the story so far.

scottie (born scarlett) was born as the second child to nina nolan, a stripper in orlando who could barely hold down a job for anything longer than four months.

with her mother and her older brother, atlas, scottie grew up in 'pay by the night' motel rooms. often it was just her and her brother fending for themselves while their mother worked and partied through nights and slept through the days. that's when times were good.

when times were bad nina would disappear for days at a time, either with a new boyfriend or whatever substance she was currently indulging in. those would be the times they'd get kicked out of motels for falling behind on payments.

eventually the luck ran out and child services collected scottie and her brother when she was ten years old. separated by the system, they agreed to meet up in california when they turned eighteen after scottie having an obsession with hollywood all her life.

scottie bounced through the foster care system, some places good and some places bad -- some stays long and some stays short. a bad altercation with a man in her last placement led to her breaking a bottle over his head in self-defense -- an assault charge that led her to spend her last two years in the system in a group home.

after spending their time in several cities along the coast and a span of three years in las vegas working as a stripper, she currently rents a house in fisher's cove with her brother. they haven't heard from nina since they were kids. they enjoy throwing rowdy parties and are no strangers to noise complaints.

scottie fell easily into working as a cocktail waitress -- an adaptable job that puts her natural flirtation skills and attitude to work and results in good tips and happy regulars. she runs an onlyfans account on the side with a solid base built up of fans from her stripper days.

While not one to typically complain about nature, Dorian did feel a bit peeved as he stared back at now empty soil he was just gardening in. A rooster, of all things, had managed to undo his work in a near instant and behind his back (literally).

And then the thief was gone. Which has Dorian even more flustered.

Scottie rises from her seat on her porch when she sees the man approaching, taking a gulp of her beer before she scoops her chiauha up from the ground to cradle him in her arms.

Atlas almost misses that Scottie was talking to him thanks to his efforts at actively drowning out the loud women on the TV that she was insisting on watching. Reality had never been a genre that interested him -- he encountered far stranger folk on the daily than could ever be cast.

He rests his phone on his chest as he looks at his sister, her question a strange one for her. Scottie was a thousand times more likely to tell him not not mention their mom than to bring her up in conversation.

"Last month or thereabouts, why?"

Scottie feels a twist in her stomach as her jaw briefly tenses at Atlas' answer -- a strange prickle feeling on the inside of her nose, a harbginger of the urge to cry.

She denies it and inhales sharply to remove it.

Scottie felt constantly in a state of purgatory in her relationship with her mother: she felt sick whenever the woman's name was mentioned, and yet felt hurt that she reached out to Atlas more often.

"No reason," she mumbles with a limp, one shoulder shrug.

"Just wondered. I haven't heard from her in two years and change. That's all."

Buddy might have laughed at the hypothetical that Scottie hopped to if he couldn't tell that she thought there was some possibility to it. It became significantly less funny to him to think that some part of her believed he would only ask her out as step one of some revenge scheme.

( Had it been a few months prior when his anger had still been smouldering, the potential wouldn't have been completely unfounded. )

In the absence of a true yes or an outright no, Buddy does his best to keep steady footing on a maybe that's destabilising in nature.

He wants to walk it back, save face, regain the upper hand.

More than any of those, he wants to hold her hand.

He wants to be able to kiss her again, to tell her stupid things that have happened during his stupid days and all the other sentimental shit that when he witnessed it from anyone else made his eyes roll so hard in his head they were at risk of falling out.

"I figured it wasn't, suppose I'll never get to the bottom of who that was," Buddy concedes, giving his favourite arsonist the benefit of the doubt even if there isn't a single doubt in his mind that his one and only suspect was as guilty as it got, "One of life's many mysteries."

"It's not a trick. I'm actually being very fucking sincere right now which doesn't come naturally to me. And maybe if she could go back in time she would make different choice about it. But then whenever she goes back to how she felt hearing Atlas tell her he'd seen Buddy kissing someone else on the beach, she can feel her base instincts urge to take over again. Scottie can't keep up the haughty act when Buddy says that he's sincere, her gaze falling over to his face against her better judgement.

It's so annoying that her stomach flips when the two of them make eye contact.

Sure, maybe it was eating out of the trash. But sometimes dumpster diving had it's merits.

Freddy was never like the rest of the drivers who partied after a good result. He'd go out with his team if they wanted to go out, but he liked lounges better. A quieter setting where he could drink and actually hear the person he was with.
