Happy
In August, the shape of my happy unexpectedly changed. It expanded and bubbled in a joyous way filled with smiles, companionship and I a little bit of love. Since then some of then some of what had caused that has changed, and I was asked tonight if I could say I was happy. I answered that it was an unfair question to be asked... of course I'm happy. I'm lucky beyond words to have a family that transcends any expectations I have, filled with friends and family who know how to make me feel loved in ways that everyone should hope they get to feel one day. But that doesn't mean I don't get to be sad also. My happy had changed shape, and part of that is missing. So now I will wait, and I will change and my happy will change and one day we will be the same shape again. So I'm happy, but I'm sad too. And all that is okay.
Before I Have to Learn to Sleep With a New Love
After my first love I forgot how to sleep by myself.
Since him, I have forgotten how to sleep with someone.
The last and third boy I loved would wrap himself around me like a squid. His hands held mine and his arm was my pillow. Every inch of him touched any inch of me he could find. His skin stuck to mine like a vinyl window cling on glass, Without a single bubble. I calmed down because his breathing forced me to. He held me so tight I could not move. Like a dog in a thunder jacket with my eyes closed I would fall asleep because his body made mine.
My first love had been younger He had to learn at the same time as me And we found a pattern together It worked so well we did it every night For two years You can understand why after that I’d forgotten how to do it on my own.
My second love and I never shared a bed. The space between one and three was punctuated by nights so short I didn't have to learn again.
When you would fall asleep I’d lay there awake and remind myself to breathe I would panic that I could never learn That I would be awake FOREVER. I could feel how much of a stranger I was to you. But slowly I learned again.
I learned how we fit together. I learned how to make your nightmares quiet. You learned how much I loved breakfast. We learned that we slept at different times. I remembered more things I’d forgotten. Deciding who has to drive, what time do we eat, Where do we eat, who showers first, How often do we talk when we're not together, Which friends do we see, What kind of meat goes in the chili?
Now it doesn’t matter again. And it’s only me in the bed again. And there are lists of things I will forget. Again.
my tears will make a river and you will either drown in it, or float safely to me.
The final scene of Boy Meets World. Stupid show, making me feel feelings.
Nevermind. He called.
And today my telepathic powers of staring at the phone and making a boy contact me fail again.
Can't learn nothin'
Son: I can't learn nothing from that book.
Mom: It works for Al.
Son: Well Al's a conspiracy theorist.

The window
TC: What did you do to your head?
Me: I hit it climbing in a window frame.
::proceeds to tell the story of my date::
Me: It was his window.
TC: Yeah, he definitely had his opportunity and didn't take it.
Me: No, it was his window that I hit my head on.
A date
Me: I went on a date with MS.
CJ: A "date."
JM: Did you bone?
Me: No.
JM: Then it wasn't a date.
Me: Oh, so you and I could just go to dinner, drink wine on a roof til 1am, and maybe cuddle a little?
JM: No way. You definitely went on a date with him.

I’m like that. Either I forget right away or I never forget.
