LOCATION: Moonfall Lounge & Event Hall â Winter Solstice Masquerade
Gabriel's black filigree mask felt cool against his skin as his eyes adjusted to the dim, seductive lighting of The Moonfall Lounge. The air inside was cool and carried the intoxicating blend of expensive cologne, chilled champagne, and the faint, sweet aroma of beeswax from the towering candelabras that cast a flickering, golden glow over everything. All around him, men flirted, drank, and danced the night away in their formal attire, their masks creating a gallery of beautiful, anonymous strangers. It was a sea of hidden desires, and Gabriel was an expert navigator.
He moved through the crowd with an unhurried grace, dressed in an immaculately tailored, slim-fitting burgundy suit; a dress shirt of sleek, black silk; and a matching black tie.
His gaze swept slowly over the room, cataloging every elegant detail with a connoisseur's eye. His attention, however, was soon captured by a figure standing apart from the main swirl of the party, leaning against a marble pillar overlooking the moon-drenched ocean. The man was an island of stillness in the vast sea of revelry surrounding him, and Gabriel found his path altering unconsciously, drawn to this stranger as if by some irresistible current.
Unable to ignore his curiosity any longer, he approached. He stopped beside the man, not speaking at first, simply joining him in his contemplation of the moonlit water below. After a beat, he turned his head, his voice a low, smooth timbre that was a perfect match for the room's seductive atmosphere.
"They say the Moonfall Lounge was named for the way the light hits the water," Gabriel murmured, his gaze fixed on the man's inscrutable mask. "But I think it's more fitting for the way one can fall into the mysteries held within these walls."
He paused, letting the invitation settle between them. He turned his body slightly, a clear gesture of interest. "Tell me," he continued, his voice dropping to a near whisper. "What mystery are you tonight?"
It was entertaining to see how people behaved behind anonymity. Andrew was no exception to the rule. There was something oddly liberating about the use of masks. Everyone already wore them on a daily basis, pretending to be someone they were not or concealing flaws and cracks that would ultimately deem them unworthy in the eyes of others. But tonight was different. In a vast sea of luxury, decadence and anonymity⊠people could be whatever they wanted. Whoever they wanted. More reserved or brazen. To be able to say things they normally wouldnât â or perhaps they would â under the guise of a mysterious stranger in the night. It was alluring. It was erotic. It was entertaining in so many different ways that it was hard to catalogue them all. Leaning against a pillar, Andrew adjusted his golden tie and his pristine white shirt. Most people wore dark colours. Which he completely understood. But for someone so used to blending in and pretending to follow the sheep â tonight was different. Why be like everyone else when he could turn a beacon onto himself? Not many people wore light colors. Those stood out. It invited people to approach and talk â see who the brave man was who had automatically set a hotspot on himself by wearing something others did not? Andrew didnât like being the centre of attention but⊠in a night of masks and secrets? It would defeat the point of acting like he normally did.
âIt wouldnât be a mystery if I told you.â Doing his best to conceal his British accent, he kept his gaze on the crowd despite his attention being on the man wearing a rather gorgeous burgundy suit. Whoever that person wasâŠ? They had taste. âThe whole point is see how he deals with mysteries. Will the curiosity become unbearable⊠almost like a rash â and we must see who is behind the mask? Or is the thrill of the chase and later trying to figure out who is who more enticing? I donât know about you but⊠I do like to uncover my mysteries with calm. Thereâs no rush⊠is there?â
