Rene Magritte

This is the script to my infographic of Rene Magritte’s life:

 1.      Rene Magritte was one of the most famous painters of the Surrealism movement, and this is his story.

2.      he was born on 21st November 1898 in Lessines, Belgium.

3.      Magritte had a dark childhood, as in 1912, Magritte’s mother drowned in the River Sambre. When he was just 13 years old.

4.        He was good friends with fellow surrealism artists such as, Andre Breton, Joan Miro and Salvador Dali.

5.        He often made paintings where he cover the face of his subject

6.        Few of the paintings are The Son of Man which is a self-portrait of himself but he covered his face with a green apple.

7.        Galconde and The Mysteries of The Horizon

8.        But his most popular painting is probably The Treachery of Images where he painted an image of a pipe with the words that said “this is not a pipe”

9.        Magritte died on 15th August 1967. He was 68 years old and died due to pancreatic cancer.

CURSED (2014) by Nicole Derksen and  Merel van den Broek

Form:

This 2D animation short film is so good. The style of the “drawing” is pretty much similar to Disney’s style. The animation uses some pastel-like texture for the background and mostly solid color and cel shading for the characters. The creators play around with the color to create the atmosphere or mood to emphasize the story. I would say this animation is very good although not unique enough to my liking, but the movement of the character is smooth, the expressions is great too.

Content:

The story is about an evil witch who unexpectedly fell in love with a local hero. Falling in love made her magic comes out more like a magic from a fairy than an evil witch. But after she accepted the feeling of being in love and actually want to pursue the hero, she found out that the hero is just a playboy. After that she gets back to her true nature, being mean and destroy everyone in the room being laughing and so satisfied of what she did although after that we can see that she feels lonely.

Context:

Since its release, this short movie had accomplish many great things. Being nominated for a few animation award and won on  Eindhovens Film Festival 2014 as the Best Animation. Derksen and van den Broek have the similar interest and style so they work perfectly together. They also went to the same school which is University of Arts in Utrecht, Netherlands. Nicole Derksen is now an animator in a few project. One particular project that catch my eyes is her work for Curt Cobain’s documentary movie titled “Cobain: Montage of Heck”. The animation sequences were made by Hisko Hulsing. Derksen work on the color and shading. But her works alone are wonderful.

A must watch movie. My fav scene is when Lisa shows her scar because its so human-like, having secret and insecurities. Its amazing that this animation movie is so realistic. Amazing but kinda creepy to be honest.

Comparison of the character of balls

All balls have different characteristic based on their material. A golf ball and a tennis ball will have different kind of movement. Based on the chart above we can see that the ball that has the highest bouncing ability is table tennis ball and the lowest is cricket ball. Now although the graphic shows that in the end the tennis and table tennis ball both came to the same height, but what I mean the highest bounce height is based on the height where they came previously and the next bounce. The less height difference means higher bouncing ability.

That we can conclude that the lightest or less dense material that the ball was made make the ball bounce higher

Thought of You (2010) by Ryan Woodward

This 2D short animated film is beyond my expectation. From the cover its just too simple to attract our eyes, because we get used with the thought that elaborate animation with grand and full colour animations are the ones that are great, but this animation proved me wrong, it changes my perspective and appreciate 2D animation more. Not only that 2D animation are more simple than 3D animation, this animation is way more simple than most 2D animation I know. It is simple in the visual but clearly story and the way they made it wasn’t easy at all.

This animation has a romance musical genre. The characters are a boy in black lines and a girl in a white almost luminous lines. They dance and through that dance they tell about a story. From what I get about the story is that the two of them is not with each other anymore. With the opposite colour they have it seems like the scene where they dance with the each other is a memory from the boy when they were together, because the colour made the girl looks like she’s from a different world. The last scene is where the girl suddenly turns color into the same as the boy but then the boy left her. So I guess that is the moment they first separate. People get this idea that when couple break up, girls tend to cry first but then they move on, but with boys they’ll distract themselves and thought of break up as a liberation but then they started to feel the sadness later on. I think that is the story that this animation. Ryan Woodward himself said that people can interpret the story freely but the main message that he was trying to tell is the feeling of longing or missing someone close to your heart. 

The inspiration behind this movie is that the feeling Ryan got when he was on a plane, missing his family. He chose to make an animation that’s different from his previous work (Spiderman, Captain America, etc.) so he made an dancing animation. No “camera” angle change, just plain characters dancing beautifuly

If I got to choose one short film as my favourite, this film is what I’ll choose -or maybe you could already tell that since I’ve posted so many GIFs of them on previous posts. 

Paperman is a short animation film from disney that was published in 2012. Created by John Kahrs, the animator of Ratatouille (again, my all time favourite movie), Frozen, Monster Inc., and many more. In an interview with Animation World Network, director John Kahrs revealed that Paperman first materialized when he was working as an animator at Blue Sky Studios during the 1990s. During his commute through Grand Central Station, he got the inspiration by “the random connections sometimes you make with people”, and he delivered that idea beautifully. 

"Every morning on my way to work I would go through Grand Central Station ... and sometimes you’d meet eye to eye with people, just strangers, like a pretty girl or something, and you’d think is there a connection? You feel that connection for a split second and wonder who that person was. That’s the core idea of it – what if two people were really perfect for each other, and they had that chance meeting? And what if they were separated – how would those two people get back together again? And how could a little bit of magic and fate intervene to bring them back together?" — Director John Kahrs on his inspiration behind Paperman.

Like most of short animation film, Paperman didn’t use any dialog and tell their story through gestures and expressions. Through the whole 6 minutes and 33 seconds this film tells a story about how George and Meg met in a brief encounter and then met each other again through the effort of George and the “universe”. What really stuck in my mind is how this animation could deliver the feeling of what I assumed as love at first sight “realistically”. Most animation movie exaggerate their characters’ expression when they encounter their one, like jaws dropping, eyes get extremely huge, etc., but with this film, it is not.

Ratatouille - This scene shows how much Remy loves food, smiling, and appreciating the taste from food. The background just switch from his real world to “fireworks” flying around, showing that he loves food so much that when he tastes it the world just turns into a better place

this scene hold so much question. Are they gonna meet again? Why is he just standing there like an idiot? Being apart already after such a brief first meeting?! BUT THEY SMILED AT EACH OTHER. I love the way they smile and look at each other because it seems like they’ve known each other for so long.
