MINI HC ! since his mom never went to college , they both need to work shitty jobs in order to make enough money to get by . she’s a better worker than he is , & usually gets full --- time cleaning positions at schools or hotels . ethan , on the other hand , gets part --- time jobs & skips around , getting fired a lot . his main job / the one he keeps the longest is actually at a diner , styled after those from the 50′s ( think johnny rockets . ) he enjoys the atmosphere , & the fact that people from his school don’t tend to go there .

“Yep… that happens a lot,” Morty said this like he would say ‘what else is new?’ but those words didn’t make it to his tongue– thankfully. Again, dealing with these two for multiple years meant he had a plan in place for every scenario (problem) they ran into and this, Summer not being present when Ethan picked her up for a date, was plan number one.

Instead of giving the blonde a fairly typical snarky younger brother response Morty patted his own legs and stood up with a nice big stretch: he had been sitting on the couch for hours. “Last night she was talking to some of her friends about squeezing in a drive to the mall for a special sale at one of the stores before you came over so, y’know, t-t-that might be a good place to start. I think she said JCPenney?”

ETHAN JUST FROWNS AT FIRST . leave it to summer to forget their date & go to jcpenney . still , it’s a better scenario than her ditching him on purpose , or leaving him for another guy , so . . . yeah , okay , he really wants to go with morty’s theory right now . hope in the younger teen has clearly curbed his frustration , so he’s a lot less frenzied when he talks again . ❝ huh . okay . are you gonna come ? we don’t have to walk all the way to the mall , i drove over . ❞ with that , he’s fishing through his pocket for the keys . it’s as if he’s desperate for the company .

HE’S ACTUALLY SURPRISED MORTY’S HELPING --------------- most of the time , his girlfriends’ brothers are either apathetic towards him , or regard him with disgust . morty’s never seemed like a lame kid , though . not that they’ve ever hung out , or . . . anything . actually , this might be the longest conversation they’ve ever had . still , he is helping , which makes him cool in ethan’s book .

004. he isn’t the type to cheat , & he hates it when other guys brag about how many girlfriends they have. ethan might be a dick sometimes , but he would never go behind someone’s back like that --- besides , he’d rather date one person at a time than ruin all of his relationships at once by getting caught. HE EXPECTS THE SAME ATTITUDE FROM HIS PARTNERS , WHICH OFTEN ENDS IN DISAPPOINTMENT.

005. ethan has always wanted a little brother , but when his own older brother turned on him during their ‘ fishing trip , ’ his feelings about that got more . . . complicated. he still wants to be the big brother to someone ( as in the bond / dynamic , not a biological sibling ) , but he’s haunted by what happened to him when he was younger. WHAT IF HE TURNS OUT THE SAME WAY ?

When it comes to Summer and Ethan’s relationship Morty pretty much minds his own business, for a few reasons. The most important reason being Summer is his sister and she has a right to keep her personal social life separate from her family life and the second reason being… Morty doesn’t have the patience for it. Don’t get him wrong– he likes Ethan, as much as a brother can like his sister’s boyfriend, but it feels like there’s a problem every other time they’re together so he keeps his distance. Tries to, anyway. Accomplishing that completely is difficult when you live in the same house.

Take today– right now– for example. Rick’s off playing cards with some of his buddies from Dimension XYZ-236 so Morty decides to take advantage of this impromptu break by watching TV and what happens as soon as he finds an interesting movie? Ethan comes into the room looking like someone just killed his dog and the goddamn fingernail biting. Holy. Shit.

The fifteen year old gives it another ten seconds, tries to block everything else out so he doesn’t get sucked into another daylong adventure, then metaphorically kisses his well deserved break goodbye and pauses the TV. It is clear from the atmosphere in the room that something’s going on with Summer but he’s gonna need some details first.

“Talk to me Ethan.”

“ SUMMER’S GONE ! ” he blurts out immediately , like he’s just been waiting to shout about it & he didn’t have anyone to listen to him until just now. deep brown eyes are filled with panic as he looks down at the younger teenager , frantically typing in his phone password & revealing his multitude of messages to his girlfriend --- nothing back from her in hours. “ i was supposed to pick her up but she’s not --- she’s not here ! & she’s ignoring all of my texts . . . ”

suddenly , his eyes brighten up a bit , some hope obviously rising in him. “ did . . . did she have to go somewhere ? do you know where she is ? ” ( please say yes ! )

it's not through the wooden front door , but the sliding glass to the backyard , which ethan typically chooses to use to get into the smith household. he does it often enough that they don't tell him not to --- even if summer’s dad still gives him looks --- & today's visit isn't even unwarranted. he’s supposed to pick her up for a date : a trip to the movies for the latest cheesy rom - com that ethan would have loved & never admitted to it. it seems like he won't see it at all , though , because his girlfriend is nowhere to be found.

once he’s sure he's checked every inch of the house at least twice , the teen idles back in the living room , obviously distressed. he’s frantically texting her , but he’s not getting so much as a ‘ read. ’ she's never missed a date before , & there's never a time when she isn't even bothering to look at his messages . . .

he bites his lip , then moves on to his fingernails. WHERE THE HELL IS SUMMER ? if something happened to her , ethan doesn't know what he’ll do. then again , he doesn’t know what to do if she’s perfectly fine , either. why would she leave him hanging like this ? why ---
