My thought of the day, in the competitive landscape faced by even the most successful of firms, its not enough to simply have an efficient value chain that delivers a product in both a cheap and timely fashion. Consumers do not work in chains, they gather experiences use services and products via a network of firms. In order to service the consumer properly there should be a switch from a value chain perspective to the creation of value creating networks to increase the mutual value proposition for both enterprises and consumers.
A bank for example could create linkages with insurance firms and retailers to give the customer a single unified experience. Someone wants to buy a house, they need to get a loan, they also need insurance and white goods for the house. Transactional models can be made for moving a customer on along the value network while making the consumers life both easier and more efficient
