about.
andy is the middle child of three, born to a family of ranchers near a tiny town a little bit outside of oklahoma city. the acostas were family-first and very community oriented, big believers in the 'it takes a village' mentality. their house was a few miles away from downtown kingfisher, but they still seemed to have people over at all times.
andy grew up thinking there was little outside of her family's corner of the world. her parents didn't ask for much and neither did she, content with her siblings and the family's few thousand acres of land.
she and her siblings were all homeschooled until middle school, but andy probably had the easiest time of any of them with adjusting to traditional schooling. she was happy to go with the flow and always curious about people, and was a little too oblivious to pay mind to any inevitable whispers about the weirdo homeschooled kid.
she was an okay student but struggled to find a niche — she was interested in everything but never enough for anything to hold her attention for long.
her older sister was unsatisfied with small town life, went to college out of state, and made it clear to their parents that she wasn't going to be the one to take over the family business. so the onus fell on andy, who was far less hard-headed than her siblings and had at least never openly rebelled against the idea.
her parents wanted her to get a college education, so she commuted to the university of oklahoma for four years and got a degree in environmental science because she figured it was just the logical next step. it helped to have actual objectives to guide her, but she still never felt like she was actually passionate about anything, though she kept trying everything. even though she was just an hour from home, college did also help her realize that her world didn't have to be contained to those few thousands of acres.
torn between her sense of obligation toward her family and the sense that she just didn't want to be a rancher for the rest of her life, she decided to delay going home for a little while by applying to masters programs out of state. UCSD offered a paid program and a housing stipend, so she moved out to california ahead of her first year.
her parents were skeptical but helped her with the move as much as they could on the promise that it was just a detour, and she'd be back home in no time with a degree that would help her optimize the business.
she chose aurora bay because she quickly found she hated san diego and cities in general — 'you can take the girl out of the small town' and all of that — and took multiple buses down to campus for classes by day and bartended by night.
she finished her degree in a year and a half (december 2024) but was simultaneously desperate not to go back home by the end of it, kicking herself for completing a degree she actually had no desire to use, and still directionless. so she lied to her parents for the first time in her life, making up some half-assed story that the program had been modified to run for two and a half years to buy herself some more time to try to figure out what to do.
personality
+ inquisitive, enthusiastic, gentle
- passive, naive, avoidant
tidbits.
her penchant for picking up any and every hobby that even slightly interests her has made her a bit of a jack of all trades (but, importantly, also a master of none). she can play the harmonica pretty well, knows how to fix most household appliances (or at least make them hold long enough before she has to call a professional), owns an old camera that she picked up a garage sale and fixed up herself, can tell you a lot about the history of ABBA, and so on
picked up skateboarding while at UCSD after watching some undergrads skating on campus. it's how she gets anywhere now
her apartment is covered floor to ceiling with plants. her green thumb might actually be magic. she grows small quantities of weed in her window sills and gives out joints as gifts to visitors
got her first and as of now only tattoo (a kingfisher bird) right after she moved to california. it's to remind her of home, but her mother's still horrified by it
unabashed horse girl. she has an appaloosa named candace back home and her parents set up a nanny cam with a live feed in her stable that andy checks in on every day
literally didn't know sea foam was a gay bar until halfway through her interview for the bartending gig. just needed a job, saw a 'help wanted' sign in the window and somehow completely missed the pride flags all over the place
isn't out as anything, but the closet is glass with this one. she dresses like a lesbian, talks like a lesbian, is a lesbian, but she's also completely oblivious and has only sporadically paid any mind to romantic or sexual attraction. she's paid more mind since moving (esp since she literally works at a gay bar LSKJDLFKDSJL) and has acted on her attraction to women but is still having a hard time admitting she's not attracted to men
a lot of that has to do with her deeply catholic family, who have always thrown around a lot of casual homophobia that has definitely stuck with her, maybe even more than she's fully aware of. it's another big reason why she doesn't want to go home; she has no desire to be a girlkisser stuck in oklahoma
