Lawsuit targets Voyager after Guardian investigation uncovered police partnership and company’s claims it could predict crime
A complaint filed on Thursday asks a judge to permanently ban Voyager Labs from accessing Meta’s sites and comes after a Guardian investigation revealed the company had partnered with the Los Angeles police department (LAPD) in 2019 and claimed that it could use social media information to predict who may commit a future crime.
Public records obtained by the Brennan Center for Justice, a non-profit organization, and shared with the Guardian in 2021, showed that Voyager’s services enabled police to surveil and investigate people by reconstructing their digital lives and making assumptions about their activity, including their network of friends. In one internal record, Voyager suggested that it considered using an Instagram name displaying Arab pride or tweeting about Islam to be signs of potential extremism.
[...]
The affected users included employees of non-profits, universities, media organizations, healthcare facilities, the US armed forces and local, state and federal government agencies, along with full-time parents, retirees and union members, Meta said in its filing. It is unclear who Voyager’s clients were at that time and what entities may have received the data. But Voyager, which has offices in the US, the United Kingdom, Israel, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates, designed its software to hide its presence from Meta and sold and licensed for profit the data it obtained, the suit says.
Minority Report (2002)
Minority report
Minority Report is a future based movie about a system that tries to avoid crime and bring down the criminal record to almost zero percent. The way this system works is precrime cops arrest the people who attempted crime and are going to commit a crime in the future and imprisoned them. However, John Anderton(Tom Cruise), the main character of this film, meets a lot of challenges to prove that the precrime system should not hold future criminals under arrest because they are still under arrest, and they did not commit any crime. Another plot of this film is the hater of precrime and a retired army general, Leopold Kaplan wanted to destroy the system, and John Anderton has to stop him. Kaplan also committed a crime and murdered Agatha's mother. Also, the system had a little bit of confusion due to the majority of reports and minority reports. Majority reports are the main reports precogs see for the first time and alerts the precrime cops. But, the minority reports are the report that only one of the precogs examines after the majority, and they almost look the same, so the workers think the future picture overlaps. Furthermore, John figures it out and tries to confront Kaplan.
The story is enthralling because of all the futuristic gadgets the society uses. One of the exciting features I saw in this movie is the commercials in shopping malls and streets. Also, the eye-scan entry in public transportation is another thing that shows the time of this movie and explains the environment well. In this movie, The director used a few film narrative elements to express the feeling and emotions of this dystopian movie. They mainly used colour. Colours have used to represent the feeling of the place and the scenes. It is very noticeable. Another critical element is movement. There are a lot of fighting scenes between precrime cops and criminals throughout the film. It shows a conflict between person versus person. And in my opinion, this element attracts a lot of action-movie fans by itself. However, the first essential element is the use of costumes. Precrime cops wear a special futuristic outfit when they are on duty. It shows the future based looks of the police to express the extraordinary power that they have. However, it is an ordinary power.
I wouldn't say I like this movie because of all the plot and the conflict that has been happening all at once, and Tom Cruise(The main character) did not do an excellent job in this film. The climax of the plot was too confusing for me to understand and I did not get the main message from the movie. It was not my type at all. The dystopian film is one of my favourite kinds of films, But this film did not even satisfy me in any way. This movie is for people between 18 to 30 years old. If you are watching a movie as a hobby or killing time, I would not recommend this movie because it just adds to your confusion. Rate: 1/5.
