Assessment 3: PDF FINAL
Assessment 3: documentation
My group has been largely communicating via photoshop; showing the group what we’ve done and getting critique/comments via the page. This was done on a smaller scale: Lily and Mish imagining the world and Mish drawing the map, me colouring.
Lots of back-and-forthing to make sure that the end result was something we were all satisfied with.
Assessment 3: final three pages + reflection
I kept my pages fairly simple, because my group members’ pages were also fairly simple (they were limited by not having photoshop). Futura was used to match with Jennifer and the title page (Mish hand-wrote hers, Lily used a slightly different font I think.)
I had a lot of trouble doing type layouts because I hadn’t pre-planned the pages before I drew the illustrations -- this really limited what I could do! In the future, I should really plan out the type+illustration before I draw anything!
(A terrifying vision of what could have been.)
It was also harder to decide how to lay things out after seeing my group member’s works, because even though we’re all designing for distinct different environments, the feel of each page is really fairly different: I guess the result is something more similar to cheap magazines scattered with different stories rather than a more closely monitored/edited high-end magazine.
I also gave my pages more of an advertising feel (in terms of text) after seeing the other’s pages, previously I’d envisioned giving a detailed explanation of the context and stuff haha, which would have been fairly jarring to read.
In terms of design and the actual illustration, I’m fairly happy with the results. They all have slightly different styles (I got a bit more brave with the thickness of the outlines), but I feel like I did my best and expressed what I wanted to express.
Also, ‘dao cao’ doesn’t actually exist, I put that in to link to the model on Jen’s pages.
Assessment 3: documentation
Illustrations for my pages -- two of the pages will simply show the illustration; the middle page will be accompanied by text explaining the context/concept of my designs.

Assessment 3: documentation
Some headwear designs for a hot climate. Because I was inspired by the ‘07 ss Jean Paul Gaultier collection, I tried to imagine a kind of religion/culture for the people (also because in our group planning sesh we’d kind of dreamed up a crazy world, and this is just a potential part of it.)
These people are fairly long and tall, and have dark skin, because this is better for the climate they’re in. They shave their heads because it’s more efficient and convenient than wasting water washing it, and because it’s cooler. Occasionally they will leave a clump of hair to grow, and they will add this to their clothing.
They understand the power of the sun, and are eternally hopeful for clouds: much of their clothing is made of light, bright material, and their eye/brow makeup mimics the clouds they want to shade their eyes.
Assessment 3: documentation Honestly I like the sketch a lot more -- maybe I should change it to obscure the eyes again?

!???!?? I hadn’t actually seen this before but the concept/feel is similar!??!??

This collection was a huge inspiration to me in terms of the feeling of lightness I wanted to express.

I really love Rene Gruau’s style of fashion illustration, however, I think it would be a bit jarring in our PDF.
