Why I Put Myself In The Poor Men Situation
The situation of rural poor in our city is becoming direr by the day, for many of them. Poverty is not just about giving money but helping the poor realize their real worth. That is one of my goals: to help poor men, women, and children, gain real dignity and respect in their lives. Being involved in charities in and around Bihar, I have come to learn that the plight of the poor is much worse in our state, compared to what it was ten years ago. In fact, several rich people I know, came from wealthy families, but now are supporting the poor and needy on the streets - in an unprecedented move, I might add!
Over 70% of working poor stay unemployed as they cannot afford to drive to their job. No jobs available means the poor have very little income to spend and they spend much of their income on food, utilities, and housing, leaving them with little left for spending on entertainment. My Goal Goal: to raise Rs. 1 lakh via crowd-funding and feed 100 poor for a month. I have already collected Rs. 15000 in the first 48 hours. It is my single thought.
I started to question the usual definition of self-control, which is to prefer long-term outcomes to short-term ones, which makes sense for people with little time and money. When I started working on it, I was surprised at the reason why it is so hard for people in poverty to become good at it. Self-regulation is an achievement that requires poor people to overcome a number of structural barriers and obstacles. At the heart of the disbelieving statements about the bad decisions poor people make is the belief that we will never be poor people. Research supports this idea and shows that poor people are more focused on the present. Commentators repeat the claim that people, especially poor people, have poor self-control and make short-sighted decisions.
The result of this phenomenon, some say, is that poor people tend to do better than others. In other words, other poor people are poor because they make bad decisions and are poor in an unfair system.
The implicit assumption, in this case, is that unjust income inequality between the rich is why the poor are poor, or at least cannot escape poverty. This bias in the nature of inequality does not, of course, only affect poor people. It is not true that increasing the incomes of high-income workers makes people poorer, which prevents them from improving their economic status.
Rich and successful people are big in their problems, while poor and unsuccessful people are small in their problems. Poor people avoid anything that looks like it's a problem. The way you catch yourself thinking about poor people is to switch to what rich people think. The thinking of rich peoples is very different from that of the poor and middle classes. The idea that the poor are poor because they are poor focuses on the poor themselves, and it keeps people on the surface, and that is an expression of the problem, not its essence.
And therein lies one of the biggest differences between rich and poor people. People who live in poor circumstances do not have to do what you think
The poor are often people of color, region, and immigrants. In reality, the cost of living varies depending on the geographical location, so people who are considered poor in Mumbai may not feel poor living in Kerela, Bihar. The poor people I met were among the 40 million people living in poverty: people born in poverty, forced into circumstances beyond their control, such as physical or mental disabilities, divorce, family breakdown, illness, old age, unimprovable wages, discrimination on the labor market, etc.
Since the industrial era, there has been more than a one-to-one relationship between poor people and unemployment. Poor people put all their eggs in one basket, depending on an income stream. The cycle of overspending has left many Americans so poor that they are considered below the poverty line because of their income.
I see how people who are poor get the message that it is your own fault if you are not working. As I mentioned on Twitter, poor people have more presentable and affordable options than Vmart. We must break the idea that the poor are poor because they deserve it, or because they are lazy or stupid, ideas that permeate people's consciousness and only work if people understand the structure of the problem and we understand how it works and what the solution is.
It is internalized by many poor people who refuse to claim the social benefits to which they are entitled and who fight against all odds to survive. In some cases, this seems likely, because political elites have a strong vested interest in keeping people in poverty.
When dealing with poor people, it is impossible to address the fact that they are poor. Poor people come in different economic strata. You can’t fix one and neglect the other. As a first step, poor people, in general, may want to feel that they are people just like everyone else. They are right to feel that way. No amount of money would let them enjoy all the advantages of being a person who is not poor. So, there is no point in trying to convince them that they are not poor because they don’t believe that they are. Also, the challenge is a monumental one. They are angry and aggressive and confrontational and they live in a very negative world. They are prone to all sorts of unsavory practices and stories are common.
