I have some time to write and several different ideas I'm equally excited about, so I'm going to ask you guys to help me choose one. (I do plan to write all of these eventually, it's a question of which I start first.)

I'm doing a spinoff of my NieYao fic Song of Jin Yao. Each chapter goes into a different way for Nie Mingjue to find out Meng Yao's secret.

1: "He was alone, finally unsupervised; it was the closest he’d gotten in weeks to an opportunity to do something. But there was nothing he could do." Just walk out. You can leave!!! Work, social thing, your own wedding night if you're sneaky ... If it sucks, hit da bricks!

2: When I wrote the line "The wedding banquet was ten courses long and crying couldn’t fill up all that time. He paced around the room, snooped through Nie Mingjue’s things...", I asked myself, is there anything interesting Meng Yao could find? And I immediately thought of something so interesting I couldn't use it because it would derail the whole scene.

3: "I was going to find a brothel and look for a woman around my height. I’d offer her … however much money it took. A lot." The woman Meng Yao ends up recruiting for his scheme has some concerns about her long-term survival prospects. Once she's birthed the sect leader's child, what reason will his wife have to let her live?

4: "It wasn’t a very good plan. There are far too many points where it could have failed." But by some miraculous streak of luck, it doesn't fail. Meng Yao's plan goes off without a hitch, he's utterly miserable, and then Jin Guangshan decides he wants Nie Mingjue dead.

I have a very silly question regarding Sweet Nectar. Is there an in-universe reason why JGY only put on more weight in Lanling and not in Qishan, despite being forced to store up nectar in both places (and even for a longer time in Qishan than Lanling)?

The out-of-universe reason is that I'd had the idea in my mind of that scene where JGY shows up at the Unclean Realm looking so dramatically changed since the very beginning, and only thought "wait, but what about Qishan?" when I was already pretty deep into writing 😅

But because I'm me, I did come up with an in-universe justification once it occurred to me. It's because WRH was mostly concerned about not wasting the nectar. He fed MY enough for him not to starve, but they were on war rations and noncombatants got less to eat than soldiers who were out there doing hard physical work. MY got big because the nectar was left to build up for such a long time, but once it was drained his body was more or less the same as it was before.

JGS, on the other hand, was feeding JGY large amounts of rich food. At first this was because he figured it would make the Jin sect look wealthy and impressive if their replete was visibly gaining weight (he was right, people did think this). When he came up with his murder plot he ramped it up even more, because repletes produce more nectar as they get fatter and he was aiming to have JGY produce a lot of nectar. The more nectar there is, the more poison it can deliver, and he wanted to be very sure NMJ got a big enough dose to take him out hard and fast.

This might be the last update I post for this chapter 🙏 It's really looking like I'll be able to get it done before next week. It's going to be longer than the previous chapter, they seem to be growing every time.

His arms were still weak and shaking after their spar, but he still wanted to throw himself at Nie Mingjue and pummel him into dust, never mind how little chance he had of even leaving a mark.

Sorry I haven't posted any WIP snippets for a while... My resolution to bring back Six Sentence Sunday didn't last very long. I've been mostly working on this one, which is a secret. I'll tell you about it in *checks notes* two weeks when the creator reveals go live.

In the meantime, I can now go back to working on my other, non-secret fics. I'll try to have a snippet ready for next Sunday

Fanart Frenzy: Even as A Dream

I am participating in the @fanartfrenzy event (that was technically supposed to finish at the end of January, but the work took me a bit longer than I anticipated). This is what I made for the prompt "Create art for a fic you've reread more than once".

This art is based on the fic Even as A Dream by Canker_Blossom on ao3. Five years after I first bookmarked it, it's still my favourite nieyao fic of all time. The sheer love and yearning between Jin Guangyao and Nie Mingjue takes my breath away, and it always makes my heart ache in just the right way. I can't count how many times I've reread it, and as soon as I saw this prompt I knew this was the fic I was going to make something for.

This embroidery piece represents the love confession in the plum garden (and the many, many almost confessions that took place under those same plum blossoms). The Chinese characters say Wǒ ài nǐ: "I love you".
