She couldn’t resist giggling when he rolled his eyes. “It’s so true, I just can’t help myself.” Her eyes roamed his now bared chest before she leaned just a little further back into the comforting water.
“You might want to try being less pedantic,” he muttered, although he grinned faintly as he said it. “You going to be in there long? The floor isn’t comfortable.”
He heard the heartbeat before the footsteps, something he’d learned so many years ago. It was easier to pinpoint targets when you only focused on their heart. If his stomach could growl, it probably would as he looked over the sweaty human. A tightening of his jaw was his only reaction, keeping himself from reacting as he would anywhere else. “Not much bother, but you should be careful. Especially when you’re alone.”
“Of course, sir. My mistress did give me permission, but I should have been paying better attention.” He pushed his hair off his forehead, eyeing the super warily - not disrespectfully though. He didn’t want to get in trouble. And it was true enough that he should have been paying more attention; catching a super off-guard could be bad for the health.
“small things.” he admitted, “nothing impressive. bracers, stuff like that.”
“I couldn’t make anything at all, so even the little stuff is pretty impressive to me.”
“I can see how it would seem that way. I’ve seen many trends and eras come and go, that’s for sure.” Daniel sighed, though not sadly, and sat up more fully. “What do you like to do with your free time, Andrew?”
“I bet,” he muttered. Sometimes he tried to think about what it must be like for the supers, but usually that left him dizzy or grumpy, and he was still too fascinated by the book. “I’m a dancer.” He paused long enough to glance up at the doctor for a minute then returned his attention to the book. “I trained basically my whole life. Until I was brought here.”
When he brought her the cup she took a long drink before setting it down on the stand beside the tub. Then she smiled over at Andrew, nodding. “I am. There’s nothing quite like a warm bubble bath.” Grinning mischievously, she flicked a few bubbles in his direction.
He hadn’t stepped back very far so the bubbles landed on him and he rolled his eyes, folding his arms over his chest. “Yeah, you’ve said that before. I think every time you decide to take a bath.” After a minute of consideration, he pulled his shirt off and tossed it aside then sat cross-legged on the floor.
“i am a much better reader than binder.” anthos joked. “i did enjoy leather working, though.”
“I never even thought about it. Not sure that there were many bookbinders back in the . . . other part of the world. Or they would be specialty shops if they were. Leather working could be cool though. Did you ever make anything?”
Lilith watched the boy and then gave a slow nod as he stated how he wouldn’t relax even if safer than most “Well I suppose that is your own choice with how to feel upon such things.” she nodded, studying his face seeing some sort of trauma in it, but not a caring enough person to ask.
“I guess so.” He didn’t think the supers had figured out a way to monitor feelings yet, although he figured if they could, they would do it. It was nice that she acknowledged that he could still control his feelings though. Really big of her. “Uh . . . if you don’t need me, miss, may I go now? I think I’m expected back at the suite.”
he shook his head, “i have very few skills.” he admitted, “even less since coming here.” he smiled, ruefully. “had i stayed with my family, i would have taken up a trade, leather working, or book binding, or some sort of craft.”
“None of us have much of a chance to hone our skills, I guess.” Unless it happened to fit in with what one of the masters wanted - like Andrew’s dancing. He knew he was able to do that because Kate liked it. “But leather working or book binding doesn’t sound like it would be too bad.”
Kate drew herself a bubble bath. She greatly enjoyed lounging in the tub and hoped that it would soothe her somehow raw feelings. She stripped and slid into the warm water with a sigh. Her eyes were closed when she heard Andrew approaching and at his words, she looked up and smiled softly. “Thank you. Can you bring it here?” She held out a hand, dripping water.
Andrew hesitated in the doorway for a minute but in the end, he couldn’t bring himself to cause trouble. Something in her eyes, and the whole exchange, had left him feeling off-balance with her, and it was easier just to go along with what she asked. Nodding silently, he crossed the room and handed over the cup, avoiding the water dripping onto the floor. “Enjoying yourself?”
“that is–impressive.” anthos nodded, wishing he’d had such prospects. as the third born male of the family, he had little hope, even before his ‘stunt’, of a future of anything exciting, powerful, or fun. he’d likely have been a bookbinder, or other craftsman, but–those days were gone.
“”I was good, too,” he said wistfully. It wasn’t like he couldn’t dance here, but it wasn’t the same by a long shot. “What about you? Did you have anything special like that?”
he smiled, softly, sighing, “yeah.” he mussed, thinking, “before you came here – what did you like to do?”
“I was a dancer,” he said softly, running a hand over his leg. “Professionally. It was everything I wanted and then . . . this.”
When he sat down she froze, trying to decode her thoughts and feelings. She chewed at her bottom lip for a long moment before shaking her head and standing. “No- It’s… It’s okay. Go dance or something. Really.” She gave him a tentative, shaky smile before turning and making her way towards the master bathroom.
To be completely honest, Andrew wasn’t sure what had gone wrong. It wasn’t new information for her that he didn’t think he had any real way to consent here, and he wasn’t sure why she had bolted on him. It made him mad, and he went and sulked in the courtyard outside until his anger had dissipated enough that he thought he could make amends. Hesitantly, he made his way back to her suite and grabbed the glass of lemonade as a peace offering. “You forgot this and I know you like lounging in there,” he said from the bathroom door, holding the cup in her direction.
“You may.” Daniel couldn’t help but smile at the man’s excitement. It was nearly palpable. “Somewhere in Medieval Wales. I got it from one of the healers in my home pack. I studied under him and he passed that onto me when I left for college again. He got it from a wizard that was associates with the person that wrote the book.”
Andrew was careful as he turned the pages of the book. He couldn’t read it, but it was still fascinating to hold something so old, and with such history. “That’s crazy that you have something so old.” It always boggled his mind that the supers were so old, but he was sort of used to hearing that by now.
“Then you’re very lucky for it” Lilith nodded, thinking for a moment what it could be like to have a claim, not sure how she could dedicate herself to looking after a slave, even if deep down she desired the affection that probably came from it. “I did indeed, I was an actress for a good few years in my younger days and back then you had to at least be a Triple Threat to achieve anything since everyone wanted to be an actress. So I of course, acted, danced and sang” she said with a tiny smile at the memory “Though I of course went by a different name, I had to change my name every century or so when living among the humans, to avoid suspicion” she waved off. “Well lets say for arguments sake that you are simply safer than most, yes?”
He nodded; although he wouldn’t really consider himself lucky, he knew that it was luck that he’d been claimed by someone who cared for him in any way. “Oh, okay.” It wasn’t quite the same as training in ballet for most of his life, but it was still an interesting story. And she clearly had fond memories from that time. “I never denied that. It doesn’t mean I’m going to relax or anything.” He knew of some supers - like the bastard wizard who had seemed to enjoy taking Andrew’s time - who would complain about him just to see him get punished. And it was hard to trust anyone who was part of this place.
anthos gave a laugh. a cold and bitter sound that tore from his lips. “oh, yes.” he says, voice sarcastic, “no one really cares what happens to me, so long as i’m not dead.”
Andrew rolled his eyes; he understood Anthos had it worse than the other slaves - well, probably. But all of them were in the same position: no one cared about any of them. “Yeah, as if that could ever change.”
Watching the sun rise had always been a guilty pleasure. Ever since he received his tattoo that allowed him to walk in the sun, Roman would take in the golden light whenever possible. As he sat there, his mind quieted, shutting out the world around him. But a fire burned within - a never-ending thirst that at times drove him to madness. And then a sound. Eyes fluttered open to see what or who was intruding on his solitude.
Andrew didn’t do it every day, but he enjoyed running and there was something about running just at dawn that he enjoyed. Occasionally he was even able to forget his circumstances and imagine he was still free, but that didn’t happen regularly. He had spotted the super ahead of him and hoped he could continue his run without interruption. However, as the man’s eyes opened, Andrew figured he was better off stopping, so as to avoid any accusations of disrespect. “Sorry, sir. I didn’t mean to bother you.”
