By the Water, oil on canvas, André Lagrange, circa 1930. Although often misdated to 1885, this work reflects the lyrical realism of Lagrange’s mature period.
Four boys by the river, their bodies sunlit and bare, lounging in a choreography of leisure and latent desire. One plays the accordion; another reclines like a fallen angel. The scene hums with summer and suggestion—Lagrange’s brush tracing the contours of youth, complicity, and quiet provocation.
