Because every fanclub has someone like this...

Arland had a fanclub. And undoubtedly someone was that special sort of asshole who pointed out “Hey, your profile says you’re pan, but you’ve only talked about your crushes on women. Seems like you’re just lying about being attracted to men and you’re actually straight.” 

And Arland would never know how to respond to something like that so someone else would have to address the question. “I-I don’t know how to prove I’m not straight....”

“Arland, you don’t have to.” And Argo would politely address the question, and Ilior would address it less politely, and Liar would scream at them. 

Brought to mind only by the realization that although Arland’s attracted to both men and women, and has mentions of being attracted to men in the past, the only crushes he’s gone into detail lately have been on women. It occurred to me that surely someone in the past must have been an asshole about it.

On the one hand, recently orphaned Arland with fresh trauma. On the other hand, Kai scooping up a super tiny Arland into her arms and giving him a huge hug when he needs it most, that’s a nice image. Big muscles for big hugs, right?

Leading to Arland being super happy when he grows up and gets to work in the palace on his own. “Oh, hey! Oh, man, look at you, all grown up!” Super happy reunion. 

I’m trying to justify my own brain hurting me, too, I think.

Hey, wanna join me in pain? Because I was just imagining a young Arland meeting human Kai when the paladins came to offer their condolences to what was left of what used to be a large and loyal family to the Altean Royalty. (Arland’s family was huge, and they DID used to work in the palace.) 

I’m imagining Kai trying to talk to the small child and being shrugged off. He doesn’t want to talk to her, or rather...he wants to talk to her, but he doesn’t want to talk in general. Every time he tries, he just hiccups and starts sobbing and this is the Blue Lion of Voltron he’s talking to and she’s so beautiful and she’s here to tell him she’s sorry about his parents but he misses his family and his back hurts and his throat hurts and he can’t stop crying!

I just feel like scenes of Lions and their Paladins as kids would be more adorable. But for some reason my head could only conjure the version of young Arland that’s super sad and traumatized. Maybe bc I wanted to imagine bby Arland being hugged by someone when he needed it most.

Arland looked around the station curiously; he’d only had a slight hiccup parking the Blue Lion in the cargo bay, hiding her in a corner, when an unusually well-dressed man with strange ears asked him for his travel itinerary. This space station was full of peculiar primarily light-skinned aliens who seemed obsessed with office work. He’d been a paper pusher himself at one point, but Arland couldn’t for the life of him ever remember being this obsessed with the process of it all. 

Now he was wandering the halls and earning little more than the occasional curious glance. Aliens wandering the halls didn’t earn any questions or further requests for paperwork? He glanced around busily, pulling his wrist to his mouth, “Liar, these just seem to be office workers...”

“Office workers? Occupying an entire quadrant of space adjacent to a vortex? Highly unlikely,” the voice scoffed back over his wrist communicator.

“I know it seems unlikely, but-” He’d been too busy looking about, and adjusting his communicator, he’d run straight into one of the peculiar aliens. “Quiznak! Ugh....”

And then one day Arland discovered Helios, and sat there staring at it for a while. “What are you doing, Arly?”

“This thing the probes picked up. It’s a fully-staffed and fully populated station, over in Quadrant Yurnuerl-47. Just found it the other quintent.” 

“Why is it an H? Why does it have an eye?”

“I don’t know...it’s the strangest thing I’ve seen in deca-phoebs, I think.”

“That’s impressive, considering your research efforts.”

“None of the other things were fully-staffed giant H-shaped stations with an extra-terrestrial eye used as a focal point.”

Arland was created as the former Blue Paladin before the actual former Paladins of Voltron were revealed recently. He’s a former royal Regent, Altean Paladin, and always always a huge culture nerd who explores space and is a giant bi nerd with a sad past and for some reason he bleps in his icon.
