Staring pensively out the window - current 2020 vibes
If y'all could, like I don't know, pray for me or wish for me or hope for me to get this pre-doctoral position at my uni with the research team and subject of my dreams that will kickstart my career of researching how to implement PA in mental health care as an affordable, reliable, universal, and long-term effective treatment option, that'd be aces and I wouldn't know how to thank you enough.

Psych: Last Night Gus
You look like a couple of asshats in those ridiculous costumes.
[Photo: Nathan Howard, Getty Images - a terrified blonde woman with a mask on and goggles pushed up onto her head, wearing a grey hoodie and a backpack, is dragged away from the viewer by a supposed federal officer with no identification, wearing a gas mask and fatigues. He appears to be a white man, from what little of his face can be seen. Taken July 23, 2020 in Portland, Oregon.]
“I am not sure what the answers are,” my mother who lives in another state said. “The specific incident is disturbing.”
Seven days ago I sent a plea out to my family. I don’t usually talk about politics with those of the family that I still talk to, because I’m a radical leftist and most of my family is, shall we say, very much not. “Please,” I said. “Call your congresspeople. Call your representatives at every level of government. You don’t want this where you live.”
(It won’t happen where my parents live – or, I guess, they think so, because they live in the woods. Not in a city. Not in Portland. Not in Philadelphia. There won’t be men without name tapes, without identification, snatching terrified people off the street and dragging them away where my mom and dad live.)
The response from my mother was: I don’t know what the answer is. You can avoid that part of town until it’s safe again.
(One of my partners and myself are both medically barred from protests. It fucking sucks. We’re physical liabilities to other protesters, so we support from the sidelines. Send money to Riot Ribs. Watch streams. Pass on information.)
I asked my family to pay attention. I asked my family to do something, because in my city, Proud Boys could buy an outfit that looks like this on Amazon, rent a car from Enterprise, and start kidnapping people. Heck, not even Proud Boys, just some random jackass who wants to hurt people. Some random dude who wants to hurt women. Some transphobe who wants to drag trans women off and kill them.
Our city is not under siege by protesters. The protesters live here. We are under siege by federal forces sent in by a man who desperately wants to look like he’s in control, over the objections of our governor and our mayor. The protesters are not the ones causing fear. They’re not the ones making the woman in this picture look back in abject fucking terror.
I get up in the morning in Portland. I run my business in Portland. I make dinner for my family in Portland. Businesses are – as everywhere – dealing with COVID, and there are closures based on the global pandemic, but we are not closed down due to protesters. Protesters have no desire to close down the city.
They fucking LIVE HERE. If the city stops working, they can’t get from place to place on TriMet or buy food for themselves. It’s not like when Proud Boys roll into town and cause shit and fuck off again. The protesters are not protesting to destroy the city; they’re protesting because they want the place they live to be better.
Instead, we have unidentified (supposed, because we can’t tell for sure since they’re not properly identified in any way) federal officers wearing the same gear that civilians LARPing as federal officers could buy, grabbing terrified people off the streets and throwing them into unmarked vans. One of the repeated stories that comes from protesters is that they are not Mirandized, and they are not, most of them, charged with anything. They’re just grabbed, shoved in enclosed spaces with other protesters, where they cannot keep any kind of distance from each other, and driven somewhere – they don’t know, and they’re not told – where they’re often asked to sign forms that aren’t explained, and then eventually released without charges or explanations.
This is not any sort of legitimate peacekeeping or law enforcement tactic. This is a terror tactic. This is not meant to deescalate or calm. This is meant to horrify, to terrify, to traumatize the citizens of Portland, Oregon, and the rest of the United States watching from home.
You just have to look at her face to know that.

Dude, yeah. Wheeler took tear gas to the face, too. The mayor is definitely not in support of the invasion of the fucking feds. It’s been bloody insane. My friends who live downtown are afraid to leave their homes. Nobody wants to go downtown unless it’s specifically to protest. I’m so afraid to look at the news one day to find one of my friends or colleagues has been hurt, kidnapped, killed.
Wheeler took tear gas to the face for long enough for a photo op and then was rushed away. I’m sorry to be cynical (I’m not sorry) but I think that was a jaded and specific attempt to win back public opinion in a city that has started to call him #TearGasTed.
the pride and prejudice musical we deserve:
darcy doesn’t sing a single note even during conversations where everyone else is singing at him that is until the argument following his first attempt at proposing to lizzy where you can see his restraint fall away
his first big solo is the letter he writes her
gelsey bell is mary and the unofficial narrator and she sits down at her piano to describe whats going on but before she can ever reveal her feelings on the matter, starting with that gelsey bell scream, mr bennet comes over and does the whole ‘that’s nice dear but give someone else a turn’
mr wickham has this huge ballad about how darcy ruined his life and its super melodramatic and touching
mr collins proposal to lizzy is an absolute bop that he gets so into he forgets for a moment what he’s doing he’s just owning the stage
wickham has a song where he’s trying to seduce lydia but she’s not even listening she’s just monologuing about how excited she is to get laid
during darcy’s second proposal he keeps hesitating waiting for lizzy to interrupt him like she has done every time before but she doesn’t say anything until he’s finished
at the end mary sits down at the piano and right where she’d usually be interrupted, kitty joins her and harmonises
jane and bingley have the adorable upbeat romantic duet which is just them being super polite like ‘oh so nice to have you here’ ‘so nice to be here’ interspersed with their inner monologue which is just them being like fucking jesus I’m so in love
the bingley sisters probably have a really cool mean solo
lady catherine has this terrifying disney villain song in the garden
there’s for sure a song about ribbon shopping
@angelatwell
the appeal of pride and prejudice isn’t “mysterious brooding gentleman sweeps average smart girl off her feet”. It’s “hot rich man argues with woman for months, eventually tells her she was right” like winning arguments against hot people is the greatest victory

okay but this is a power move above any other
It gets even better, because he was doing all of this on a pitch black night. This dude swam towards a lure, slapped at it with his glove, and when it got caught; he let himself float and tugged on the line so the fisherman thought he had hooked a 100+ pound salmon. Once he was finally up to the shore, he turned a flashlight on in the guy’s face and walked out of the water, saying “good morning, gentlemen. State fish and game warden, you’re under arrest.“
At this point, the guy who had reeled him in had literally fallen over in shock, and the other people with him were scared shitless. The warden whipped some citations out of a plastic bag in his wetsuit, made the trespassers sign them, asked if they had any questions, and then gathered all of their fishing gear. And he just. Walked back into the river. And quietly swam away, without another word.
This man is a legend.

My friend asked how I learned to cook and the answer is I didn't. I know like 5 things about cooking and they are:
Always use more garlic than the recipe calls for
"Ehhh fuck it close enough" is a great measurement tool
Find like 5 recipes that you like, adjust them how you like them, make them until you hate them
Clean as you go
If a recipe is from a mommy blog, you will need more spices
If anyone wants to add, please do
None of these are wrong.

So we can all agree that Harry Potter should’ve been a professor at Hogwarts and not a magical police officer
shit i’ve heard chemistry majors say
- *student in a lab coat, cutting in the cafeteria line* YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND I DON’T HAVE A LOT OF TIME MY EXPERIMENT IS GOING TO CATCH FIREEEE
- *loud pop* student, in very calm voice: well that was painful
- lab assistant, seeing me frantically pulling on gloves: oh no. what did you do now
- professor: come on guys, don’t hate on social sciences majors… it’s not their fault they were born this way
- so i was grading your tests last night. i wanted to kill someone.
- you have five minutes until the end of class to finish the test. but i want to go outside for a smoke, so three
- *section of lab report titled “applications of compound”* i heard that a drug cartel used it to dissolve bodies, should i list that?
- “i’m synthesizing this compound in my next lab class, what kind of stuff effects the success rate and yield?” “dunno man, it depends on your karma”
- based on my recent lab assignments, i have come to the conclusion that the professor wants me dead
- dude, Fehling’s solution contains glucose, what if it tastes like lemonade? *proceeds to dip finger in and lick it* well that was a disappointment. the potassium hydroxide makes it kinda bitter.
- professor: you’ll understand this concept in your fifth year student: sir, this is a four-year program professor: oh, then never
