Better late than never?
Well, the concrete gate arrived last week, stored in my garage for now.
It would have been enjoying the sunshine in the art in the garden exhibition if it has only arrived two weeks earlier. Ah well, next year perhaps? Iâll look at other art in the garden type exhibitions
It might look something like this.
Sigils
A while ago I learned how to make symbols, sigils from words and phrases. Itâs something i like to doodle, and sometimes work with in a spiritual way that Iâve not really put into my art practice before. I used the technique at my work place to make a symbol making worksheet, riffing off of âhobo symbolsâ. But somehow felt embarrassed to make them into âserious artâ.
But what is âserious artâ? We say it all the time as artists, making art should be playful, always. I say it all the tome too, but am i following it? I think recently i am. Finally giving myself permission to be more playful, more truthful? More exploratory, stopped boxing myself in.

Because thatâs what artists do i guess? The launch of Roadmap was a lovely event, I ducked out a little early, mostly because i had no lights on my bike, partly because iâm a homebody and donât really like big eventsâŚ
We had a great time chatting to other artists, hanging out and rearranged the collection a few times.
I came back for the community event the next day, partly (mostly) for the food! Zest closed the road for the day, which should happen more often! It allowed children to play, and adults too, workshops engaging the community with spaces were had, it was a truly wholesome afternoon. I might try to do something smaller in my own street to claim it back too.

âCollectablesâ by Will Woods and Amy Scott-Pillow
The final outcome of our âZing Zingâ mutual mentorship! All glazed, and a âDad madeâ tray and backdrop of the shelves. Visitors will be invited to re decorate the shelves and move around the collectables. This will be part of the Zest Roadmap exhibition opening on the 23rd May at the Alfred Arcade.
âA playful take on the desire to collect, form and arrange kindred things. Objects were made in conversation between the artists, size and shapes dismissed and accepted through quick making. The selection process found objects in the clay, forms between kitsch Cornish houses and pebbles on the beach, between made and found. The quickly formed âCollectablesâ are infinitely rearranged on a shelf, made from the same material, but slowly and methodically. Deformed by the firing process, whereas the collectables kept their forms more truthfully.â
Things donât always go to plan
Thats okay, there are some things i could have done better, i.e started the shipping process earlier. It has meant that iâve sadly had to pull out of the little forest land art exhibition. Lessons learned and disappointment all round, however itâs not the end of the world, itâs just /art/
Photo is from the factory in the netherlands that made the design a reality, itâs on its way to me now. And when it arrives it will be the first time i actually get to touch it!! Thatâs kind of wild ! Art is made and designed by me, and is mine, but it was made by a machine and only the engineers and factory workers got to handle it. It begs the question of ownership, who made it? Me? Jon the engineer that programmed the robot arm? 3DWeber, the company that Jon works for? The robot? Rich who helped finalise and tweek the design?
I drew it, i learned from rich the perimeters of the machine, Jon âhit printâ and verified itâs viability. The machine did the work of moving concrete into position, the company helped pack it, the shipping company have it now! En route to London first!
Is it a collective artwork? By 3dweber, Jon, Rich, Zeigler? And me?
In April,
i was able to visit 3Dweber, a Dutch concrete company that specialises in 3D printing with concrete. With help from Rich Holland, skatepark designer and architect I was able to worth with the company to produce my own designs in this material. It was a steep learning curve, but that is the point of a DYCP grant no? New skills, new materials new ideas formed and the confidence to do something of this scale again I hope!
Today, the sculpture should be in transit, and en route to Little Forest Land art in North Boarhunt, near Fareham, Hampshire, UK where it will be exhibited as part of their annual open call, art in the garden. Fingers and toes crossed that it all arrives safely!
Shelves on a wall
For the sake of practicality, the collaborative work âcollectablesâ Ive made with Will Woods have to go on some kind of back plate. Of course this caused further discussion. âLooks like an abandoned bedroom wallâ we dont want that, but we kind of do? It canât actually be an abandoned bedroom wall, but it needs to evoke the domestic. Anxiety of material dropping and smashing, they cant jauntily hang over each-other, though instinct says they should, they must spread out. Formalise themselves as studies. But not too much. Still finding the balance of made and found, found to be made, and yet made to be found?
The wood is found; the angles and shapes from another person, two sides found two sides cut perfect right angles.
Practical material understanding meets conceptual theoretical understanding. Amy and Will, itâs us in a nutshell?

Netherlands
Currently in the Netherlands preparing to print one of my gate designs in concrete. Emails and redesigns have been sent and approved. A day spent with Rich, learning lots and appreciating great food.
26 March
âLaunchâ event, beermats delivered, 12 were framed and put on the walls. Josh and I were interviewed briefly about the project and the mats are now in situ, getting beer soaked, dog earred, creased and flipped.
Hopefully, also read and if lucky slipped into a pocket for collectionâŚ.
