he has to worry about, it’s the being alone. Neither Ed nor Al are used to being without the other in their head, to always being in control.

Ed starts conversations only to realize there’s no one there. Al’s on the other side of the house. Al blanks out in the middle of doing something, expecting Ed to take control. It takes a long time for them to recuperate, a lot longer than it takes in cannon.

Inspired by that one decade old fic (we haunt ourselves by sekalaista!) Also thank you Thorn for accidentally reminding me it existed. I was originally drawing fomphonse but i couldn’t help myself… my hand drew Ed on it’s own….

Al and Ed's dynamic is so funny bc Edward's got such a complex about being the older one even tho the difference is by one year and he thinks himself a single mother of one raising Al by himself and he needs to protect his little baby brother at all costs then Alphonse is like holding Ed's leash and telling him no when he barks/lunges at passers-by and is making sure he gets his rabies shots and doesn't die doing something stupid also protecting him at all costs etc
