Woman for Others "What makes you want to wake up in the morning?" Usually when I'm late for school, I find myself asking this question in front of the mirror. For the past four years of law school, I've had a hard time waking up early. Most of my classmates are up by 5 or 6 AM. Some even wake up at 3AM, just to study for recitations, quizzes, or most likely, midterms/finals. I tried doing what the others did--set an alarm for 5 AM, sleep early, wake up, go to school, start studying... I only got to the "sleep early" part. I thought that maybe, something was missing. My heart wasn't engaged, and that's probably why I couldn't bring myself to get out of bed early. I thought that I wasn't doing enough, that I wasn't growing enough. I felt stuck and worthless. But deep inside, I already knew; my heart would only thrive the moment I bring the apostolate aspect of Ignatian Spirituality back into my life. I needed to live out my favorite Jesuit value--"person for others." Who knew that my last year in law school is the year I find the answer. San Beda Legal Aid Bureau was the answer. Rude but definitely welcome "awakenings" came in the form of duty days, LABvocacies, and LAB seminars. But the best ones always invovled hearing days. And today was no exception. Today, I woke up significantly earlier than usual. I was nervous but excited at the same time because today was - you guessed it - HEARING DAY. The level of nervousness equaled having recitations for the first time, but what made this time special is the fact that I am being of service to a person who really needs it. I was reviewing laws and facts last night, not for me, but for another human being--our client. Today made me realize that I am on the right track. Joining LAB reinforced my drive to be a lawyer. More importantly, joining LAB gave me the opportunity to be of service to our indigent brothers and sisters. But most of all, LAB gave my heart the fuel it needed to keep the passion alive and burning. How about you? What makes you want to wake up in the morning? 😉 (at San Beda Legal Aid Bureau)
