Operation Market Garden - The Netherlands - Sept 1944
One of the largest airborne invasions in history, it was comprised of several allied nations, most notably the United Kingdom, USA, Poland, and Canada. Several divisions of airborne infantry were involved coming from gliders and parachute.
The British 1st airborne division was tasked with taking and holding a key bridge in Arnhem. Of the 10,000 men in the division, only an advanced party of about 800 men made it to the bridge head where they held their position for several days throughout numerous German counter attacks. The rest of the division was pinned down several miles away. When it was realized that their motorized reinforcements would not be arriving and ammunition ran out, the British units gallantly defended their pockets with bayonet charges and weapons salvaged from the German dead. The 1st airborne division was virtually destroyed at Arnhem, only about 2,000 of the original 10,00 made it back to allied lines.
