the first time they go grocery shopping in the alps, bea makes a list. she follows that list to a tee, but ava begs begs begs for just a little treat, or two, or three. bea sends her a fond disapproving look, but begrudgingly acquiesces.

the next week, ava does the same, but bea only lets her get two things instead of three.

the week after, bea leaves the list on the kitchen counter while she's out on a run and ava sneaks a few items onto the list, carefully trying to replicate bea's neat script despite her developing fine motor skills.

of course, bea notices the slight shake of milk duds and smarties amongst the steadier broccoli and spinach, but she just smiles to herself when ava's eyes light up as she adds the boxes of candy to the basket.

lilith, who pops in from time to time when they're not looking, also catches on and adds her own additions, leaving bea desperately searching for chayote and slightly green blueberries in their tiny swiss village, cackling from behind a stall as she watches bea frantically potter around and ava follow in confusion.
