summary; when grace smith sent her brother, will, aspen collins' profile, her only intention was to help him with finding recipes. she didn't expect her brother to fall head-over-heels in love with the baking influencer, or to start posting his own baking content in hopes of getting her attention.
i have a new oc idea and one of the name ideas i came up with is daisy, and when i was looking at last names i saw "buchanan" and thought "wait that would be so cute!" and then had to remind myself... there is already a daisy buchanan who exists in literature... and she's pretty popular 😭
connor's hair is still wet from his post-game shower, sticking up in every direction in the cutest way possible. his eyes are bright, a huge smile covering his face.
the blackhawks won tonight, and connor bedard doesn't think he's been this happy in a really long time.
sure, they've won a few games during this season. but blaire was present for this win. she saw it, with her own eyes. that's why it matters more, why it's so important.
blaire would never tell connor this, but she hadn't totally expected the win. going to this game was rather impromptu, with connor calling her just this morning and offering her an extra ticket. she'd accepted instantly, her heart soaring at the thought that connor had an extra ticket and thought of her.
it was only after accepting the ticket that blaire realized she didn't know much about blackhawks hockey. honestly, the only hockey team she's ever really followed are the canucks. and wherever mack ends up, that's the team she'll cheer for more than likely.
and even though blaire knew she could walk into the rink and get by with just knowing the rules of hockey and nothing about the blackhawks, she wanted to do better than that.
macklin had informed his sister that the chicago blackhawks aren't... great. he had been excited for her to see connor, happily saying that they would have to meet up when he comes out to chicago to visit her. ultimately though, he advised that she just cheer for connor as much as possible.
which, of course, blaire did. but she cheered a lot more than mack led her to believe she would.
connor was ecstatic that they'd managed to snag a win with blaire in the audience. he knew exactly where her seat was, and made eye contact with her as much as he could. he scored two goals, and pointed at her after both.
as soon as the game was over, he did everything he could to take his gear off, shower, and then get out to blaire as quickly as he possibly could.
he'd told himself that he would be cool, aloof, casual, when he saw blaire. but he hadn't been able to hold himself back, and had rushed towards her, wrapping his arms around her and hugging her tight for longer than he probably should have.
and that was when he asked the question.
what did you think?
blaire couldn't stop smiling. "that was so fun," she enthuses, butterflies swarming her stomach at the excited look on connor's face. "i-honestly, connor, i can't thank you enough. that was probably the best night of my life!"
"i'm glad," connor replies, nodding. "i think you may have been my good luck charm. i haven't scored in a few games, but the second you show up, i get two?"
"shut up," blaire waves him off, blushing. "i don't think people can be lucky charms,"
connor scoffs. "who died and made you queen of lucky charms? i'm just saying, there's a connection,"
they stand in silence for a few seconds, blaire unsure what to say in response to that. and yet, where this silence would probably be uneasy with other people, it's surprisingly comfortable. blaire has found in the last few weeks that she never feels more content than when she's with connor.
it's crazy, and amazing, and she never thought that she would get this again. she's never been more thankful for anything, though.
"do you... want to get dinner?" connor asks. "i mean, i know it's late and you probably ate during the game but i'm starving. and i'm probably not gonna be able to fall asleep for the next couple hours at least, so..."
"i'd love to," blaire says, her body angling towards connor's a little bit more, subconsciously.
blaire doesn't notice.
connor does.
they leave together, not holding hands, but walk as close together as is possible. they bump into each other occasionally, neither saying anything about it or doing anything to change it.
blaire doesn't make it to her 9 am class the next morning, on account of being in connor's house until about four in the morning, just talking to him. he drives her back to her dorm, of course, giving her a long hug goodbye.
she kisses him on the cheek, after a lot of hyping herself up, but she does it.
connor watches her walk into her building, partially to make sure she gets inside safely, and also because he can't stop staring at her.
nine year old connor would be jumping up and down with joy. the little boy who only had eyes for blaire celebrini and loudly announced to anyone who would listen that he was going to marry her someday. he'd been so upset when the celebrinis moved away that he had laid in his backyard, staring up at the blue sky and squinting against the sun for days.
he didn't want to jinx it, or read too much into her actions, but it really seems like blaire's into him, the same way he's into her.
it was after that game that connor decided he was going to do something about it, this crush (if that word can even encapsulate all his feelings for her) that he's been harboring for as long as he can remember. even after blaire moved away, after the house was empty and then alive with a new family, connor never stopped thinking about her. dating other people throughout middle school and college, blaire was always the one that got away.
and now she's back.
obviously, if connor's reading things wrong, he's going to respect that. he would never dream of doing anything to hurt blaire, especially not pressuring her into a relationship.
but if blaire is into him?
there's no way connor is letting her slip through his fingers again.

Curran Rafferty grew up in Dorchester, living with his mom, dad, and his older twin brothers, Cashell and Cillian. He was on skates almost before he could walk...His mother, who immigrated from Ireland, loved hockey and decided to share that love to all three boys.
Curran stuck with it, never letting it go. He excelled in every level his parents could save for, going from pee-wee leagues to local school teams and eventually to the IIHF World Junior Championships, playing for team USA at age 15. This excellence in hockey led him to get watched by scouts when he was just 16, becoming Captain of his hockey team up until he was 18. At 18, he graduated high school, known as a prodigy to the hockey world, and ended up getting the Hobey Baker award his freshman year of college, also at just 18 years old.
But this drive for being great wasn't fully from himself and the happiness it brought. Home had its negative effects, too. Curran's mother died when he was 9, and his father had been unfaithful in the marriage already. Curran's father fell into this trap, drinking and screaming in loud fits of rage, blaming the children for small things. Silly things. Curran's father wasn't the best guy, to say the least.
After his wife's death, he pushed Curran, as far as he could go, to skate fastest, get the best stickhandling, best shots. He went as far as to physically hurt him to get him to, all at the young age of 9, until he was 13. His father told him, ‘I am only valuable if I succeed.’ / ‘I need to be strong or I’m nothing.’ which got carved deep into Curran's mind. Curran's siblings tried to protect him as much as they could, trying to make Curran not take the worst of it. Hockey became an escape and a burden, the thing he loved, and the thing that made him want to disappear.
Eventually he got out of that apartment. Cillian and Cashell had gotten ahold of some organization who had helped the two get a place to stay and a better-than-nothing paying job. Their father's actions still caused negative effects to Curran, causing him to smoke and lash out at school. His grades dropped. He began eating less, staying at the rink longer. Curran stayed at the top of his league, pushing himself as if his father were still there. Cillian and Cashell tried to help, tried to do whatever they could. Cillian and Cashell couldn't afford counselling though, so tried to provide their own help to him, which still, wasn't the best.
In college, just barely getting in from a last-minute scholarship, Curran carried the pressure, a fear of disappointing someone, and that thought of love comes from performing. As everyone saw a rising star, he thought he was one mistake away from collapsing. He didn't want to fail. Didn't want to ask for help. And then he met Brody, his roommate who helped him feel comfortable, or at least a little less anxious. He felt free, for once. Over time the two fell for each other, but nothing official actually happened, just too-long looks, lingering touches and secrets nobody else knew.
By the end of his first year of college, everything he had been carrying caved in on him. He couldn't see a way forward. This was where help came in. Help he'd needed for a while now. Therapy, support, and distance from his father.
He eventually got drafted shortly after that, in June. Hockey wasn't the only thing keeping him alive anymore. It was something he chose for himself, not because of his father. Something he loved again.

blaire's younger brother is what experts would (and have) called a hockey prodigy. he's spectacular, not just for his age, but in general. he's currently in his senior year of high school, headed off to college to play hockey this time next year.
macklin's not just a prodigy himself, he has friends who are prodigies, has played withkids who have grown up to be just as successful as him, although no one's really surpassed him. at least, not yet.
despite all of this, the only hockey players blaire really follows and knows what's going on with are her brothers. macklin, of course, and also her older brother aiden.
so even though she probably should, blaire celebrini has no idea why connor bedard is in chicago right now.
blaire's in chicago for school. despite her initial goal of staying as close to home, to family, as possible, the university of chicago was an opportunity she didn't want to pass up.
one week of classes, of beginning her art history degree, and blaire knows that this is where she was always meant to end up.
unfortunately, that doesn't make the homesickness any easier to deal with.
she calls her mom every night, texts mack and charlie constantly, too. she texts her dad a lot, but he doesn't respond as much, though he calls her as much as he can. aiden is already in college, hanging out with friends and playing hockey, so he does his best, but his response times vary, often anywhere from four hours to four days after a text is sent.
blaire's shy, shyer than she'd like to be. her roommate, isla, is incredibly outgoing. isla has lots of friends, has already gone out pretty much every night since the semester started. a few times, blaire's thought about asking isla if she could go with her, but the idea of going out in chicago, a town that she's already unfamiliar with, with people she doesn't know? it doesn't sound very fun, so she's just resigned herself to spending most nights in her dorm, alone.
it's the first weekend of school, and blaire has decided to try and explore the city.
things are already not quite what she expected.
her plan was to stop by the coffee shop close to campus, and then just walk around for a few hours, try and orient herself a little bit in this new place.
she walked into the coffee shop, looking down at her phone, reading a new text from her mom, encouraging her and comforting her.
when she looked up, there he was.
connor bedard.
at first, she wasn't sure it was actually him. thought it might just be her mind playing tricks on her, telling her that her childhood friend, one she'd been incredibly close with (and maybe had a huge crush on) was standing right in front of her, in chicago, illinois, of all places.
but then he looked up, too, and there was no denying it.
"blaire?" he said, a huge smile sprawling across his face at the sight of her. he made his way through the coffee shop until he was standing right in front of her, closer than the two of them have been in years. "oh my god, it's really you," he says, a surprising amount of reverence in his voice.
she doesn't say anything for a few seconds, just taking him in. he looks pretty much the same, although he definitely looks more grown up than the twelve year old connor that blaire last interacted with. he's taller than she remembers. broader, too.
when she realizes she's staring, she shakes herself from the trance, and smiles back.
"connor," she feels like she's testing it out, saying his name again. it's been so long since she did, since she forced herself to stop thinking about him, that it feels new and exciting. "yeah, it's me. it's... wow, it's so good to see you!"
her cheeks hurt from smiling, her eyes roaming up and down his body, trying to greedily drink up as much of him as she possibly can.
when blaire makes eye contact with connor again, he leans in, and then his arms are around her.
once again, he's bigger than she remembers. his arms are thick, muscled. she wraps her arms around his neck, pulling him into her, and the press of his hard chest against hers is both expected and not.
he holds her for longer than she thought he would, something she's not really complaining about. she would let him keep hugging her, but her heart has started beating faster in her chest, almost uncomfortably fast, so she forces herself to pull away.
it's his turn to look at her now, cataloguing all the changes and things that have stayed the same. there's a soft smile on his face, the same expression he would get whenever they would talk after games. when he would remind her of the goals he scored, and the assists he made.
it was so wonderfully familiar, and unexpected, that blaire had the urge to hug him again.
connor shook his head, still smiling. "funny seeing you here," he joked, laughing a little bit.
blaire smiled, wide. "you're such a goofball,"
"i know," he smiled, and the unspoken words hung in the air between them. the words that always followed the first two. but i'm your goofball.
the silence stretched between them, both of them humming with excitement at seeing the other, but not sure where to go from here.
finally, blaire broke the silence. "so... what are you doing here? in chicago? i definitely wasn't expecting to see you," she can't wipe the big, idiotic smile from her face, so beyond excited yet nervous at seeing connor again.
"i uh... i just got drafted. to the blackhawks," he says, and by the look on his face blaire can tell that he's incredibly proud of himself, but trying to downplay it. "i live here,"
"wait, really?" blaire's entire being is filled with utter disbelief. "you're kidding. i live here, too!"
connor lights up again, more than he already was. "seriously? oh my god, that's amazing!"
"yeah, i go to the university of chicago!" she exclaims, finally feeling happy and excited about something after a long, lonely first week of classes. "i literally just started. this is my first weekend here,"
"wow, that's... i'm so proud of you," he can barely speak through his huge smile, and blaire feels the same. his eyes sweep her again, up and down, and his cheeks burn bright pink. "you look amazing,"
blaire blushes, smiles nervously. "thanks," she bites her bottom lip, eyes locked on his. she tucks a piece of hair that escaped from her messy bun behind her ear and adjusts her glasses. she takes a huge gulp of air, and then says, "you look great too,"
he runs a hand through his hair, fluffing it. he looks at her with a look in his eye that makes blaire's stomach swoop with excitement.
"do you..." connor hesitates, gritting his teeth, but then pushing through. "do you have any plans today? i have a free day from practice finally, so um, if you wanted to hang out, we totally could,"
blaire smiles, heart soaring at the offer.
"well, i was gonna explore the city today," she starts, watching as connor deflates slowly. "but i think it would be really fun to do it with you,"
the brightness comes back to connor's face in an insant, and he starts nodding excitedly.
"perfect,"
"you'll never guess who i ran into today,"
isla's out again with new friends. today, she asked blaire if she wanted to come with, but it felt more like a pity offer than anything, so blaire declined. besides, she wanted to be able to call her mom and tell her all about the amazing day she had.
"who?" robyn asks. she's sitting at the dining room table, so painfully familiar that blaire can practically smell the cherry-scented candle her mom is undoubtedly burning. she's writing on a notepad, probably making her to-do list for tomorrow, readers on and hair pulled back into a bun.
blaire smiles, wanting to ask who else is in the room or in earshot, but not wanting to make it too obvious that she's not sure how her younger brother is going to feel about this.
she decides to just blurt it out.
"connor bedard," blaire watches in real time as her mom pauses, thinks on that name for a few seconds, and then laughs as robyn's jaw drops.
"really?" she gasps, a huge smile overtaking her face. "oh, that's amazing honey! you were so sad to move away from him, i'm so glad you met up!"
blaire feels her cheeks turn red, but does her best to ignore it. "yeah. um... we didn't technically meet up. i ran into him at a coffee shop near campus,"
robyn rolls her eyes good-naturedly. "whatever. how is he? what's he up to? why's he in chicago?"
based on the look on her mom's face, blaire can tell that her mom is just as confused at connor being in chicago as she was. which clearly means that she hasn't been keeping up with the nhl draft recently, either, which makes her feel a little bit better.
blaire has no doubt that if she were to inform her dad that connor bedard is in chicago, he would respond with: "oh yeah! he got drafted to the blackhawks!"
"he's good," blaire responds slowly, thinking back to her day with him. they'd roamed pretty much the entire city of chicago, going to local businesses, looked at the bean for a while, and basically just walked around while catching each other up on their lives. they'd agreed to keep hanging out, and had exchanged numbers so that they could continue to talk. they figured that since they're both living in chicago now, and they're both new, it would be nice to have a familiar face. "he just got drafted to the blackhawks, so he's there playing hockey."
robyn leans back in her chair and smiles proudly. "that's wonderful. ah, he was always such a good kid, and a good player. it's not surprising that he's in the nhl now,"
"i know!" blaire gushes. "it sounds like he's doing really good. he was the first overall pick, which is so cool and so impressive. he's really excited to start,"
"well it's nice that you're living in the same city as him, now!" robyn points out. "a familiar face, right? someone to talk to and hang out with when you get lonely,"
there's a suggestive hint to her tone, and blaire scoffs, trying to act as casual as possible, even though she's having difficulty hiding her excitement.
"yeah, i guess," she says as nonchalantly as possible.
in reality, blaire is screaming inside. well, her ten year old self who was madly in love with connor bedard and was convinced she was going to marry him someday is screaming. she was heartbroken when the celebrini family moved away from vancouver, feeling like her family was ripping her away from the love of her life.
of course, that was quite dramatic, but it was the way that she felt.
meeting up with him again today, after nearly nine years of being apart... it felt like some sort of fairy tale.
the only person blaire's ever told about her all-consuming childhood love for connor is her mom. she's not sure how everyone else in her family would feel, particularly aiden and macklin, who played with connor. there was never any bad feelings between any of them, but there was definitely some competition.
besides, mack and aiden are ultra protective. blaire has no doubt that if anything were to start with connor (and that's a really big if), they would have reservations simply due to the fact that connor bedard is a hockey player, and in their words "they know what hockey players are like."
every time they say this, blaire points out that they are hockey players, but they just smile and say they're different.
"we um... we exchanged numbers," blaire says, smiling cheekily. she leans back on her bed, looking at the collection of polaroids on the wall next to her twin size bed of her family and friends back home. "we're gonna keep hanging out."
robyn squeals, and blaire laughs, trying to shush her mom. if she keeps going like that, someone's going to come into the dining room asking what's going on, and there's no way robyn will be able to contain her excitement, and she'll spill the secret for sure.
"this is so exciting honey!" robyn exclaims. "the two of you are finally going to get together! i'm so happy for you,"
blaire wants to be annoyed, wants to chastise her mom for being too dorky, but her mother's happiness is so palpable it's making her smile, too.
she opens her mouth, almost tells her mom that he hasn't even texted yet, so it's not as big of a deal as she thinks it is.
that's when her phone pings.
unknown number: hi this is connor
unknown number: i had a lot of fun with you today
unknown number: do you wanna hang out tomorrow too? one of my coaches recommended this really good italian place downtown
blaire adds his number to her contacts, and smiles at her mom.
"he just texted me," she announces.
once again, robyn celebrini squeals with excitement, causing her daughter to break out in a fit of giggles.
another few minutes go by of the mother-daughter duo talking excitedly about this new development, when another text comes.
connor bedard: sorry if that was too forward i just had a lot of fun today
blaire giggles, and responds.
blaire: that wasn't too forward! i'd love to 😊
connor bedard: cool! i have a morning practice until 11, how does noon sound?
blaire: sounds perfect! see you then (:
that night, blaire spends a good hour and a half planning her outfit for seeing connor the next day. she wanted it to be perfect, and look good, but not look like she put too much effort into it. but also not like she didn't put any effort into it.
it was a very complicated process.
blaire went to bed thinking about her beautiful outfit laid out on her desk chair, her makeup and light up mirror on her desk. she was already planning the everything shower she was planning to take that morning, and was practically vibrating with anxiety and excitement thinking about the hang out planned with connor for the following day.
she was so happy and excited that she didn't even complain when isla stumbled, drunk, into the apartment, knocking things over and making so much noise that she woke blaire up.
because yeah, that's annoying.
but blaire celebrini and connor bedard are reunited.
