single parents a.u. (or even group verse?) :: where mandy and a band of misfit single parents work together to raise their kids while also navigating the strange world of dating and domestic friendships. mostly because angie gives me strong modern mandy vibes.
my entire state has shut down but, being an essential healthcare worker who doesn’t have to figure out childcare for the next three weeks/indefinitely my work schedule is now double what it was a week ago.

DEEP DOWN, all mandy wants is to feel like she actually deserves to be loved. in every relationship she’s been in, she’s trying to prove to the other person that she deserves their love. every relationship - family, friend, romantic - has all been extremely conditional. except, for the most part, her relationship with ian. that’s probably why she’s so willing to step back and let mickey take the reigns of caring for him. she knows without a doubt that ian will still be there for her even if she isn’t bending over backwards to take care of him. this really is her first healthy relationship, where she begins to learn how unconditional love is supposed to be.
this ingrained understanding of conditional relationships, however, is also a lot of what drives her to behave the way she does. obsessive. violent. jealous. feeling as if her worth hinges on the other person’s belief that they NEED her simultaneously inflates her ego and deflates her self confidence. she is willing to stoop to any level to hold onto her relationships.

❛ there’s a nail salon on the other side of town. it’s out of my way but they do better work than anyone else i’ve tried. ❜ after multiple bad to mediocre experiences, delia was more than happy to pay the convenience fee and have nails that she both liked, and which didn’t chip or lift inside of one week. she could tell the other girl was not in a great mood, but being a stranger, she didn’t feel it was quite right to pry. besides, one way or another, alcohol could tend to make people talk ー even if she hadn’t come over for gossip.
delia ordered her favorite cocktail and shot a disinterested glance over her shoulder towards the door. ❛ you know what, mandy? i almost hope they do. my brother marc is a weight-lifter. one call to him and those assholes won’t be showing their faces again any time soon. ❜ and to her, it was as simple as that. her family took care of each other… even though delia had her own ways of dealing with problems. but those options tempted fate in a way she didn’t like, so she never painted when she was angry.

“ they look good. ” mandy nodded, filing that information away as another place she would probably never go to. the other side of town wasn’t as easy of a feat as it sounded. it wasn’t just getting there, it was fitting in, and she wasn’t sure it would ever be worth the headache. it was new enough just getting used to being able to have other people do her nails, she was willing to settle for anything that deviated from her history of black, chipped polish.
admiring the other girl’s casualness, mandy couldn’t help but feel more relaxed and more worried at the same time. she was all too familiar with the type of assholes around here, but delia’s brother wouldn’t be much protection because there was no way he could get there fast enough if things went south, no matter how much he could lift. still, she felt a pang of sadness at the mention of brothers, never imagining that she would actually miss hers as much as she did. “ is he an older brother ? ”
“ i have a nightstick and some spray in my bag. i’ll walk you to the station. ” she replied, letting that serve as her answer to the girl’s question without directly admitting the truth.

Like her, he was used to having people around, but he’d always preferred being on his own. The quiet was nice, the noise was intruding on his mind. But growing up where he had, with a little sister and plenty of kids in the neighbourhood, not to mention police sirens at all hours, it was impossible to avoid noise. He hadn’t thought about it as much as he could have, choosing not to linger too long on things he couldn’t control. Instead, he’d take long walks, hop on the L and head up town. Of course, seeing the shining faces of happy families on the other side of clean glass windows left him with a feeling of emptiness, but sometimes he couldn’t help himself. His imagination took control.
“Quiet,” he muttered, laughing inwardly. She wouldn’t understand why that answer was ironic. He offered a half smile, leaning back against the window sill with hunched shoulders. His usual pour display of posture. “Quid pro quo, I think it’s called. You’re obligated by social convention.” Tongue against his lower lip as his smile grew wry. “Never was a fan of small talk myself. You really want to know how it was pouring concrete all day?”
The living room felt bigger than it actually was, thanks to the big window where Jughead sat. The whole apartment itself was actually pretty small, but that was a bit of a blessing. Even a small apartment was difficulty to make homey for someone who had no sense of home or any belongings to fill it with.
The first thing Mandy had done after getting her own apartment was splurge on furniture. Nice furniture, but not a lot of it. There was a TV stand with a small television in the corner and a modest coffee table. The crowning jewel was the couch. It wasn’t huge, but it was deep and cushioned like a cloud. A place she could sink into and curl up after a long day of work, where she could pass the night comfortably if she didn’t have the will to make it to her - equally - nice bed. With the couch now Jughead’s domain, she felt a bit awkward sitting down onto it, but thankfully she was petite enough and the armrests were big enough that she could comfortably perch cross legged without invading the sheets and pillows.
“Sometimes I turn the television on to trash just so I can hear people swearing in the background.” Mandy confessed, wrinkling her nose at his teasing tone before firing back. “Do you really want to know how it was pouring coffee all day?”
zoey’s extraordinary playlist is my new obsession i can’t believe i am not able to binge it and have to watch it one. episode. a. week.

HE WOULDN’T really be surprised, that’s a crowd he seems to find himself in the company of a LOT, not that he was complaining. USUALLY people who didn’t give a shit about school DIDN’T constantly hound him to try and get ahead. HE WORKED hard and it was alarming how many people tried their best to FORCE that side of him out.

mandy RETORTED with a smirk. she would love for the world to see her has the kid that fucked off because she was too cool for school, intentionally oozing that attitude with an air of indifference following her as she went. it was possible, that if she bucked down, she could do just fine in school, but why risk it?

“They do! I told my mom that and she tried to blame it on my stomach being too big.” A slight raise in his voice, outrage at the insinuation from his mother that he could possibly have been wrong about something food related. No – Jughead knew the truth. The industry was starting to turn against him. As she turned, he started to slouch backwards, planting a hand behind him to lean his weight against. He was entirely unbothered by the legs draped over him. Had it been anyone else, that wouldn’t have been so accepted by him. “Only if it can be linked back to you, to be fair.”
“ in her defense, that could be believable. i’ve seen my brothers eat. it isn’t a pretty sight. ” mandy’s mind flashed to evenings where bags of cheap greasy food were thrown onto the nearest flat surface, igniting a feeding frenzy between her brothers. being the youngest, the only girl, and the most capable of schmoozing food outside of the house meant that she usually waited to pick through whatever was left. if there was anything. “ nothing stays a secret around here. ” she chastised with a veiled tone of defeat. his idea was well-meaning but unrealistic to pull off. “ speaking of eating. now i’m hungry. ”

Beck wasn’t MUCH of a people watcher . But on some days , when he came out to the coffee shop && perched himself ever so carefully in the corner —————— found himself BLEARY eyed looking out of the window at the world as it passed by everyone on the inside .
He almost MISSED the incident outside as he stirred his coffee, but wide eyed caught the last few moments of the attempted theft . He’s ABOUT to jump to his feet && try to help but only makes it halfway out of his seat before he sees the victim of the failed robbery making her way toward && THROUGH the door into the shop.
It’s suddenly obvious that she works here —————— YES . He’s seen her here a couple of times. He watches her move across the room , obviously flustered && then gets to his feet properly this time . Making his way over toward the counter && HER ; his gaze softens , hands coming out to touch the counter top as if to hold himself up . “ Hey , ya’right? “ he’s trying his hardest not to seem PATRONISING , but he simply couldn’t have not checked on her . “ That would have shaken me up , “
punching in quickly, she just BARELY managed to not be late to her shift. she was already in a foul mood, the last thing she needed was to be chewed out by her supervisor when she was so close to a promotion. not that she wasn’t getting by — the extra money would just be really, really nice ( && it had nothing to do with the fact that she just still managed to despise authority. in ANY capacity ).
her wise coworkers had seen what happened && understood enough to know that mandy had it handled. she had kicked enough unruly customers out often of the establishment for them to know just how much shit the southside girl was able to take. other than a simple PAT on the back && a sympathetic glance or two, none of the workers acknowledged the incident.
as she buckles down at the counter, she’s surprised to see a patron approach, one she vaguely recognizes. her version of dealing with events && his were ( apparently ) not the same. “ can i get you another coffee ? ” dodging his question with a feigned smile. it was the easiest way to avoid revealing just how shaken she actually was.
it wasn’t the near mugging that bothered her, it had just been far too long since she had EXPOSED that part of herself. her hands betray her as she pours herself a cup of the hot, dark liquid, the unusually heavy pot swaying slightly as she barely manages not to OVERFLOW the paper cup. her jaw clenches in embarrassment.

after a crazy week and a half ( including an impulsive trip down to disney world to see galaxy’s edge ), i am back and working on drafts . . . yay !!
jughead asked :“ you’ve made your decision then? ” || @joneshead
teeth gritted tightly, she continued to throw miscellaneous belongings onto the bed. most items missed the suitcase, falling haphazardly across the pillows until it seemed that everything was piled into the center of the room. sifting through the mess, she began to pull things out and shove them into the bag. nothing held real value anything. if it didn’t fit, she was probably better off without it. just like she was better off without anything here.
her thin arms worked anxiously to hurry, sleeves slipping up to reveal a series of bruises in varying shades of healing. yellows. blues. purples. a whole watercolor of preventable mistakes. yet, here she was, following that vary mistake in an attempt to escape a far greater emotional pain. she couldn’t live in this fucking city anymore. not with her ex lurking in every corner, throwing his new life in her face almost as easily as he had thrown her to the curb. so yes, she had made her decision. the decision to be loyal to the one man who hadn’t turned his back on her yet and still wanted her around. even if they did fight constantly and especially if it gave her a ticket out of chicago. what choice did she have at this point ?
“ you here to change my mind or help me pack ? ”
she dodged his question with one of her own. not really willing to get into the finer details of why she had ended up at this conclusion. jughead didn’t need to know what happened the other night. it was better off if the world just lived under the illusion that she didn’t have a heart capable of breaking.
it was time to try to zip things up. the mess on the bed had now miraculously managed to transition into the suitcase. she folded the tattered case on itself and climbed up onto the bed so she could sit on it. barely weighing more than the suitcase she was packing, she struggled to manage the zipper closed. still not quite sure why she was in such a hurry, she fought back tears as she struggled with her things. she paused with a heavy sigh as she took a moment to regroup. eyes finally avoiding jughead’s face to get a read on his expression.
