ik i rant about the wymack stuff a lot but god it is rough
Neil outright admits he stole Kayleigh's letter and has had it for MONTHS without Kevin knowing. Like, one of the only personal things he has of hers has been at Palmetto this whole time and now is being used against him.
And Neil outs this in front of the entire team and Neil explicitly switches to English saying that Kevin is going to go public about who his father is putting Kevin on the spot while he's actively telling Neil no.
(And this is after Kevin kept Neil's own secret for months on his behalf and literally just got choked out over it)
And like, Neil is right! The identity of who Kevin's father is has been a media spectacle since Kevin was born...because Kayleigh in her lifetime never wanted revealed. Like, Kevin would be outing something his mother never wanted to be public knowledge for several reasons.
The text validates that this is the right choice because Wymack is owed this information and it is "long past" when Kevin should have told him which feels so unfair. Kevin has no idea how Wymack would have taken the news that he was his father (canonically he doesn't take it well) and is literally on the run from his mob cult who wants him dead. If he miscalculated then he could be screwed.
And like, idk, I think if you want anyone to blame maybe it should be Kayleigh? Not Kevin who had no say in his mother's choice to hide it or his parents hooking up in the first place?
I think the worst part is when Neil tells the Foxes and shows far more empathy for their reaction to Coach being Kevin's father than for Kevin himself...and Kevin is doing this FOR NEIL.
And like I get it. Neil is a survivalist who would see this as something to use but the narrative and the Foxes at large all seem to agree this is for the best. That Kevin has deeply wronged Wymack by not telling him. And like...you're telling me none of the Foxes would understand Kevin and his daddy issues? The daddy issues team?
Writing Wu Yanzi is difficult because there's so little of him in canon, and then he also sucks really badly, so it's tempting to make him a very flat scum villain.
I try not to write flat villains always, but with SVSSS fanfiction, it feels like a particularly offensive crime. And it seems like an especially "missed the point" direction to take when writing Shen Jiu's POV.
On one hand, Shen Jiu is one of the least generous narrators that I've ever written. He's cruel, vindictive, violent, hateful, jealous, envious, deeply traumatized, and prone to assuming the worst about the world and everyone around him.
On the other hand, Shen Jiu is perhaps the most likely to be generous towards Wu Yanzi, even when he hates his master. They would have spent a LOT of time together. Traveling. Eating meals. Sleeping in the same locations. Finding work and then executing the job. Wu Yanzi was probably all kinds of abusive, but if Shen Jiu felt like he was in legitimate danger constantly, he probably wouldn't have stayed so long. Abusive relationships are rarely 100% awful all of the time, which often makes victims doubt themselves. And Wu Yanzi apparently did teach him some things and let him keep a weapon. He fed and sheltered Shen Jiu. He took Shen Jiu away from the Qiu manor fire, saving him from any authorities instead of abandoning him.
When Shen Jiu was apparently in trouble with Yue Qingyuan at the Immortal Alliance Conference, Wu Yanzi does reveal himself and intervene, instead of just slinking away, and we don't KNOW that Wu Yanzi was purely motivated by hatred towards Cang Qiong and the cultivation world, or self-preservation / hiding their activities. Wu Yanzi also could have been motivated by some genuine desire to protect his student as well! We just don't know!
Personally, I think Wu Yanzi was very likely an extremely bitter, vengeful man, who both resented and enjoyed his criminal life. For one thing, killing and mugging people at the Immortal Alliance Conference seems like a pretty stupid plan to me. I think he probably dragged Shen Jiu through hell and took his anger out on the convenient target of his student frequently.
But it's important to remember that Wu Yanzi must have a backstory. A personal history that explains his inability or unwillingness to be a kind teacher, to regulate his own pain, to temper his own self-destructive impulses. There must be reasons why he has skills but no allies, no family, no friends, no sect. He could have been decent to Shen Jiu sometimes, in his own way, as well as awful.
People can often be extremely cruel towards those who remind them of their own flaws and insecurities. This may have been Wu Yanzi to Shen Jiu, but also Shen Jiu to Wu Yanzi. Shen Jiu's feelings on Wu Yanzi have to be very complicated! (Even if I think Shen Jiu has repressed most of them!) Like Shen Jiu himself, Wu Yanzi was still a person, even if he was also a scum villain.
I want more Shen Yuan + Liu siblings interactions where it becomes increasingly more obvious that Shen Yuan thinks Liu Mingyan is cooler than her brother (she was his blorbo too!) and both the Liu siblings are utterly baffled by it. Liu Mingyan ends up using this adoration to push Shen Yuan in the direction of ships she approves (ie AWAY FROM HER BROTHER). Liu Qingge becomes extremely jealous of the attention Shen Yuan gives his baby sister, and begins the mortifying ordeal of showing off to his crush, often adjacent to his sister who knows what he’s doing and is actively trying to make him look like an idiot so he stays out of her yaoi.
LMY, eyeing her brother as he approaches with flowers: Oh Yuan-ge, did you know Gege used to sleep with a stuffed horse or else he would cry until he threw up? He still has the horse. It’s named Pinkie, because it has a pink nose.
SY, experiencing cute aggression with the power of 1,000 suns (internally): OHHHHH MY GOD THAT IS THE CUTEST THING IVE EVER HEARD OF, THE GAP MOE IS TOO POWERFUL!!!!!! RAGHGGGG IM GONNA DIE FROM CUTE OVERLOAD!!!!!!!!!!!!
SY (out loud): Pinkie is a great horse name, I’d love to see it sometime. Reminds me of the stuffed cat I used to sleep with, named Kitty. :)
LMY (internally): Damnit…
LQG, listening to the entire interaction: Maybe… Kitty could meet Pinkie?
Also potentially incredible if Liu Qingge believes that is his sister is actually wingmaning him with her superior knowledge of romance since every time she gets involved he and Shen Yuan get closer.

I know disciple era Qijiu have basically limitless angst potential, but I also think they have massive unexploited comedy potential.
I love bungo stray dogs. it's the manga equivalent of when kids keep making up new rules to games so they never lose
Saw this post and immediately had to make this
I cannot stop thinking about these video thumbnails. I might draw more of them. originals under the cut
Shen Qingqiu: This master has a question. Is it racist that we refer to our inner turmoil as 'heart demons'?
Tianlang-Jun: Probably, but I don't think it matters because in the demon world they are called 'heart humans'
Shen Qingqiu: Fascinating
Luo Binghe: What about if you're a half-demon?
Shang Qinghua: I don't think it matters because we should just call what you have by its actual name: PTSD
Luo Binghe: Curious, and how do I cure this pee-tee-es-dee?
Shen Qingqiu: No technical cure, but it helps talking to someone you trust about your feelings
Luo Binghe: !!!
Shang Qinghua: Besides your husband! And preferably a trained professional!
Luo Binghe: [sad luo binghe noises]
#lbh: shimei - are you a trained professional?
#lmy: technically - in writing
#lbh: good enough - it all started on the day I was born - neither of my parents showed up...
#lmy internally: omg bingqiu prequel novel incoming!!
How To Redeem a Shen Jiu
A Guide By A Prolific Fanfic Reader
Option 1: Give him a transmigrator brother
Shen Jiu: Now that I've found my long lost brother I no longer need to abuse my students
Shen Yuan: You need better coping habits
Option 2: Give him a transmigrator disciple
Shen Jiu: I've never cared for a male disciple and I'm not going to start now
Disciple Shen Yuan: That's what you think old man, be prepared to get morals!
Option 3: Give him a transmigrator son
Shen Jiu: This weirdly intelligent baby has helped me see the error of my ways
Baby Shen Yuan: I'm too young to be doing this shit
Option 4: Have him be a transmigrator's son
Baby Shen Jiu: If I had better hand-eye coordination I would strangle you in your sleep
Shen Yuan: System, is it wrong to shake a baby?
Option 5: Have him take over Shen Yuan's dead body
Shen Jiu: So I get a loving family that's also rich without facing the consequences of my actions?
Ghost Shen Yuan: Hell naw, your walking my ass straight into therapy
Option 6: Have Yue Qingyuan confess
Yue Qingyuan: I came back for you
Shen Jiu, about to get his limbs torn off by Bing-ge: It would've been nice to be told this YEARS AGO!
Option 7: Have him get together with Liu Qingge
Liu Qingge: Let's have hate sex so you don't abuse your students
Shen Jiu: We definitely won't develop feelings because of this
Option 8: Kill him off and have Shen Yuan fix his problems
Shen Jiu: This is my favorite option
Shen Yuan: SPEAK FOR YOURSELF!!!
Au where did Yue Qingyuan manage to drag Xiao Jiu out of the Qiu residence, he managed to do it a few days earlier, and now they're both in the sect together, they're together, they're very slowly healing from the trauma. Yue Qingyuan is actually enjoying his path to becoming a the most powerful cultivator (it wasn't his goal but clearly he has potential) because he actually starts to enjoy learning when he doesn't have to rush so much and knows that his most important person is safe. Shen Jiu is not that involved in cultivation but he's satisfied. Plus, he's proud of Yue Qingyuan (he'll never say it out loud, but that's okay). He also sees Yue Qingyuan for the first time who is not in full survival mood experience (not only for himself but for everyone around him) because now he suddenly doesn't have to worry about everyone around him and sometimes he's just a teenager.
The only problem is that sometimes Shen Jiu still has to kick the ass of some disciple who was too close to his Qi-Ge. Because he's his boyfriend, and he's just as possessive as he was when they were kids If not more so. But that's okey. Sometimes he has to threaten some classist bastards too.(Because 100% that both of them didn't have it easy in this respect, especially when yqy became the head diciple of the sect. Yqy probably had to forcefully pull sj away from Everyone who had something against it tbh)His Qi Ge is not going anywhere anymore and they will stay together and safe.
...ans if Yue Qingyuan's shizun died on a mission a few days after Yue Qingyuan told Shen Jiu about the year in the caves and the sword thing? And if Shen Jiu was not seen by anyone on the same day and his one pair of robes was burned? Well..Nobody asked too many questions anyway
Did Shi Mei cook any of the dishes he brought Mo Ran? Like it’s a whole thing that he didn’t make the wontons and it’s foreshadowed by him bringing him a series of other dishes to cover it up, but… did he make those either?
I think it would be really funny if he was just going around passing off a different person’s cooking as his own every time he visited Mo Ran like a suburban mom tossing some store-bought dish into a casserole pan and calling it homemade to impress guests.
Oh Claudia, my poor, poor bab- (remembering all of her problems stem from the fact that she's constantly infantilized) grown ass adult woman
Hua Cheng getting the equivalent of a PhD every 7 years while looking for Xie Lian sounds fucking insane, because it’s been 800 years, but it also is very real.
Like he fr stress farmed all his stats because what do you mean he runs a city, knows how to make beautiful architecture, made thousands of statues, made a temple, learnt every weapon he has, made teleportation easier —something even the Gods haven’t figured out how to do, learnt multiple forms of magic, trained a butterfly army, unearthed an ancient civilisation and taught himself the language with no Rosetta stone to work with, figured out blackmail for literally every heavenly official ever, Learnt enough about everything to challenge 33 Gods in both combat and debate.
And that’s not even counting the stuff he sped ran, like making arguably the most powerful spiritual weapon in the series, and the stuff we aren’t explicitly told, like truly he must have only calligraphy left to learn because he for sure was close to running out of everything else.
#hua cheng#hualian#tgcf#tian guan ci fu#xie lian#heaven official's blessing#god imagine what he’s like if he ever gets bored#some people: HC has no interests outside of XL meanwhile HC is just side questing learning everything ever and mastering it#YY: if we don’t find his highness soon Chengzhu is gonna run outta things to do and invent space travel with a toothpick#give that ghost something to do please god#this is why we are all convinced he has a smut library for education because duh#notification filter
Erha spoilers
This is an interesting piece of characterization to me, but also, more importantly, this has got to be a big part of why shi mei hates him so much.
Imagine you can’t cry because your life literally depends on it and then there’s this dude you’re already jealous of because of his high aptitude for cultivation and the fact he keeps taking the only person you actually like’s attention away from you, and you have to hang out with him because you’ve backed yourself into a corner there, and he will not stop crying all over you. I too would be exploding him with my mind.
so this was months ago, but seeing your post re; system being 'bingzun' while looking through other posts about that particular plot point and
it's interesting to look through everyone's reactions to the change, because a few people claim outright that the new extra was written either so svsss is in compliance with recent chinese censorship laws, as subtle commentary to the recently edited + censored version of svsss, or some mixture of both.
... now, i WAS out of the loop about what 'recent' laws could be, but my curiosity has led me to learn that
china's government.......
kind of,,,,, banned the transmigration trope,,,,,,,,,,,
i don't know the specifics of this law, but apparently this is because a few stories that involved transmigration after death got popular and the government wanted to dissuade people from thinking death can do that. it apparently falls under anti-superstition laws as well, i still don't know the specifics (though i plan to after this). some people have gone as far as angrily commenting that it's just another way in which the chinese government is taking away fiction as an escape from reality. it's. not great
so the part of dodging censorship was literal. as in, the extra was literally written as hastily revised worldbuilding in the name of making sure it doesn't get banned off its hosting site
if i were to make guesses from the little i have been able to gather, the new extra helped dodge censorship by
1) making it so the characters 'wake up from a dream' (so no death and reincarnation)
2) turning the og fiction into a pre-existing element (so no 'fiction = reality')
saying this to you because you laid out the reasons why the system could be lying to save itself from luo binghe and was intrigued - and wanted to mention that someone else had drawn parallels between the system essentially claiming that shang qinghua did not create the og pidw to the transmigration trope ban situation
so with your suggestion that the system is straight up lying, we could theoretically surmise that:
1) the system's claims = the extra itself: it exists to keep the system/scum villain's self-saving system alive as a whole, even if the narrative has to get a little fudged to do it
2) i've seen people often associate the system with an oppressive force, or a dominant narrative in general ('the world must be this way, not that way). theoretically, the system's current claims that it did what it did for good reasons could be associated with the claim that creative censorship is 'good for the people', actually, even when it's over something arbitrary. even when the system's actions do the exact opposite of what it says it wants, or put characters in the exact wrong place to do it
3) sqh being somewhat diminished in his role as the writer (according to the system) = the fact that mxtx has to bow down to the censorship laws in the first place. i am given to understand she has had to do this multiple times and even got jail time for self-publishing her works (as 'financial fraud' .-.)
ultimately - this is an extra, and it does have interesting ideas nevertheless, but looking at it from this angle interests me because from what i hear, mxtx has been very purposeful with her messaging in her other works. especially in regards to public perceptions and word of mouth vs people's personal experiences vs the full reality. i can't help but muse on all this less because i think 'what the extra says is bad' and more because it's fun to look at things unded the lens that she could be trying to imply more than what was shown on the surface
the one bit of narration about adding an extra years after the story was finished is already a funny jab, but it's fun to wonder if anything else was intended as a funny jab, just more subtle. if you get what i mean
anyways, thank you for putting your own thoughts about bingzu out there :'>
When I wrote the initial post I had some context but not all of it and it is very interesting how she chose to do so.
And I think considering the constraints and what she's been through what she wrote is very interesting and compelling for many reasons. Especially for Scum Villian which has always been about the tensions between author, readers, the story, and the demands of outside forces (like needing to be able to eat or comply with laws so you dont end up in jail again)
And even with Bingzu the concept of that means that while Shang Qinghua's role in the story is lessened, the outside force is ultimately unable to force him to change what it wants him to.
It wants Xiang Fei to make a better story for Binghe. Xiang Fei is only able to make actual positive change for one character. The one he wrote for himself. The one he likes best. Even with all the pressure to bend to the will of others he carves out his own joy. Even if that own joy scares him and hurts him.
Could mean nothing though. Just putting that out there
The more I think about those new svsss extras, the more I hate them. They did irreparable damage to the fandom lowkey. I could only bring myself to read half of it because the characterization blatantly contradicted the original canon to the point that the only way I could imagine enjoying it is as a commentary on censorship rather than a continuation of the original story. And every additional piece of new lore i learned about those extras second hand is even worse. It’s like she took a grater to everyone’s personalities until they were actually the tropes she was originally making commentary on. But now people take into into consideration for their characterization when it’s clearly a part of an entirely different canon (the new censored version) that is not the version of the story that any of us in the English speaking fandom are interacting with outside of this one little piece that would destroy the depth of the version we did read.
