#5Tracks goes monthly and this time it's inspired by MODERN CLASSICAL.
1. Julianna Barwick - Call | Pacing
Julianna's latest 7" release Pacing features two new tracks, pacing and call. Call is a simple piano song that oozes emotion with it's deep melodies. An ideal start of our 5 track selection.
2. Phillip Glass - Echorus | Spheres by Daniel Hope
Before we start, forget the trite cover of this album and focus on the logo of Deutsche Grammophon.
Daniel Hope is a violinist who recently became widely recognized due a collaboration with Max Richter on the recomposition of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. Spheres is Hope's reinterpretations collection of pioneering modern and classical composers's works.
3. Julia Kent - Transportation | Character
Julia Kent will soon be considered one fo the musical revelations of the year among the highbrow blogosphere's society. A cellist who is not afraid of experimentations to reveal her inner Character on her third album. Transportation sounds like the most divulging track of the record in all its complexity.
**You can also listen to a different version of Transportation delivered by the enigmatic duo Roll The Dice, here.
4. Jace Clayton - Evil Nigger | The Julius Eastman Memory Depot
Now that's pretty tough to explain. Jace Clayton is the real name of DJ /rupture who wanted to pay homage to a gay, African American, classical composer of the 60's named Julies Eastman. Clayton with his laptop alongside two pianists David Friend and Emily Manzo recreate two of Eastman's most provocative pieces Evil Nigger and Gay Guerrilla.
5. Ólafur Arnalds - This Place Was A Shelter | For Now I'm Winter
The comeback of one of my favorite young, modern classical musicians, Ólafur Arnalds. To our surprise his latest record For Now I'm Winter has not been released through his previous Berlin based label Erased Tapes, but from Mercury Classics!
The second biggest and most notable surprise is the presence of the vocalist Arnór Dan Arnársson (Agent Fresco) in comparison to all his previous works. *Extra hint is that the orchestra is co-arranged by Nico Muhly. Probably one of the best albums of the year so far.
