So like. I'm pitching this to the Simon and Ryland shippers, not to Martyn fans, because I feel like true Martyn fans will get me on this without an explanation needed.
Martyn InTheLittleWood's datastream lore is a one way trip, like the other two, but in a way that is completely accidental. He presses a button that he shouldn't have pressed and gets trapped in something that he didn't have to get trapped in.
The "Datastream" is sort of a space between everything on the internet and Martyn uses it as a way to travel between video games to fight an evil company called "CHEST" that's doing... something? Evil? To video games? The guy who made the device that trapped Martyn in it has recruited him to fight CHEST because he doesn't know how to get Martyn out so, in the meantime while tries to, Martyn just fights for his cause.
Martyn was NOT supposed to be in there but they don't know how to get him out so they just. Have him do stuff while he's there.
The idea I have is that when Stratt copies over the Internet onto the Hail Mary, Martyn just gets copied too and ends up traveling through space with Grace extremely confused and unsure of how he got here. I think that's fun.
The interesting part comes in when you look at who Martyn is as a person and how he, compared to the other two, reacts to being put in this situation. Martyn is an opportunist and often takes advantage of the people around him to get what he wants. He's manipulative and at times cruel, the most notable example of this being when he manipulated a god into sacrificing itself to help him by promising he'd take care of the world in the gods place- only to completely ditch the world without any sort of remorse. I mean, it's a video game so no big deal, but it still kinda shows how little he cares about the damage he causes.
Martyn doesn't seem to hold any resentment for being trapped in the datastream, but he also is shown to be blocking out any emotions he might have on it. He convinces himself everyone he meets is not real so he doesn't feel bad about hurting them, even when he's playing a game that could reasonably be multiplayer. He lies very easily, not even hesitating a little. He doesn't only lie to do what needs to be done, sometimes he just lies because it's funny.
Now compare this to Ryland and Simon and you have a pretty fun dynamic? I think? Simon and Martyn in particular could relate to being a weapon fighting for a cause, but they diverge in that Martyn actively enjoyed it. Ryland and Martyn are fun too, Martyn is probably similar to Stratt in a way that can be fun to explore?
Anyways whatever just get Martyn on that space ship it doesn't even have to be romantic I just want him to cause problems. He'd start as their friend and slowly turn into an enemy.
