Shake hands with the devil
Shake hands with the devil is a film based on a real event, the Rwandan genocide that happened in 1994 when the Hutus rebel army started to stack up on weapons and machetes earlier in February that year. Hutus were the extremest who were not satisfied with Tutsis controlling the country. was a Rwandan political figure. She served as Prime Minister of Rwanda from 18 July 1993 until her assassination on 7 April 1994, during the opening stages of the Rwandan genocide. She was Rwanda's first and so far only female prime minister. However, after the election of a Tutsi prime minister, Hutus had vanished to the north side of the country by the Tutsi government. After the Tutsi prime minister Agathe Uwilingiyimana's assassination, the Hutus rebel army started to move into Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. Belgian and US troops were already in Rwanda for the US and Belgian citizens. General Romeo Dallaire shows the rest of the story of the genocide from his point of view. Romeo Dallaire arrives at Kigali with one of his forces, which had 2500 of his peacekeepers, to keep the peace between Tutsis and Hutus.
This movie has been filmed in a perfect location and the director of the film (John-Roger Spottiswoode), found the ideal actors for the main characters based on the real people. These included (Romeo Dallaire) portrayed by (Roy Dupuis). The supporting characters include (Major Brent) represented by (James Gallander) as well as (Ghanaian general) characterized by (Owen Sejake). The actors were successful in delivering the spirit and the mood of the plot.
The director also uses a few useful narrative elements to display the theme and the atmosphere of this movie. He uses the Acting method mainly on the main character Dallaire, to show the characteristics of the United Nations and the situation they are in at the camps. The director also uses The movement element to show the genocide and all of the graphic scene's that the audience sees. This method shows the importance and the primary purpose of this film. Especially the scene that shows all the Hutus with machetes.
The audience age level of this movie is between mid 20 to 60-year olds. This film cannot be a film for teenagers or adults between 18 to 29 because of all the graphic scenes, and they wouldn't say this movie is one of my favourite movies that I watched. Still, the main reason is that the story cannot be enjoyable to watch for younger age groups. I enjoyed it and understood every aspect of this film and the setting of what is going on. The movie teaches audiences valuable lessons about Rwandese culture. One can learn the meaning of family values, bribes, tribalism and tribal acceptance. However, I enjoyed this movie a lot more than the other genocide films that I have watched in my life, but I was confused about the story because of a bad introduction in this movie. I also find it boring since it was a repetitive topic for me. Rate: 3/5.
