Black Names Matter We are taking racist names with us to our graves. We chant and march; we march and chant, demanding they take down 100-year-old statutes that represent 'America's Greatest Sin.' In the same breath, we hold fast to the very racist names of the actual slave owners from the very same racist, devilish 400-year-long era. We SAY we are descendents of a peoples from Afrikaan countries. Some of us claim to be direct descendents of American Indian tribes or Ab-Original Indigenous peoples tribes. But there's something to be said about our so-called connection to these Afrikaan and indigenous peoples: our NAMES DO NOT MATCH. We can go to Afrika and search the entire country for a slave name connected to a captured peoples. We're not gonna find it. The author Alex Haley CLAIMED to have found his roots. After all his searching, he died comfortably with a white man's name, leaving behind a white wife and children of a name tied to the racist legacy his book-turned-mini-series was supposedly against. What is it that makes our people desire the names of their oppressor? Why haven't we followed the a Nation Of Islam's raising of a new nation, with millions of followers who boldly took the step to rename themselves 'Muhammad?' They marry and name their children Muhammad. For centuries, these new names will be inscribed in the hearts and minds of their new nation, erasing the devilishness connection to Amerika's hellish past. The Black Panther Party had members who began their own tribes, using the name 'Shakur.' Malcolm X began using 'Shabazz', eventually marrying his wife and giving her and his children the Shabazz name. The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan's surname is a blessing to his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. With all the beauty of being Black, being the original peoples of earth, being the only people God created directly from his image and likeness, why are we wearing names that don't coincide with God's greatness? Why are we wearing these weak, watered-down, meaningless names of the hate-filled people who enslaved us? True Hiphop is a CULTURE I don't know what Kanye is trying to convey but I DO know, he's mixed up and makes pointless, baseless statements about Hiphop. For one, I can see he clearly doesn't know the difference between Hiphop and Rap. To quote the gea great KRS-One: "Rap is something you DO; Hiphop is how you LIVE." Kanye's people around him should have educated him one the FACT that this November, Hiphop Culture will be 45 years old. Yes, I said CULTURE. BEFORE we started rapping, deejaying, graffiti-ing, and break-dancing, we founded a CULTURE called Hiphop. Our culture was founded on four spiritual principles: Peace, Unity, Love, and Having Fun. By the time we incorporated the physical elements, we used them as tools to promote our beloved culture and its principles. Hiphop culture is full of people from all over the world who are Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Catholic, Jewish and the like. We have ALWAYS written songs that educated, enlightened, and entertained. Way before Kanye had this grand idea to jump on Joel Osteen's bandwagon, KRS-One did a song called "You Must Learn" breaking the Bible down with no shame in his game. Kanye should know this: 90% of the people buying his music are lost, white kids who have YET to know what the culture truly is. Whatever Kanye is saying is resonating with THEM, not US.
