Paul Peel (Canadian, 1860-1892) A Venetian Bather, 1889
Paul Peel, 1860–1892, an academic painter, was one of the first Canadian artists to receive international recognition during his lifetime. Married in 1886 to Isaure Fanchette Verdier, a painter of Danish origin, their union produced Robert André, 1886–1956, and Émilie Marguerite in 1888. However, following a lung infection contracted in Paris, he died in his sleep at the age of 31.
