my curse of strahd session tonight was crazyy and had such banger moments like. our artificer went all “the sun will rise again in barovia” and my pc now has a dark taint on her soul. fiona got more traumatised and we found strahd’s emo diary !!! he said the lines!!! he was like “i am ancient. i am the land.” and also the party is destined to hate each other in the end according to the tarokka cards so fun !!!!

reply with your most unhinged curse of strahd headcanon. mine is that sergei should open a bakery: i think he would be good at it. altar-natively since hes gonna be a priest he bakes the bread they use at services and people go just because he makes really good bread. everyone is like “oh is sergei that good of a priest” and someone is like “you haven’t been to a chapel in barovia until you’ve tried his bread.” lots of things are said in the confession booth. they cant get sergei to stop making bread because it really is that good.

the horror in curse of strahd shines best when it’s like you know you aren’t horrible, but you have to do horrible things to survive ; does that make you a monster? even if you go home you can never look at the person whose memory you sacrificed the same way again !!! sometimes saving one person is damning another and someone will pay the price.

having a live audience in ur curse of strahd session is truly something because you can make your character make horrible choices and watch six shocked faces break out in laughter. for context we got time looped back to The War and my girlypop decides to sneak into strahd n sergei’s war camp. there is an 80% chance i have to make a new player character.

i think one of the things that cos as a setting does so well is the absence of sunlight like. you have never known lack because the sun is a constant in the universe you live in. no matter how bad things get the sun will rise. but in barovia, what light you get is artificial. in here the sun is a myth. this fact will not bother you until you are six months into your adventure and you have forgotten how it feels to watch the sun rise.

suppose you get lost in the woods in barovia. there are no stars; you can’t look up and figure out constellations if there is nothing up there. it starts with glow-in-the-dark ribbons on trail markers with a light spell imbued in them that someone left after spending a night in the dark. eventually the tale is spun enough times that it take on a myth of its own. ghost lights in the dark that guide lost travelers to the nearest inn. eventually someone gets the idea to float these lights to the canopy. sometimes the lights are extinguished. someone will always relight them.

someday a traveler from another world comes by and gets lost in the woods and tells everyone about the constellations they saw that guided them to safety.
