My Two Cents

The Legend of the Three Caballeros is not the show I would have asked for. There’s a lot that really annoys me with the plot (in what world does the original Three Caballeros translate into a Chosen Ones Adventure series???). The villains really just dont do it for me either (Leopold deserves better 2018), and Daisy isn’t there for any good reason but to distract Donald. I want to like Xandra, but I'm not sure about her yet. It could have reflected more on Brazil and Mexico, in the spirit of the movie (or, like, any of the places they travelled? What does Stonehenge have to do with goblins? And Mt. Fuji was on screen for two seconds in the episode named after it), and there’s a lack of music and dancing that distresses me greatly.

(I can tell you all about the show I *would* have asked for, but that’s not what this post is about)

But.

I love it so much!

Honestly, just anything that gives my boys more screentime together is all I ever could have wanted-especially Panchito. Their characters in the original were fun, but José and Panchito were woefully undeveloped, and this was a great chance to round them out a bit more. I love their squabbling and silliness and the hugs! It made me laugh and squeal at how cute they could be together sometimes (not even in a shippy way. The scene at the end of Stonehenge Your Bets was all about how José and Panchito are completely aware of Donald’s faults as a friend and they love him anyway and I just melted).

The Cabana Crew, Ari, April, May, and June, were similarly fantastic. Ari got a chance to make his chaotic gags into a functional character trait, while the girls are my snarky, future Librarian children. I also enjoyed Xandra and Bear Rug, but I havent decided my final opinions on them yet.

I really hope it gets another season so that we can see more, or at least that it inspires people to put them in more content with speaking roles!

So I’ve been working out on and off for years now. Nothing too intense because of trouble breathing, but still, some form of cardio and strength training on different days. I’ve really never thought it was anything to be proud of. But you know what? A few days ago, friends invited me to go to a class with them and were hoping I would die after my first class, like they did. The day after and today, eh. My calves kinda hurt. My arms don’t want to be raised for too long. The worst i felt in class was when my athsma triggered. Otherwise, I’m fine. Feeling very smug and a little proud about it.

Jeez i feel guilty. Spent half the day at work reading fanfic bc i was stuck on a problem and was avoiding it. Which i mean, is fine normally, i’m not counting it towards my hours or anything, and the problem i was working isnt due for a few more weeks. But i intermittently stopped to fix tiny errors or validate something i’d forgotten about and fixing whatever was wrong with that, so it looked like i was working harder than i was. And towards the end of the day, when I saw the other guys still had work on their plates, I asked if i could help with anything and they told me not to worry about it because they didnt want me burning out. Shit man…

And i know it's not all on me. I've been waiting on one of them to post his code for a week so I could do some of the work and take the pressure off, but he still hasnt. And the other guy and i actually split a set of defects this morning and he added work for himself by worrying about defects we've already told him to forget about... But still. It feels like im not pulling my weight...

the-reylo-void presents: “Things I Wish I’d Understood as an Anti”

So as most of you know, I have a more personal connection to anti-shipping than most: for about two years, I was arguably the nastiest and most vicious anti in my fandom, so much so that I gained a certain level of infamy for it. 

Starting to ship Reylo was a wakeup call the likes of which I’d never encountered before — not only did it cause me to examine my own past behavior and confront the extremely difficult revelation that I’d been the villain all along, but it also made me think about anti-shipping as a whole, and the things I wish I had understood when  I was knee-deep in that mindset. 

Things like:

1. People’s enjoyment of things that hurt you is not blithe mockery of your pain. It is not a personal slight. You are allowed to be hurt by something. You are not allowed to belittle, degrade, and shame others for interacting with it. You are not that important, and your pain is not a weapon. 

2. The moment you commit yourself to a movement devoted to hatred, you have ceded the moral high ground. You have gone to the Dark Side. You are not fighting the good fight. You are an emotional terrorist actively attempting to break people down for disagreeing with you. 

3. You also cede the right to be a victim. No one deserves to be suicide baited or doxxed, and neither do you. However, by aligning yourself with hatred, by actively harming others and laughing about it, you forfeit your right to be upset and morally outraged when you receive hate, when others comment in disagreement with your posts, when you are cast as a villain. You are not being bullied. You are receiving back just a taste of the pain you have caused others. 

4. You. Are. Miserable. You really are. Happy, fulfilled people don’t marinate themselves in hatred. They don’t drink acid and spit it at others. You’re so desperate to avoid looking at yourself and so afraid of what you’ll see there that you’re directing all of that hatred outwards. You found a group of people who like something that makes you angry, and it’s so easy to attack them, to hurt them because you’ve convinced yourself that they’re “bad” somehow and they deserve it. But it’s not about them. It’s about you. It’s about all those dark things you hear at night. It’s the fear that you’re worthless. And it’s the high you get, the ego boost every time someone cheers you on for attacking the “bad” shippers. It’s the feeling that you’re so smart, you’re so popular, you’re so loved and you’re so, so right for everything you’re doing.

But those people aren’t there for you at night. They won’t be there when your world falls apart. All that’s left is you, and your misery, and the desperate need to make someone else hurt for it because you can’t handle it. 

5. And most importantly: you’re wrong. You are wrong. Your thought process is wrong. Your behavior is wrong. Everything that you are doing as you torture and harm others and convince yourself that you’re morally justified IS. WRONG. 

One day you’re going to realize that, and you’ll choke on it. 

And if you did that a thousand times, it still wouldn’t be equal to all of the harm you caused. 

And you can distract and deflect and justify all you want. In the end, all of those people who cheered you on will be gone. Your popularity will be gone. And all you’ll have is yourself, and every ounce of misery and self-hatred you tried and failed to run from, that you drilled into others, and the realization that even though you thought you were the hero of your fandom, in reality, you were the monster you were trying so hard to protect everyone from.

I don’t like bringing up this post very often because it’s so painful to remember, but I think it’s important to remind myself of when the antis are coming back in force.

This is a very interesting post. I think it’s easy for everybody in a fandom to get carried away and forget that behind the blog is a person with their own personal motivations. I feel that the best course of action when dealing with antis is to ignore them. First of all it deprives them of the satisfaction of a response and secondly bullying a bully is still bullying. Would you agree with this?

Agreed. SO much of the anti mindset is built on a pathological need for feedback — you’ll likely notice that the most vicious anti bloggers are almost always the most popular. They’re the ones who are getting constant attention for their behavior, and it feeds their egos and inspires them to continue (and, more often than not, intensify). You’ll ALSO notice that these are oftentimes the people who go through the tags and stalk shippers’ blogs looking for trouble. They need drama, they need attention to survive. They need that feedback loop, positive or negative, and if it doesn’t occur naturally, they’ll create it.

Cut off that source of fuel and they wither. There’s nothing more maddening as an anti to have someone resist your blatant attempts to bait them — it’s bad enough if they’re calm and reasonable in response to your comments/posts, but if they just ignore it entirely? You have to fall back on the attention from your fawning followers, and that’s KIND of fun, but it’s not the same when you’re looking for a fight, when you WANT to hurt those shippers. If you want to piss off an anti, don’t even give them a second glance, don’t say a word; nothing makes them fume more than to see those “awful” shippers happily going about their day, creating content and talking meta and carrying on with the ship they love instead of getting upset and engaging.

Also, it goes without saying, but… don’t try to retaliate. You’ll never be clever enough, and they WILL make themselves out to be the victim. Believe me, I was the undisputed champion of this. You’ll attack them and try to get the last word, and not only do they get the satisfaction of knowing they upset you, but they’ll be surrounded with love and support from their followers because someone was “mean” to them. It’s a total win-win for them: across the board attention, and they end up looking sympathetic. Don’t do it.

Just remember, as a general rule of thumb: 1) don’t give them the attention they’re desperately craving, and 2) living well is the best revenge. If you want to piss off an anti, ignore the hell out of them and continue doing the very thing that’s pissing them off in the first place (i.e. enjoying yourself in the fandom they’re trying to destroy for you).

Adulting Problems

I just got more sleep falling asleep by accident after dinner than i have trying to get a full night's sleep for work D :

I dont get why so many cartoons/fan interpretations of people from the sea have them not eating fish or other sea life. Like, okay, for a lot of them, fish are friends. But we're probably making friends with the octopus too, and they eat crabs and snails and stuff. And so do crabs and fish, for that matter, without considering larger predators like sharks and whales. And in that kind of environment, i highly doubt that even the friendliest interpretation of the little mermaid would only be eating kelp and shit. Like, everything in the ocean eats everything else in the ocean. Maybe they'd still have a social drive against cannibalism, but they'll still have prey species and some method of cooking meat. So instead of asking "will a mermaid be offended if i serve fish", i feel like it's more important to ask what kind of fish would be the mermaid version of cows, and to be sure you aren't serving "dog"-fish or "cat"-fish to them.
