Scene it Saturday: Ripley (2024)

A letter from Marge to “Dickie”, which is partly about her incredulity toward Dickie’s message (it was actually Tom who had written her, as Dickie), her thoughts on whether or not Tom is queer, and how come Dickie can’t see that Tom is using him.

This is quite interesting because the series shows us that it takes one to know one by showing all of the times Tom spots a scam/fraud, and similarly, here is Marge, who in a way has been using Dickie, calling out this behavior in Tom.

She also writes to him about how everything is going, while funnily enough, we get to see through the juxtaposed visuals that Tom isn’t the only one who isn’t fully truthful - is anyone really? And why would she feel the need to lie about the dead plants, and the forgotten books buried under her manuscript, if she didn’t feel shame? So it’s no wonder she chides Dickie for seeming ashamed around Tom.

And at the letter’s close, we see Tom discard the scarf that Marge made Dickie, like a piece of trash in the street. How revelatory are these letters! And the images shown to us alongside them. 💋💋💋

Scene it Saturday - Ripley (2024)

A letter from Tom (as Dickie) to Marge. The purpose of Tom’s letter is mostly to keep his ruse going, but also to “clear his name” via his portrayal of Dickie’s POV. It also captures a small revelation about how he sees his own sexuality, “whatever he is - or isn’t - in that regard.”

The visual sequence behind his letter voiceover includes one of the most tragic scenes in the movie, when he dons the sunglasses, and gazes at the stylish movie-star-like posh people - the “in” crowd - and he sits to join them. It’s like he’s thinking, “Do I fit in yet? Yes. I finally fit in.” But not as himself.. only when he pretends to be someone else.

Of course also included is the crucial Caravaggio, and the prudent warning that’s it’s “always the light” which exposes our transgressions.

“Eternal Flame” 🔥 - All of Us Strangers themes of loneliness and the terror of not knowing how long that pain will endure. Harry came into Adam’s life just long enough (only minutes, iykyk) to give Adam all he needs to go on - hope. ❤️🌈

“Bad Romance” - Hamlet and Ophelia. Doomed from the start by their toxic families’ vibes. Is she a political commodity? Is her “virtue” under threat? Tragically, Ophelia is preyed upon by Hamlet and his mental instability and stripped of any agency by everyone in her world. Bad romance indeed.

Modeled after a reel by Uhbucky in the Heated Rivalry fandom - constantly inspired by her reels and decided to try my hand at one in her style.

“Light ‘em up!” - Moriarty x Fall Out Boy - Got all of his forms from A-Z, minus a few iterations that didn’t make the final cut.

My favorite Moriarty is Pool and Rooftop Moriarty. IRL Jim is a deeply feeling human that is clearly in pain. He’s hurting and can barely get certain words out without them catching in his throat.

But in the way Sherlock sees him - Mind Palace Moriarty - Jim is this total baddie who doesn’t have a vulnerable thought in him. A hard, one dimensional man who would whoop his ass on a cliff in the rain when the real Moriarty was like 3 layers removed from his murders and didn’t even want to wrinkle his Westwood..

Let’s everyone give Jim a hug. He needs it.

“Still Into You” - One for the OG Andrew heads - I only just found him last year! But some of us are 15+ years into this hugely massive crush.

One of my favorite Andrew things is how he shares life insights in his interviews. So I went way back to that 2010 Design for Living interview where Andrew talks about the play being about a quest to find love 🥰✨, and added stunning interview footage year by year.

Crossing my fingers that the years are accurate. I did my best looking into background info for each. Anyway, enjoy!💋

“Night on the Town” - Andrew (and his characters) out having a good time. Andrew says acting has become more about finding the characters within his own self, and one thing we know is that he loves dancing and he loves a kiss at the end of the night. 💋💋💋

Part of the All of Us Strangers (2023) Christmas scene

The most important moment of the film to me - my heart breaks open every time - is when they take the family photo with Adam smiling exaggeratedly ear to ear, and then the actual photo from the past is shown, where Adam looks empty and dead-eyed. It’s a direct representation of Adam’s healing.

Equally profound is Adam’s mother, who admits she never would have won any “mother of the year” awards, using the song lyrics of “Always on My Mind” to communicate to Adam. Adam kind of rolls his eyes to this cheesy act, but I think he gets the point. She’s trying to apologize. ❤️
