I don't think I've ever seen this talked about before (I'm sure it has been) but there was a huge wave of people about 10 years ago that would harrass gay-identifying trans men for publicly shipping MLM ships that I still see having long-standing impacts in fandom culture. The main line I remember being fed was that most "gay trans men" were essentially just cultural tourists that would eventually detransition, that were so into the fetishization of gay men and queer lifestyles that they felt the need to insert themselves into MLM spaces. This was around the height of the whole tucute v transcum discourse as well. There are also some outwardly sourced issues at play here, as I know this is also a problem in cis gay man dominated spaces (source: my and my friends' lived experiences).

I personally see the fear of being seen as this "type of trans masc" still causing ripple effects in contemporary fandom culture, and this is something I also personally struggle with. Oftentimes I will not engage with talking about ships or sexuality in general unless it's through an online alias (hello!) or with a trusted partner or friend.
