An Awkward Girl’s Guide To: CHRISTMAS SHOPPING.
WELL LOOK WHAT THE CAT DRAGGED IN! It’s me! I have returned from the depths of hell to help you with what my mom started messaging me about months ago in early August: Christmas shopping.
The text messages went like this:
Mom: What do you want for Christmas?
Me: Mom, it’s summer. I’m in Cabo.
Mom: I know but I am shopping now. What sizes are you?
Me: WTF I don’t know. I could be 187 pounds heavier by then. I have 18 blocks of cheese in my fridge and I’m going to go HAM on all of them in the next week.
Mom: …
Me: Maybe just get me another block of cheese?
I haven’t heard from her since. LOL I HOPE SHE IS OKAY.
One of my worst fears is going out in public, but more specifically, going out into public to be in a crowded mall. Because… people. It’s a tradition that keeps on giving (me anxiety attacks and sweaty arm pits). So without further adieu: Here is YOUR guide to CHRISTMAS SHOPPING.
1. Carry Pepper-Spray.
Okay, yeah. I know this has started of pretty aggressive already. BUT BAE GETS SCARED OF OTHER HUMAN BEINGS. Plus, what do you plan on using when someone reaches for the last copy of the Deluxe edition of 1989? If you come prepared, people will respect the shit out of you. It’s what T. Swift would want.
YOU HEAR THAT, HARRY STYLES? IT’S WHAT T WOULD WANT. (Backslash, Dear Harry Styles: You are younger than me, but if you are ever interested in a Demi Moore/Ashton Kutcher situation, hit me up. I’m a tender angel looking 4 a nice time and also I just want to smell your hair for, like, a quick 5-10 hours.
2. Make a list.
Just like Santa! Except yours is just a list of your family members with question marks beside them probs. The hardest people to shop for will probably be your parental unit. Seriously, as much as your Dad loves his tool store gift certificate, maybe try something exotic. Like an iguana or an elegant sword? Instead of buying your mom soap or incense, get her something you want. Your Mom is legally obligated to love everything you buy for her and thus will just leave it out for you to use. So, spoiler alert, Mom: You’re getting a fucking JET PACK this year.
Your siblings don’t matter. Just get them, like, a stick with gum on it.
Aunts and uncles: usually a safe bet to just go with alcohol. They’re going to be creepy pervs anyway.
GOT A SPECIAL SOMEONE? Give them the gift of your weird boner and then live in fear that they will find out that you only got them your weird boner for Christmas and then die with a weird boner.
3. Stay away from underwear stores.
Obviously. I mean, OBVIOUSLY. You’re already dead from your weird boner in #2. Underwear stores, sometimes called “lingerie stores”, are the purest form of evil.
Did you know that sometimes people will help you find the right SIZE of underwear??
UUUUUH, NO THANKS. Like I’m going to let your gross employee hands touch my uncomfortable, cold, squirrel body. I’ll just aim for larger than I am, so I can fashion a tent out of them if necessary. This shopping trip has already been so very awful. The apocalypse is imminent. And where will you be, you uncomfortable wind nymph? Camping peacefully in your underwear tent.
4. The food court is a safe space.
You’re losing energy. These 2-legged sloth people are ruining your posi-vibes and you need to refuel.
The food court is a beautiful place made for people like you and I. It can be sort of overwhelming if you are susceptible to hang-ger, but if you start to lose your cool, eat some pepper spray to cool you down. (I’ve never tried this, but it’s probably fine.)
There are a few no-no’s in the food court. SEE AS FOLLOWS:
-Taco Bell is diarrhea city. Like, is it made out of it? It’s unclear. -Food court Chinese food will always be disappointing. “But it smells so good!” Dude, I know. I’ve been hurt time and time again. - How is KFC still a thing? Serious Q. -Healthy stuff: no.
5. Trying stuff on is the worst decision you will ever make in your entire life.
First of all: you’re at the mall to shop for other people. Which is SSUUUUHHH boring. Who cares about other people, right?
But sometimes you’ll have a friend or family member that is a similar size and it’ll seem like a good idea to try an article of clothing on to get the gist of what it might look like.
NOPE. YOU ARE WRONG. YOU ARE VERY WRONG. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?
I’ll tell you:
The mall is a hellhole and you are part of the problem. The line for the change room is approximately 8 miles long and you want to just “see” what it looks like. What’s worse is, sometimes stores won’t even have mirrors on the inside of the change room. BECAUSE THIS STORE WAS BUILT IN A TORTURE CHAMBER IN HELL. Obviously.
If you need a size, bring a blow up doll. That way you can try clothes on AND have a friend along for the ride!
6. Books are dumb.
Bad gift. Don’t do it.
7. People keep cutting you off and you actually feel like buying a machete to eliminate every single one of them around you.
People are the worst. We all know it.
That’s why you need to pack 27 pixie sticks in your jacket pocket. Whenever you feel as though you may murder an innocent bystander’s face, suck back a pixie stick. It will give you a burst of adrenaline, therefore making you seem stronger and scarier to those around you.
If you really want to kick it into high gear, put the powder around your face and breathe really loudly. You will terrify the innocent souls who challenge your pathway.
Another option is to just keep shouting “FIRE!!” until everyone leaves the mall.
8. Question your faith in Santa Claus.
Yo, does this bitch even exist? Your feet are aching, your back is killing and your neck sweat has just turned into ass sweat.
Why would Santa want this? Is he a monster? Is this an effing TEST, Santa???
Yes. Yes it is.
Santa clearly makes everyone go to malls at Christmas time so make us prove ourselves to the one true God: Retail. We must all pay our dues in order to get the big payoff: one thousand gifts under the Christmas tree.
Unless you’re one of those people who believe in a no-gift policy…
hahahahahAHahHAhhaHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. Just kidding. Those people don’t exist.
9. You have to pee and you have 800 bags in your arms.
Very calmly and gently start blowing the whistle that you should be wearing around your neck. Repeat after me:
“THIS IS NOT A DRILL. BABY GIRL/BOY HAS TO AND WILL PEE ON ANYONE IN THE IMMEDIATE VICINITY. I REPEAT. THIS IS NOT A DRILL, PIGS.”
Once you’ve reached the bathroom from the other side of the mall, find the oldest person in the loo to watch over your stuff. Old people are very trusting and also very slow. They’ll probably just stand there questioning what you just said and you’ll already be done washing your hands.
10. Realize that online shopping is a thing.
Why did we- Why would you?– Is this a dream? Are you dead? Why did you come here? You can just online shop.
OH INTERNET, I L U. I’M NEVER LEAVING MY HOUSE AGAIN.
HAPPY SHOPPING, DINKS.
