Inspired by the designer’s own experience as the son of immigrant parents, SS|17 is intended to be an exploration of maintaining identity while in new environments. Using immigration as a vessel, the idea of “being Canadian” while simultaneously being able to identify with and maintain the cultural elements familiar to Coimbra’s heritage, has been a challenge, but is illustrated in Coimbra’s most recent line. Much like the aesthetic of the Mediterranean, and Portuguese culture, the collection explores tension between minimalism and clean lines versus excessive, floral-like patterns. Coupled with the standardization and the feeling of humbled athleticism found in North American style, the tension finds layers within itself. Specifically, in the embroidered neoprene bomber jackets, denim baseball jersey and french terry sweatshirts with the use of Portuguese symbols like the rose, prevalent in traditional tapestry.

New Article up on Mexican-based Y-Not Magazine with a Q&A with Designer/Creative Director Andrew Coimbra
Canadian streetwear designer Andrew Coimbra previews his F/W2016 collection in Toronto.
The FW16 collection was recently featured by Complex Magazine
Fall/Winter 2016 collection, inspired by the oil spill off the coast of Vancouver, in 2015. The designer began thinking about the different forms of marine pollution and researching natural forms of defense for marine wildlife, in efforts of juxtaposing the two themes. This collection is a combination of his current aesthetic and bringing attention to a topic that needs to be put in the spotlight.
Oil printed fabrics, slick textures and aquatic pop-art-inspired embroidered embellishments were incorporated into several pieces in the line of contemporary sportswear with fine tailoring and on-trend prints. Photographer: Mckenzie James Grooming: Claudine Baltazar Model: Joe Moran (Lang Models)
